I am shopping around and these terms have me confused. What is in my Cyclone? Is it just a 2001 sportster evo? or is it also considered a "big twin"? I know something about the Evo changed in '99, but I dont know what. I basically want to know all the terms that can be applied to my engine. |

It is a Buell revamped XL motor.Big Twin is nomenclature for the motor in HD bikes other than the Sportsters, they all have engine and trans as separate pieces. The Buell/XL line are all "unit" construction, engine and trans in same cases. |

Agreed - You're cyclone does not have a big-twin as these are reserved for the seperate engine/trans engines that HD puts in the bigger bikes. Your engine is XL (sportster) based. |

It gets worse, some catalogs describe parts that fit the "Evo" XL but not the "Iron" XL... It remains confusing for me. I've been looking for some finned rocker box covers for my M2, and there's all kinds of nomenclature used in the various catalogs and web sites. It looks like SOME "BT" (Big Twin) parts do fit the Sportster? Very few, but still, a few... |

Evo and Iron XL refer to the heads more than anything. Iron XLs (a.k.a. Ironheads) use...you gussed it...iron cylinder heads. Evos are aluminum. Evos are named after thier big-twin brothers because they share the same basic engineering, but as far as I know, nothing internal is interchangeable. Will a BT Air Cleaner fit on an XL mill? Sure, but it's not going to bolt right on as the head spacing is different. |
