Well with all the current rumors going around, I cannot help but look into what Buell has done in the past... (please correct me if my dates are off) In 2000 they came out with the blast, which revised the "sportster" engine that was being used in the tube frame bikes. In 2003 they came out with the XB line of bikes, which used a what basically was a Blast engine with an extra cylinder grafted on, along with a revolutionary frame design. The current situation; there is a very strong possibility of Buell coming out with the dirt bike. Rumors suggest it shall have a new power plant, but other rumors include that Buell will be coming out with an XB replacement with a new engine. But if their engine trend continues, perhaps Buell will use the dirt bike as another test bed for the new engine, before continuing to finish/perfect a design for the XB replacement. Just a few thoughts that might be interesting to think about. |

interesting and logical, the Vrod mill rumor has been squenched. the power plant is the one piece of the XB that can be radicaly improved. |

Then there's the dealio about them talking about the dirt bikes, then they could just jump out with an all new bike and we would be concentrating too much about the dirt bikes and be slapped in the side of the head with a new bike. |

"In 2000 they came out with the blast, which revised the "sportster" engine that was being used in the tube frame bikes" Please explain this logic, I never saw a sportster with single cylinder engine. What are you talking about? |

what he means is the blast engine was derived from the sportster engine even though it is only one cylinder |

It revised the Sportster engine from two cylinders to one. |

Firebolt020283, has the idea... If you look at the XB engine and compare it to the blast engine they have far more in common then any of the previous engines that Buell used, which were basically modified sportster engines. The number of cylinders is really rather irrelevant, it would just double the number of certain components and would make "troubleshooting" more difficult. So as a "test bed" they put it in the blast frame and began producing it. And once they where certain that they have fixed all the bugs they would graft the second cylinder on. The likely reasons for this approach: -To test the integrity of the layout in the real world, and then apply the results to further perfecting the XB engine. Not to mention test the new high tolerances manufacturing process. -To introduce a new class of Buells, to spread their market. -Give them more time to perfect the XB frame. The blast was not intended to be some ultra high performance machine; it was intended to be something fun and not intimidating, something anyone could enjoy. If a major flaw would have been discovered, it would be simpler to do the recall with half as many components. As well as that the blast would not be the center of attention, as lets say a flagship model. While the XB, as we now know, was intended to be the flagship of the Buell line. So they had to be certain that it will not fail, they needed the extra time to make sure everything would work as intended. But really this is just an idea, that seemed interesting and somewhat plausible. I am sure Buell will come out with something great, and that all of us will want, but: The important part is to enjoy the bike you have now. Speculation about specifics may be fun but it seems as though we take it too far... |
