hi friends, it's been sooo long since i've posted on badweb! i still read almost daily i just have'nt had much to say these long cold winter months! i'm up here in the cold northeast bracing for a big storm!
the only thing that is as relaxing and fulfilling as riding my cyclone is making music. i've really been getting into playing the guitar so much that i decided to really upgrade my equipment so i gave my 2 acoustics to my favorite music dealer on consignment and ordered a custom garrison guitar and lo and behold they are soo custom that you can even get words put on them now, mine is going to say CYCLONE! yeee haww. i'm so excited! slowly i've been upgrading my guitars ever since i've been playing, this is a huge upgrade however, even after i sell my 2 takemine's i'm going to have to come up with big bucks but the way i figure it, it's well worth it and i should never have to buy another one again! i'm expecting delivery in a couple months, the order was placed this past monday! i almost went with the agle1 limited edition cause it's so perty but apparently they sub the work out to china for the ag series guitars and i prefer my big ticket items to be made closer to home so i started looking at the g41 and from there i saw the custom guitar shop on line and boy i could'nt help my self! it was hard not to order the best of everything but i'm not rich so i had to keep within reason, however it will be nice enough that i'm going to keep it hanging above my piano for show but this will make me play it more often too! anyway i just wanted to share my excitement with you fine folks, i'll post pics when it comes in!

Generally regarded as a really great sounding guitar.

thanks folks, i went with the rosewood b&s, binding neck and headstock, ebony board, sapele top, cut away with electronics, gold metal, and the fancy necklace rosette (btw my dad's a garrison dealer and offered to sell my 2 takemines and charge me his cost which is still a fortune to me).
i chose the garrison for the active brace system, kinda like all those nifty innovations our buells have!

Hey Tripp....... where are your 2 acoustics?? Can you get one back and sell it to a fellow BadWebber near by??

I just starting playing and have a cheap Epiphone(?sp) could use a better quality guitar. After years of playing drums I am goin deaf and needed to play something different. Plus I can take it with me when I'm traveling. That's tough to do with drums....... : )

Isn't this where Blake pops in and tells you you should have bought a Buell brand guitar for their superior handling?

HA! Just kiddin' Blake!

Buddy at work bought a James Goodall last week. . . neat guitar.

The current Epiphones and some of the guitars that have treditionally been tagged as "cheap" are really starting to produce some quality stuff.

I have to tell you that if I were in the SG or Les Paul market, it'd be tough to pass the Epiphone up.

well my Epiphone isn't so cheap but I like to have good quality instruments to play on. I have a nice set of Pearl drums with all Zildjian A Custom cymbals and Yamaha hardware. I also have a set of Roland electronic drums. So you kinda know where I'm going with this guitar thing.......

I have been looking at Martin and Ovation acoustics lately. The funny thing is I only know 3 chords and I'm already looking to upgrade.

As I'm writing this I'm thinking to my self....... Great all I need is ANOTHER expensive hobby, like I don't have enough of them already..... LOL

Ovation are lovely. I can't play, my daughter has a nice Spanish 6 string guitar built in Madrid and the sustain of the notes has to be heard to be believed. Great instruments indeed.

I'm truly amazed at what you can buy for less than $200 these days. Admittedly it'll be made in China or a similar locale, but you can by a decent playable Fender Squire Strat that looks authentic, has a solid wood body, 3 pickups and a functional vibrato. I remember when I was a kid the crap that they used to have in the Sears catalog or the local department store for a similar price. Things have improved greatly.

I bought my son (who's now 14) an Epiphone SG for Christmas 1 year ago. It has an actual solid wood body, set neck, decent pickups and hardware, a quality fret job, and nice paint. For ~$300, you can't beat it.

I just got a Custom Martin with the Aura on-board electronics as a gift and the sound is . . . well, why Martin is MARTIN.

It's been a neat experience for me, and has provided some neat ideas, being part of the Martin Owner's Club. Both Martin and Gibson have perhaps the best ownership experience you could imagine.

I also bought as a gift to one of Vickie's nephews a "Little Martin". The thing is like a 3/4 size, is "simulated" wood and guess what . . . it has killer electronics and plays/sounds fabulous.

You'd have a tough time finding any classic ballad that wasn't played on a Martin. I confess to being caught in the lust tractor beam for two more guitars at the moment.

But, it'd be cheaper to buy a new motorcycle.

I've gigged with my 312CE and it is wonderful. Had it almost 10 years. It is a keeper. Check em out. Huge value for the dollar. Sound is wonderful....different from Martin. Neck is VERY easy to play....trademark of Taylor

if you're careful, you can find some great Taylors on ebay.

My son just sold his 7 Series Taylor. Generally regarded as top-drawer stuff.

I'll tell you a secret, but you have to keep it to yourself.

I've been playing a handful of fairly nice acoustics lately and keep returning to my old (with the dent in the body from the champagne cork in the days when KANSAS was still White Clover) J-40.

The J-40 was one of the Gibson's that just never evolved to a collector item. It makes no sense to sell and each time I play it I like it more.

By the way. . . if you want to see MY DEFINITION of Customer Service. . . imagine that you had an old Gibson and wanted the factory to completely rebuild it to original.

Jot down the time you read this. . . head to the Gibson website and then jot down the time when you have all the information you need to pack, ship and track the progress of your complete rebuild.

That too cool or what?

Hehehehehe....while you are there, send them and e-mail and tell them to send me a comp KS-336.

: )

By the way . . don't miss photo #17. If you haven't seen Robert Randolph and his Family Band. . . you are in for a treat.

Oh yeah . . and Natasha Bedingfield (#14)ain't tough on the eyes either. . .

Cool. Ordering a custom guitar is the one thing I haven't done but at some point I do plan on building my own. For the most part, I've been pretty happy with what's available off the shelf and yeah, I agree about the quality of guitars for the money in recent years. Right now, my main work horses are Gibson owned Kramer LP copies. I've got a third one in black as well. I paid less than $200 for each of these brand new. The SG style guitar is also a Kramer that was less than $200.

I used to really be into the gear thing for guitars...built my own guitars, hot rodded my old tube amps, never stopped farkling with my gear. As a player, well, I was never all that great...spent to much time farkling with my gear and not enough time doing serious woodshedding, gettign the chops down.

But when I hear guys like this doing more with 4 strings than I could ever do with 6, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have made a difference. Some folks just have serious talent...and then there's folks like me...

Here are my 2 latest purchases:

I just started playing after a 20 year reprieve and haven't put the guitar down since December

A couple of the neighborhood teens asked me if I could come over and jam with them for a while....so...one of them made a quick flick of me doing my own lead in ZZ Tops "Tush"

I get a kick outta the fact that they asked this old 47 yo to jam with them

Here I is:

I actually have a similar problem Al. I've got about half a dozen ADA MP-1 preamps that I'm modding right now. I've got several amps and a variety of effects pedals, processors, etc. I really need to concentrate on my playing. I took a number of years off after college and just started playing with a band late last year. My chops are nowhere near what they used to be.

NICE rig, Gary. Love those PRS instruments. Had a Blonde Custom 22 Hardtail; it kicked a**. I played it the night my band beat Nickleback in a battle of the bands about 12 years ago. That was before they swiped the drummer from Beatnik / Country artist Corb Lund. The rest is history..........
