Our Company photographer couldn't come in to work today - pics in the link are from his photo-hosting site and taken right from his house and neighborhood. About a third of folks here are affected. August Fire (Acton, CA) - link Pic out his back yard:

I can see the giant ominous looking mushroom cloud of that fire from my house by LAX. And there was a brushfire on the Palos Verdes peninsula at Portuguese Bend over the weekend. However, the smoky air does make for an awesome bright orange moon at night. |

Dang! Was watching the reports on the news this morning. Hope the darn wind dies, and the moisture picks up. Is there any suspicion as to source of the fires? |

They are saying that the 100000+ acre fire is unknown origin. There are at least 8 others burning and a couple are man-caused which supposedly means COULD be machinery or tools - not necessarily arson. When it's this bad, there is ALWAYS a hemmorhoid in the shape of a human who will deliberately start one... unfortunately. |

My son and daughter in law , who are leaving for China for 3 weeks on Saturday, are staring right at it . . they tell me they are safe, but they have all their important documents and valuable stuff packed and sitting in a car in the garage ready to go on a moment's notice. . .scary stuff. I tried to call Al and Penny Keaton the other day but had an old number . . I think they may be right in the thick of this. Scary part is that two idiots tried to "escape" by sitting in a hot tube. |

Heck, we figure that MOST of the LA County firefighting crew have eaten there at least one or two fires now. |

I was on a Sequoia National Forest fire fighting crew in 1974 and was stationed in Kernville (literally down the road from Ferris Bueller's Thunderdome). During that summer, we had more fires burning in our district at one time than any other place in the US. I remember cutting line, eating smoke, literally having one foot in the fire in 100+ temperature. They trucked KFC to us and WE WERE HUNGRY! Our crew chief said that we could eat as long as HE was eating. My chief literally sucked down three pieces of chicken in seconds and we were back cutting fire line pronto. Most of us were half way through our first piece of chicken. We were super hungry but no matter. The chief was god. It was time to cut line. These guys out there earn their pay big time! |

Like everything else, "news" gotten from discussion boards is ALWAYS suspect. My buddy Stew Goddard keeps one of his wheelchairs at Newcombs. He is paralyzed from the belly down and has modified his R6 with retractable outriggers so when he rides up to Newcomb's - he calls first and they meet him in the parking lot so he can drop into his wheelchair and eat. Cool dude, Stew. He talks to Newcomb's a lot so I kinda give his email a little more credibility - but NOBODY has any confirmation (yet) Pic is Stew when he was racing in the Aprilia cup

Heard on the radio that Hidden Springs is a total loss. Just the old phone booth still stands. Major Bummer - I liked those guys and stopped there whenever going by on Angeles Forest Hwy. I guess all those cool old Smokey the Bear posters are a goner. Still haven't heard anything definitive on the fate of Newcomb's Ranch. Al |

That is really sad about Hidden Springs. - no more of Jim's excellent burgers and fishing stories - no more Otis serenading us on his Banjo - or Mama herself telling us stories about her trips At least not until they rebuild. By the way, did you know the phone booth has not been hooked up for several years. Truly sad news. |

It breaks my heart. Nevertheless, thanks for letting me know, Wolf. That place was a lot more than the sum of it parts. Jim, Otis, Janis, and Mama made it a different place. I'm sure Jim will spearhead the rebuild..or at least I hope so. The place is a lot more about people than what vanished in the fire. |
