I will soon have a sizeable amount of cash. There are two motorcycle related things I've been wanting to do for some time. One is building a supermoto streetbike. The other is spending a few G's to finish my S1 (more engine and chassis mods,as well as some track gear). Should I buy a used Suzuki DR650SE and eventually supermoto it (don't have the $$ now)...leaving the Buell as a track only bike, or finally finish the S1 project as I originally envisioned it to be (and keep using it for street and trackdays)? |

Couldn't you pick up a KTM Duke I or II and mod it to your liking? - They kinda' did the supermoto thing for ya' - you could upgrade components and paint. AND finish the S1? |

What's wrong with the zuki 400sm? Street Legal Sumo out of the box. $6k MSRP (Message edited by barker on January 27, 2007) |

I agree with Barker. Believe me, if I get the money, I will be buying on of these for myself... Probably one of the most fun motorcycles I have EVER ridden... Chase |

If I had some money to blow, and lusted for a supermoto I would go with the SXV 5.5 vtwin 70 rwhp! light cool hidden pipes wicked fun You are looking at about 9k out the door. I want one so bad, but the zuki has a lot lower cost of ownership and lower sticker price and better availability on bikes and parts. (Message edited by barker on January 27, 2007) |

I have one of the DRZ400SM and with a few mods it is a good little bike out of the box. I was lucky enough to ride a buddy's SVX 5.5...the power was much higher and for the money that bike is much more powerful. However I can tell the maintenance of the SVX is much higher. I have nearly 9000 miles on my DRZ with no problems...and I ride it hard. Putting about $500 into the DRZ in carb work (well actually it was replaced with another) and opening up the airbox really woke up the bike. Going beyond that would cut into the reliability but the DRZ has a good reputation for reliability to begin with. I have timed myself in tight twisty stuff and I can actually go quicker on the DRZ than on my XB9R in most cases... |

I wish I had your problems... Finish the S1 first, then see what you've got left for the other bike. Start saving whatever you're short. If you get the supermoto first: admit it, you won't want to leave it alone. You'll start modding and tweaking it and it will never "be finished." Then you'll have two "project" bikes. I'd rather have one bike complete and one project bike then have two project bikes. Just my 2 cents. Good luck, have fun either way. |

Rick, You'd probably be dissappointed with the torque of the 650 over the 400sm. I replaced my XR400 with the 650 looking for a street legal bike. The 650 is nice and will do 100mph but it is lethargic compared to the DR400 and even the XR400. |

I've researched it for a long time. I LOVE the Aprilia SXV550...but the maintenance on that (like most similar competition only 4-strokes) is ridiculous. I like the DR650 for the same reason I bought a Buell; tough, simple, a bit slow, a bit heavy, but has great potential. That and it fits my short-legged ass . I think Mike hit it on the head. I'm going to finish the S1...after this my only concerns will be regular maintenance (hopefully). Back in 2001 I put together a two page list of mods...this year I will finally be done. I'll buy the DR when I finally get me car sold. |

As far as motards go, I think a street legal Honda CRF 450 would be sweet. http://www.h3ostore.com/moto/usato_moto/crf450_big .jpg |

As much as I love my S1...it'll be taken off the road if Buell comes out with a decent air-cooled Supermoto or dual sport. CRF's are expensive and a lot of hassle. |
