My Buell has been registered on the road since 05. I got a letter today from the NYS DMV stating that records show my title is wrong and they have put a "stop" on it, keeping it from being reregistered or sold. They want me to immediately send in my title as proof of ownership. Am I the only one who got one of these? Only thing I can think of is that is regged as an HA/DA and maybe all of that is being changed to Buell soon? and no, its not stolen, its from Woodstock Harley Davidson. arg. |

Nope. But back when I traded in my M2 Cyclone for the XB12Ss, the DMV transposed a digit on my license plate that I didn't notice until it became time to renew my registrations. I tried to use the web page, but it kept telling me I had TWO Buells, and they didn't know anything about my BMW. Spent the whole day tracking down all of the paperwork to fax to Albany to prove it was THEIR F-U. FINALLY got it all straightened out. What a pain! |

Jed. Dont send them anything. Go down there and see WTF is going on. That way you dont get the "We never got your paperwork crap" I dont know if you are up for it but the Goshen office is the best one in the area to work with(might be worth the half hr ride). Arg..... I'm a Pirate now and I like Yellow |

DMV's suck. My brother went to title his X1 in Virginia. It went something like this. DMV: You bike is not showing up in the computer. Bro: what? DMV: The is no such thing as a Buelly Bro:A Buelly? its a Buell. DMV: Yeah. its not in here. Bro: Let me speak to your manager. DMV: OOOOH-KAY i'll be right back Supervisior: Who made you bike? Bro: Buell Supervisior: Let see we have Buelly here under model, kinda of bike is it? Honda? Kawasaki? Suzuki? Bro: It is made by Buell, They are owed by Harley but its not a Harley. The model should be X1. Not Buelly. Supervisior: Ok I got it fixed. Sorry bout that. Turns out you can search the database by make or model the guy searched Buelly and it returned a valid model but not a valid make? WTF? |

I'm with Hammer - don't send anything, go in person. This way you can go as far as necessary to have this resolved. Keep track of everyone's name that you talk to and document everything! Best of luck! |

I'd have no problem going there. I usually get better service when I go in my work clothes though. Goshen Office is the ticket though as they are the main "HUB" here in the Hudson Valley. When you go bring everything you have, ie. current registration, insurance, title and if you still have the sales paperwork bring that too. Give them no reason to request more paperwork (although the current reg and title should do fine) By the way have you checked the vin on the title with the one on the frame? If they dont match then you know whats up before you go. |

California thinks mine is a Harley XB9SX. They won't change it either, because the bank is the legal owner and only the bank can change it. --Sean |

Jed, Just took a look at my title. Ny title should read from left to right(for you Hebrews) Vin Number, year, Make (mine says Buell, think thats the problem) model code (N/A) body (mcy) document number. Seeing yours says HA/DA it makes your title and reg. invalid. Take title and reg to DMV. You will need to fill out the green form and go from there. Dont let them give you the usual BS about motorcycle reg is in April you can renew anytime. If any problems give me a shout and I can see what I can do. |

I handed the Arizona DMV my Massachusetts title when I moved here, and they gave me a hard time because MA calls it a Harley. "It doesn't say Harley anywhere on this motorcycle!" was their position. They also couldn't find Buell in their database. The VIN matched, everything was in order, but they wouldn't pass it until I pointed out the primary cover, engraved "Harley Davidson Motor Company". Apparently a bolt-on satisfied their requirements. Maybe I should have registered it as a Crossroads! |

My M2 has either a Z miswritten as a 2 or a 2 miswritten as a Z (can't remember which) from when it was new (before I bought it). DMV could not find the make based on the VIN, but did the title anyway. This was the third state a 2 year old M2 had touched, so I was happy I didn't have to sort it out. Traded it in just the way I got it, with the VIN I was given and that the DMV registered... Hate to think of the paperwork that will have to be unsnarled if it ever goes to a fussy DMV. |

I still laugh . . . I went through something similar in 1989 when the number of Buells in the world was less than the number of folks in this thread. Supervisor: "there is no such thing, it has to be either a Bricklin or a Buick" Eventually we worked it out but it was a dandy. . . |

Almost as bad as the SC DMV when my Dad tried to register a Four Wheel Drive (builder of industrial trucks) for his employer. DMV employee: "What kind of truck is it?" Dad: "It's a Four Wheel Drive." DMV employee: "No, no. Who makes it?" Dad: "Four Wheel Drive" etc, etc. Dad finally did convince the guy to look it up and confirm there was a manufacturer called "Four Wheel Drive". |

I can only give you one good piece of advice when dealing with these sort of people, (yes we get the same sort of problems here in France) leave anything that might be considered a weapon at home & keep your hands in your pockets as much as possible to avoid smacking the smug ignorant gits. I no longer have a problem with vehicle reg's I have a HD chop riding friend who works in the local place, I ring him up, meet him in one of our favourite bars, he takes all the papers away & does it for me. |

I went to register a 27 indian scout. DMV. What is the VIN? Me.In those days VIN was not invented. DMV.How many miles on the speedo? Me. In those days speedo's were optional. Went to the police station filled out application for a defacto VIN. Went back to DMV with number and still was asked about the mileage. Seems that every box on the registraion form has to have something in it or it does not compute.I also was supposed to stamp the long vin into the frame which I never did. |

The title for my XB9R in Washington, DC says HD XB94. I told her it was wrong, but she said it didn't matter and ignored anything else I had to say. As I was leaving after four hours of the classic DMV run-around, I notice there was one of those machines with a blood pressure cuff near the door. Are they making fun of us? |

This is a little off topic but still a funny story.(one of those Darwin moments) The last time I was pulled over was by the Wisconsin State Patrol - an agency I was currently in the hiring process for- and upon his second approach (where they hand you your license back) we got talking about one of the first times he had ever pulled someone over on a Buell. I believe the rider was a guy and the officer asked him what kind of bike it was. The rider told him it was a Buell. The officer said thats what he thought but its not registering in his computer system. At that moment the rider became extremely irritated and began yelling at the officer about how it better be in the system and how its an American bike owned by Harley Davidson and blah blah blah. To make a long story short, the guy was only going to get a written warning, but then earned himself a disorderly conduct and i think the officer said he almost wrote him up for threatening an officer. To me...thats just one of those moments where you just shut your mouth lol... |

I still haven't had the time to take care of this yet. But, I did notice something I didn't notice before. return address on the letter: DFI-Auto Theft Unit. fun. (I am 150% sure its not stolen) maybe my bike stole someone's auto? |
