I'll give you my symptoms and if anybody here has ever had a heart attack please tell me if it sounds like I did. Last night I was sitting at Church. Inside my chest below my left nippy (lack of better term) to the middle of my sternum I had this strong tightness. I could breathe somewhat but it took so much out of me I had to sit forward in my chair clutching my chest. It was a pain that is hard to describe. I didn't fall on the floor clutching my chest but I don't think I could have stood up. It lasted for about 5-10 minutes, not of steady pain but intermittent tightening pain. My left armpit and arm didn't hurt and my stomach didn't hurt. I haven't had any trouble since then. When I was in High School I had PVC's (Premature Ventricular Contractions) I went off Caffeine for a while and got better. Well Friday I had one of those again so that is why I thought there was a heart attack Sunday Night. I am NOT a Hypochondriac and my Grandfather on my Mom's side had heart attacks through his adult life and died from one a quite a few years back. I don't know if it is hereditary or not. Anybody know what I should do? I was thinking nothing and seeing if it happened later on. I hate to go to a doctor and have him tell me there isn't anything wrong, I like to only go if I KNOW I am sick. I have also heard of people who gets their cartilage pulled from the rib and it is very painful, but I thought THAT would last for days so I don't think it was that, plus I work for a water department at the city and we fixed three leaks and patched the road places and I didn't hurt one bit today. Joe sounds like you had a muscle spasm. I had the same last year and I went to the Hospital and got checked out. My wife being a Heart nurse thought the same.... being a Spasm. She's at work right now and maybe she'll chime in. You can PM her and ask if you'd feel better. She goes by Naughty nurse on the BadWeb and can be found on Storm Fronts Belle City thread. |

Take an asprin, or 2 now. take one in the morning too. Denial isn't just a river in Africa. Go to a doctor & have your blood pressure checked, & tell him/her this story, If it's nothing, cool. If it IS a heart issue, the sooner they get you on the right drugs & do that voodoo that they do, the better. I figured I had some cartilage thing, ( my mom does ) I was wrong. If I'd gone in at the first sign of trouble, I'd be in FAR better shape now. I took an advil, smoked a cig. & went back to work. I was an IDIOT. Don't be one too. Maybe nothing, but when you find out it really is no big deal, you will feel better. |

I don't think I would mess around and not get it checked out. Especially if you have health insurance. My wife works in the cardiology dept. doing stress tests/EKG's. She never says names, but usually remarks about the wide range of the patients ages that come thru that dept. on any given day. You don't have to be old to have a heart attack, especially if their is a family history. |

My wife tells me the same Toona being in CCU as heart certified nurse. They see an aweful lot. Joe, Its really not something you tinker with. Go get checked out as soon as possible. My wife and no doubt would have questions regarding what happened but she'd tell you the same as we have here. What happened to me kept me buckled over and if I would try to stand straight I felt like a knife was in me. (Message edited by bads1 on February 06, 2007) |

I had a similar issue a few months back. I went and had the Heart-catheter done to check out the pumper and it was fine. I am glad I did because the worry you feel now, and I did them, is gone. My issue was either muscle or bad heart burn but either way the heart is nothing to play with. Go get checked out, you will feel better either way. The Aspirin regiment is a good idea. |

Joe, Get to the hospital emergency room now! Tomorrow is too late. This is not something to be screwing around with. You have a family. |

Yup, get it checked out. Friend of mine had what he thought was heartburn--he was doing whitewater kayak rodeo at the time, which means you're upside down under water a lot. He was 50 at the time, but in great shape (paddles all the time!) Well, one of the other kayakers there was a local doctor, and he got my friend to the local hospital and they sent him air-evac to the city. He had two procedures over the next few months where they send up a long tube through an incision in the leg (can't remember what that's called), but in the end he had to have open-heart surgery. He's fine now, and still kayaking in his late 50s... |

Get it checked out by your doctor. If it happens again before you get to your doctor, go to the emergency room. There are many things that can cause your symptoms. - Most not serious. But with your history, the heart is a strong possibility. IT IS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD NOT IGNORE! (Message edited by Old_man on February 06, 2007) |

cochise, i had what was referred to as a miled stroke some 4 years ago. i wouldn't have thought that much of it until my older brother who is 2 yrs older had a heart attack which required a stint. and a little over a yr ago we lost a very good friend, who was the same age as my wife, do mainly to a heart attack. she had just turned 46 was misdiagnosed had a heart attack while standing up and when she fell she hit her head on the desk. went into a coma and never came out of it. go see the doctor and let him be the judge of what's wrong with you. if you don't like his answer then go get a second opinion. our friend didn't and it was a great loss for the people that knew her. |

What is your BP and hows your weight? Shortness of breath? Sort of. Cold sweat? No Pain in Left a, s, jaw? Sunday Morning I told my wife it felt like somebody punched me in the jaw (right side) couldn't hardly eat a donut. NO pain in arm or shoulder. The episodes hurt worse when I talked, I can't tell you in which way what was worse. BP, fine, weight 165lbs. Height 5'10.5" Also when I was younger (22-23)I had a couple episodes on the same day playing basketball where my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest it was beating so hard |

Better safe than sorry - get to the doctor. Since you have a family history of heart disease you have to get some answers. My Dad has had multiple heart caths, but when it was M2nc it was a totally different story. I was relieved that his heart and arteries checked out to be OK. |

Amen to all that was said above. Go to the doc. The stats are for something like 50% of the people that have heart disease, the first indication they have is a fatal heart attack. |

Just because you are thin and view yourself as fit does not mean you are exempt. Family history is more important than all of that. GET CHECKED OUT. |

Heart attacks have a very wide range of symptoms, including NONE. Put down the mouse and take ONE asprin, call your primary care physician or go to the emergency room - IMMEDIATELY!!! Oz "Nobody gets in to see the Wizard. Not nobody, not no how." |

Ditto to all above. As an RN I've seen minor symptoms turn out to be an MI. It's amazing how many younger people are having heart attacks, no matter how good of shape they might be in. GO GET IT CHECKED OUT!!! |

When my step-father had a heart attack, the doctor treating him found evidence of a previous, albeit much less severe, heart attack. Apparently he had a heart attack one night, and just took two aspirin and went to bed. |

My brother-in-law was having symptoms last year, called in to his doctor on a Friday, nurse diagnosed it as possible indigestion or heartburn, said to take some aspirin or antacid and to come in on Monday if it didn't get better. He never saw Sunday, died at home in bed of a massive coronary (sp?) at less than 50 years old. I was having symptoms, went in to get it checked out, ran a bunch of tests, did a full-on stress test, final diagnosis was that my heart was fine but I was drinking way too much coffee and that I needed to loose some weight and get back into better shape. Stress and stressors. Get it checked out. Could be nothing, could be something, getting diagnosed on the web may be a good data point for a second opinion from friends whom you may or may not have met in real life, but getting checked out in person is better. Kind of like sex, always better in person than virtual, so go see your doctor in person if you haven't already. |

Dave, everyone, thanks for the answers. Don't you hate when you help someone out and they don't hardly answer back? Haven't been to the doctor yet, been busy, but after DaveS called me I had the wife call my doctor and am now waiting for them to call me back with a Cardiologist appointment. Just got the call, they have an opening for the 19th. I am optimistic that it is something OTHER than a Heart Attack, but if it wasn't, would I be able to get to see the doctor if I died from a Heart Attack?
