If you believe in global warming as presented by a current oscar winner, then you morally can not allow 3 billion chinese to have SUV's. The only way to stop them I can think of would also cause nuclear winter, ( myth ) so there is no need for carbon credits. Why does this seem like paying the local bishop for indulgences? Why does this seem like paying the local bishop for indulgences? Because that's exactly what it is. What a load... |

People need to realize that folks that don't burn hydrocarbons in their SUV's or don't even have electric lights are HUGE and INEFFICIENT users of energy in the form of calories. Calories used in plant growth and in consumption - conversion to work by draft animals or in human effort... extremely inefficient compared to a bad internal combustion engine and a more generalized power distribution system as we have today. If you look even farther back at TOTAL energy required to support a particular individual or society, the "classic" hunter-gatherer was VERY wasteful. Just think what would happen if we reverted back 200 years, burned wood and coal for heat. What if we used beasts of burden for power and performed the tasks of that day with the human energy normally wasted... not good. Not really thinking very deep - just thinking out loud. cows account for 18% of worldwide greenhouse gases. that's more than cars and industry in the US combined. so i guess the vegans are gonna blame the meat eaters like me next? |

And another thing...... The earth is continually changing, do you think we have any more than a regional effect? I suppose the experts are going to figure a way to blame polar shifts on humans, and come up with a reason to reduce the number to prevent further polar shifts from happening. But none the less I still appreciate you guys! |

That poll is very poorly set up, if not outright misleading in its numbers. for example, when needed my 'primary' transport is my work truck, but its not gas, or diesel ( dedicated propane - HUGE difference in emissions) it also asks about miles, not fuel usage - warmup times in cold climate, vehicle under load etc.... no questions about the R value of the insulation in assorted spaces, or TYPE of insulation. Asks about heat, and energy star compliance, but not fuel type ( again, propane is common here, but has different emissions to natural gas) result doesnt specify if that output is per person, or accumulated total for the household (presumably the latter?) |

Interesting that the Average house in the UK has half the emissions of the average house in the USA. I think global warming is all the cows fault. Vegans are supporting not killing cows, therefor VEGANS ARE SUPPORTING GLOBAL WARMING!!! AAHHHHHHhhhhhhhh |

Mikef - didnt spot that, what page? funny how with the emissions so much better there, none of my relatives want me to visit: they all insist on coming here for the fresh air, clean water, and blue skies?!?! |

That poll is very poorly set up, if not outright misleading in its numbers. agreed. No detailed questions like home insulation, construction type, digtal program thermostats, wrapped hot water tank, etc etc etc No questions about driving STYLE or maintance on your mod of transportation. No questions about how much food you consume or any purchases of pure wastefull items. (like a huge gun collection or high powered Buell) |

Just wait for the next big asteroid to hit this beautiful blue dot in space. It'll be like hitting the perverbial reset button, and nothing we have done, or will do will matter. That is unless of course we infect another planet with the human effect soon enough. So burp and fart all you want. Me and my son are going to. If everyone on earth farted in the same direction at the same time do you think it would change the rotation of the earth? |

For what it's worth, I did some rough calcs the other day, and estimated that, globally, we consume about 5800x5800x5800 feet of petroleum every year. Now, plunk that "cube" of petroleum next to the metropolitan skyline of your choice for the visual effect. I haven't yet fiddled with that BP site enough, but I cringed when I saw the little check mark for "green" energy. Sorry, but in my opinion, most of what people consider to be "green" energy is actually much worse for the environment than drilling for underground oil reserves in a desert, or the ocean. Rough calculations show that if all of the existing farmland in the US were to be dedicated to the production of "bio fuel", we'd only satisfy ~10% of our fuel consumption, and we'd then be buying our food from North Korea. It hurts my pea-brain when I think of all of those poor dinosaurs that spent hundreds of millions of years sacrificing themselves, and dropping into the depths of pressure and temperature, deep within the earth. It took them an awfully long time to create their versions of "bio fuel". I just don't think that we can, or should, try to slash and burn everything on the Earth's surface to fuel our power/transportation energy needs/desires. Honor a dinosaur, burn some gasoline (or petrol, if you prefer), after all, it's the original "bio fuel". Nuclear, anyone? Not as cool as a nuclear powerplant, but how's this for a hybrid... Hybrid Gas Turbine / Electric Motorcycle: Gas turbines don't have the power response of an internal combustion engine, but they do have double the efficiency, so...electric motor for urban riding, and a gas turbine for electrical generation/power on longer hauls. Now before you get too excited, the gas turbine would be geared to the bike, so no propulsion via thrust; sorry. Think of the regenerative breaking accomplished via a stoppie! But alas, if we already complain about the whine of our existing fans, and "excessive" heat on our XBs, I can only imagine the complaints that would arise from the turbine Aux Power Unit! You'd still have fuel in the frame, but now, the underslung exhaust can would be replaced by a battery! Any takers? One final note in this pointless rant... To equate "warming" with temperature, is somewhat overly simplistic. Temperature change is the "lagging" measurable in a thermodynamic energy balance; it changes long after you have upset the "zero-net" energy balance (depending on the mass of your system). ...sorry to be such a downer, but it's late, and I didn't meet my daily quota of complaining... |

I wonder how much carbon this "war" in Iraq is costing. 1hr flight time in a Harrier Jet is about 1000 gallons of fuel 3hrs flight time in a Ch53 is about 800-1200 gallons.... A fuel station in Iraq can for just one airbase can easly use up over 20,000 gallons in one day. |

1 hr flight time in my plane, the P-3, is 4-5000 pounds of fuel. I guess that means a little under 1000 gallons an hour. We sometimes fly for 10-11 hour flights, which is a little longer than a Harrier or H-53. Still, that's a lot of fuel. Sam |

Hmm... it says I produce 24 tonnes. Darn my driving requirements! However, lumping my 4 cylinder LEV engine in with all the 6 and 8 cylinder sedans doesn't seem terribly accurate. They need a few more options. Cool little app, though. Interex, you're a lying sunnuvagun unless you live in a cave and walk to work! ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on March 01, 2007) |

Hillary took a bashing in today's news as well for being less than forthcoming about the origins of some of the mountains of money she's swamped in. Interesting, and I confess to listening less and less to this stuff, that folks unable to make mega contributions to her campaign . . . simply hire her old man to speak for say . . . $500,000. He's pulled in $40,000,000 in speaking fees and the article points out that financial statements filed, when they were leaving the White House with the china and silver, showed them darn near personal bankruptcy and having never owned their own home. Political carpeting bagging opportunists perhaps? Who knows? Who cares. JB2 for President! |

Perhaps one explanation for Mr. Gores gargantuan power consumption could be that he has a very large basement with lots of sun guns, growing dope for his congressional and business buddies. I wonder what his water bill looks like. Notice please, that I said "Perhaps" and "could" Bob |

I'm at 8. We drive but a wee little car and my Buell. I've been consuming 1000 calories less a day for the past several months, though for some reason healthier foods increase my tailpipe emissions! What to do? |
