I just bought a new Toshiba laptop and want to get it and my XBOX360 on a wireless network. I'm not looking at having anything more than these two divices on the router.

I'm big into on-line game playing with the XBOX and am looking for the best, affordable ($200.00 or less) router that's available to give me lag-free gaming (and "movie" downloads).

I've looked at a couple of DLink routers on Best Buys website, but was wondering what else is out there.

Wilson, this is a G right? Isn't the latest and greatest the N+?

I'm totally clueless about this crap.

Yeah but IIRC the xbox is only G..so that won't matter...both ends have to have N to run N...otherwise it reverts to G

another thing with the xbox is u will have to have a wireless adapter wich is around 100 bucks if i remeber right. a much better route is to plug the xbox directly into the modem and just use the wireless for everything eles. i run it that way the xbox is pluged directly into modem and three laptops and wii running off the wireless. the modem will ALWAYS give priority to the wired connection.
good luck

N isn't even an official spec yet, they could come out tomorrow and just totally scrap it. N is also more expensive than G, and unless your laptop and other devices are N compatible, you are just wasting money. N routers will also do B and G backwards compatibility fine.

See?

Johnny, you wanna buy that one I have?

Like I said, it's a great router...It' sitting here in the box and I think I only ever installed DD-WRT on it then threw it back in the box!

DDWRT makes it sooo much better, like with any router that can handle it.

Do not have an Xbox, but I can speak well for this Belkin router. Looks like you can have one on your doorstep for under $25 and change.

For basic networking, skip right past the wireless-N and range extender mess. Go to your local walmart and pick up the basic Belkin router for ~$30. Sometimes they're gray like the one pictured above, but walmart has a black one with a single antenna on their website currently.

If you want to spend a little more, head to best buy and get the normal Linksys WRT-54G wireless router for $59 (sometimes they're $69). I don't know that you'll notice a functional difference, but Linksys is owned by Cisco so it should be higher quality.

The D-Link stuff works fine too. The only brand that consistently annoys me is Netgear.

*Edit- No matter what unit you buy, it's a good idea to check the manufacturer's website to verify that your device has the latest firmware. Also, don't forget to change the default password on the router.

I agree with Spike.

I had a Netgear, and it was a pain...
Then one day, I couldn't reach the internet. There was a strange high pitched (barely audible) whine coming from the router.

So, I went out and got a Linksys. It is and has been trouble free for about 2 years now. I haven't had to touch one thing on it since I set it up.

This is my first wireless post!!

I bought the Linksys and it took me less than 30 minutes to get going.

I still have the xbox and my wireless printer to configure, but I wanted to say thanks for the help!

I hope you got the one to put DD-WRT on!!

Go check it out...

www.dd-wrt.com or something..Google it.

Or you can use Tomato.

Much better and more stable than the stock firmwares.

I got the Linksys (by CISCO)WRT610N

Works simultaneously in the 2.3 and 5 Gigahertz radio bands. Both bands use Wireless-N technology. Work with wireless-G, -B, and -A devices.

Its also a 4-port Gigabit switch delivering wired speeds that are 10X faster than 10/100 connections.

Sweet...

Give it a whirl man!

I like the Buffalo because I can jack up the signal strength to greater than what it was made for with no negative side effects. So I can increase the range..=)
