How do I completely and cleanly purge our home computer of any remnants of AOL? We had some issues logging in with our regular ISP so AOL was installed temporarily to get back online to get emails and such. Service was then discontinued and uninstall was run. This morning I was having issues with the PC again, saw something about AOL pop-up trying to log in for some automatic update function of something or other (PCillin I think), so I ran a file name search on "aol*.*" just to see what was residual and came up with 245 objects. I then fired up the disk browser and un-hid some directories and found a whole AOL directory structure, so apparently all the AOL Uninstaller does is to "hide" the persistent intruder. I've got 9 pages of file names and locations printed out, but was hoping there was some other better way to eradicate AOL from this machine before I go on an item by item search and destroy mission, and before I chuck the whole system out of the upstairs window. And for those of you who are perfectly fine with using AOL's services, I'm happy for you, but for me I want it gone from this machine. Otherwise in a few months I'm going fully wireless and portable, and then when the system gets frustrating it will be easier to launch the hardware out the nearest clear-air portal. (I'm sure there's a little AOL deamon emoticon somewhere on the web I can insert in here eventually...., I'll find it later once some automatic update gets done updating.) I thank you for any help or input, the Mrs. thanks you for helping me avoid modifying the nearest window, and I'm sure the neighbors thank you since they probably wouldn't see a flying PC as a good thing. mike j |

I'm almost to that point, have to complete a couple more deals in the side job/career to get the funds in order, then wait another 30-75 days for some technology to get introduced to our cell phone provider network, then this PC will become a game machine or something. |

Try the "add-remove programs" in your control panel. Use regedit to kill all traces of anything that says AOL. Remember to take note of what programs were tagging along with the crap like pccillin and kill those too. Finally, use firefox since I think AOL up your MSIE browser. |

AOL really takes control of the machine, constantly updating and changing things. They have an Uninstall feature in the start menu, that would be the first place because of the file shareing. |

Don't forget to export your registry before messing with it. |

Just to get aol to cancel me I had to insult the woman on the phone. It took me 45 min. of NO I DONT WANT IT ANYMORE to "you must be the dumbest bitch on the face of the planet to not understand that I dont want your service anymore!" I got a recording immediately following saying, "your service has been terminated affective immediately." I ended up buying a new cpu to get rid of the software. |

Wayyy back when I terminated my AOL account, they continued to charge my credit card every month. After the second month, I had the credit card stop all future payments. Then they got a collection agency to try to scare me into paying for several months. I finally told them "Why don't you come to my house and try to get that money from me!" He replied that not paying the charge would ruin my credit report. My response? "That's the saddest tragedy ever." |
