I noticed a black dime-sized leak on the driveway after my first day of riding. It's coming out of the forward end of the rear shock can. What do I do? Besides keep the oil off the rear tire. It's the stock one (Showa) but with so few miles what the hell? Thanks, Brent 200 M2 |

Brent, Your bike is over 1800 years old and the shock seals have probably hardened and failed. Bounce on the seat (while sitting on the bike), if the bikes bouncing doesn't stop immediately after you do, you need to replace the shock. Not a hard job. Stock replacement ~$600, aftermarket $750 and up. Use any of the suppliers on this board, most offer discounts - all are excellent. Replacement procedure can be found in the Knowledge Vault or email me. Welcome to BadWeb and Buelling!!! Oz "Nobody gets in to see the Wizard. Not nobody, not no how." |

I'm guessing you have a 2000 M2. There were several years that a recall was provided on shocks on the tube frame Buells. A year after I got mine replaced it started to leak, and I racked up the miles on that Buell. A very good question for the Old School Buell forum part on Badweb, if it is active. Solution: There are companies that will rebuild the shock for less. There are from time to time used shocks on the classifieds section on here and ebay (watch out for the recalled shocks though). If you happen to have a warranty still, try using that. The Knowledge Vault is a great place too. I often run various searches when looking for questions. Many times I give up and just post the question. Good luck, and welcome as well |

Mine failed at about that milage too but I had only owned it for a month or so at the time. There are two different lengths of shock. Each has its own front mount. I haunted ebay for my second replacement when the second one started to leak. (at about 60,000 miles) Mine was $70. |

Holy shite, 60K? I've only had mine two days but I also wrench on 60s model BMWs so I'm not surprised. Can I measure mine mounted (or loaded?) and get an idea for which one I need? Thanks, Brent 2000 M2 |

You can tell without measuring. The steel front mount for the long shock is straight; the mount for the short shock is boomerang shaped. My original 2000 M2 SRP 'long shock' lasted about 15,000 miles and my replacement Showa 'short shock with reservoir' lasted 15,000 miles. I bought a used Penske for $500. No way I'd spend a dime on a replacement Showa shock. You better check the primary tensioner shoe if it hasen't been replaced with the beefier one. |

Good advice... Also your drive belt needs to be "scary loose" (about 1 1/2" of play) - the SM procedure makes it too tight. Oz "Nobody gets in to see the Wizard. Not nobody, not no how." |

No way I'd spend a dime on a replacement Showa shock I believe that Showa is the Japanese word for sh*t. I was on my 5th Showa shock on my 2000 M2 when I sold it; and that one started leaking a week later. The friend who bought the bike just went out and bought a Works Performance shock, and now he's happy. |

Mine measures 16.5 from bolt to bolt on the bike. Will this differ much when unloaded? By the way, without anything compare it to, I'd say my shock support is mostly straight. Thanks ya'll, Brent |
