"So I say, as President, to all our immigrants, you are welcome here. But you must honor laws, embrace our culture, learn our language, know our history; and when the time comes, you should become citizens." - President Bill Clinton Commencement address at Portland State University, 1998. "Those who come here to start new lives in our country have a responsibility to understand what America is about and the responsibility to learn the English language so they can better understand our national character and participate fully in American life," - President George W. Bush, Cinco de Mayo ceremony, 2006. What do I win? |

The term "racist" is starting to lose any meaning with me. I think its a good idea to learn english if you are an immigrant but its your choice. |

Racists? People are out of friggin' control. I didn't know Mexican was a race, or French, or German, or Chinese. The United States has NO national language. Nobody can force anyone to speak any language in this country. HOWEVER, I think it's a pretty safe bet that you can not fully immerse yourself in the culture as a whole without knowing how to speak English. It's not racist. It's practical. Get over yourself. If I upped and decided to move to Japan not knowing a single syllable of Japanese, I would have no justifiable reason to expect to get anything done easily, no reason to expect anyone to know english, etc. |

Meh, I just might up and decide to ex-pat to Russia, you can bet there are alot of people there that speak English. Do I expect them to? No, Am I going to be upset if suddenly all signs, ATMs, public services, and business dont placate to me and my English needs? Am I going to scream whine and moan that its a racist state and conspiracy? NOPE, its not my FU*King country. Learn the language. You know the inscription on the Statue of Liberty wasnt a welcome to America... it was a Leave France ~ we dont want your tired, weak, poor huddled masses. |

I know one Japanese expression, thanks to a song I heard in the 80's. At least I'll be polite. |

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' Theodore Roosevelt 1907 |

Theodore Roosevelt, I'd vote for him, isn't he dead? Woah, that would be a turn of events, a live voter voting for a dead presidential candidate. "We the People".....used to be a good team. What do I win? Hmartin, looks like Delta one has you winning a big case of the clap! |

English is our language. Always has been, always WILL be. My grandparents learned it when they came here, and they were Greek! Different alphabet altogether. Heck my mom doesn't even know much Greek, only english. It's nice to cater to some new immigrants, but they should learn it ASAP. Oh and I'm a lefty to |

Just curious, do we have a national language? My understanding is that we don't (could be wrong). Not saying we should or shouldn't just wondering. I live in California and all the immigrants I've met either speak the language (English) or are trying to learn. No easy task for some of us to learn another language. |
