I do maintenance every year in the winter, as do most.
This years was quite involved as I opted to Powder Coat the PM wheels on my sled after discovering bad bearings in the wheels.
[ thanks for the info Lake Bueller ]

project list
front and rear brakes over haul except the castings and rear resivaur and hose, all lines calipers and pads, adjustable front brake lever.
new wheel bearings, brake rotor bolts, valve stems.
remove spring plate from clutch, replace plastic foot control bushings with American Sport Bike BRONZE upgrade bushings.
Race ECM
Front forks new bushings seals and oil change.
Front isolator
remove power commander.
pc tail section, and force winder
repack the silencer ( super trapp )

need to replace the flasher.

washed the bike today after 30 miles of riding, Wipe the PM's off with a rag and done! yeah thats what I'm talking about!

What did you do to your scooter for this year?

I've been picking at my bike over the past few weeks. It looks like your rig will be standing tall once the spring rolls around. Keep those tubers running strong!

My "winter project" is not really Buell-related. Some of you may remember my "summer project" ( http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/4062/223118.html?1156969792 ).
My winter project is arcade related also. I've always said I would get around to restoring one of these and now I have the chance. It'll be done within the next 10 days or so. Here's some of the pics

Cab guts before:

Cab guts after:

Jacked-up side art:

Rebuilt Joystick:

Jacked-up stick:

Stripped cab:

New side art:

I'll post pics of the finished product. That is, if anyone really cares. Did I mention its for sale?

It was called "Hard Drivin'". I have looked into this very game in the past - NOT cheap. Few grand at least.

My winter project?

Engine swap in the S2. Nothing really wrong with the old one, but I bought a much stronger one from FMJ Higgins and it's now hanging from a fresh set of isolators in my chassis.

In spite of having a good, solid overhead structure to hang the chassis from, and in spite of having the motor on a nice rolling stand, I had a hell of a time getting everything lined up single-handed so I could bolt it up. It's done, though, and I'm glad none of you were there to witness the process. Picture a middle-aged guy mud-wrestling with a pile of oily motorcycle parts on a cold concrete floor and you'll be pretty close...

All I've got left to do is hook up the wiring and oil lines, get the new Mikuni on it, put the rear brake back on, and paint the body work.

Piece o'cake!

I'm in the very middle of my winter project.

1. First-to-second gear changes have been a nightmare on my bike since day one. There has always been a loud clacking noise going into second. I always consoled myself that at least I wasn't missing the shift, but lately it seems like it happens everytime I ride, so I'm replacing the 2nd and 3rd countershaft gears (the gears with the engagement dogs for the 1st-to-2nd shift). Thank you, thank you, thank you to whoever designed the transmission to come out so easily!

2. Penske shock install - it took me 3 1/2 tries, but I was able to fabricate a mount that lets me place the reservoir right next to the shock, underneath the bike instead of on the frame. It worked out really well, better than I thought possible.

3. I got a practically new M2L seat. With the Penske, I can dial in more ride height to quicken the steering and give me a little more ground clearance, so I got the Low seat to keep my butt at about the same height above the asphalt.

4. Carb recalibration - I tried to get fancy and use a titanium Factory adjustable needle (Factory is the company name). It's adjustable for height, but I'm not sure the taper is as good as the stock needle, so a shimmed stocker is going back in. I'm starting off with a .055" shim stack, 45 pilot, 2 3/4 turns on the idle/air.

5. New Metzeler M3s on the way.

6. Rear brake pads

That's it so far. I wish my budget would let me do more.

my project has reduced the MaDuece to a series of piles of parts -- if I wasn't a glass-half-full kinda guy, I'd despair over ever having a motorcycle again ;-}

The X1 has so far gotten,Isolators(front&rear),updated front muffler mount, new oil lines, fuel filter,TPS sensor, new fork oil, front pads, new ignition switch(awaiting arrival),polished the PM wheels 6 times(while awaiting parts, boredom),new starter gasket, new rocker box gaskets, and new swingarm bearings/seals.A month ago i had the engine separated from the chassis&swingarm mount block, and am now nearing final assembly to include all fluids...

then...the 12r will get new Pirellis' and all fluids(brake/trans/engine).

then...the 996 gets all fluids,it had major maintainance last year,including clutches/basket,rockerarms(3) and shims,etc.

Motorcycle maintainance in the winter sometimes feels overwhelming when 'ya got a pile 'o parts

RT,it works much better if you have a bare frame and just slip it over the engine/swingarm assembly.I have tried it in several!!! other ways and all of them were much harder.Frame is so much lighter and easier to manuever around than a Buell engine.

Don't despair,Bomber,I have had my bikes reduced to piles of component parts countless times.Just start in the middle(engine) and work out.

Sleez, did you give any thought to my offer on those wheels? Maybe swap an Aerocharger set-up??

FMJ:

Oh, sure, NOW you tell me...

Say, do you happen to have an extra one of those bolts that hold the sideplates on the frame? You know, the flathead Allen, 3 per side, looks like about a 5/16" NF? One of mine is boogered beyond redemption.

RT,probably have tons--will look in AM.

Beachbuell--I agree with you.I don't have winter projects--just projects,at any time of year.
Right now I have an SL-70 and an SL-100 near done, just finished work on an ATC-90, and have 2 RV-90's semi apart.Had taken my Sprint apart to see about fitting turbo, but shelved that cuz mad money maybe heading elsewhere.
Not to mention a certain Bonneville Buell awaiting me.
And a friend wants to give me an RD-350/R5 project----

Just to ruffle some feathers I'll show mine.

Oh ya don't mind the rear fender it is just sitting there same as the tank. Just think 16in apes, here I come corners

By the way I do not consider this a Buell anymore, just something I always wanted to build, there will be no Buell badging on it anywhere.
