I am planning a trip with some friends to SC early March.. A couple of my friends are planning on staying near Columbia (lexington) and I was kinda leaning towards staying at Myrtle Beach.... The comment was made that there is actually better/ more scenic riding near Lexington as there is a lot of traffic in and around Myrtle Beach.... Opinions from people who have been there, done that??? | ||

It's been well over 10 yrs now but from what I remember, your friends are correct. Less traffic and a lot more scenic area | ||

Chev, I've been to Myrtle twice in the past two years (once for the rally and once on a "normal" weekend). Both times the traffic was pretty intense and at night it gets even more packed, unless you are into putting down the main beach road at 5 mph... There's plenty of fun stuff going on in that town but it's not really about the riding IMHO... | ||

CS, Depending on how far you want to ride Myrtle Beach might be OK. Riding IN Myrtle Beach pretty well sucks- lots of tourists, bumper-to-bumper traffic, and no curves. If you head south about 50 miles, below Georgetown (first major city south of MB on highway 17), more-or-less west of the little town of McCellanville is Francis Marion National Forest. It is criss-crossed by miles and miles of paved backroads (with a few curves), and if you don't mine doing doing gravel & dirt there are plenty of those roads too. It's pretty nice riding- almost no traffic, thousands of acres of pine woods, and a few sights to see. I took my Uly up there last weekend. There are some decent back roads around Lexington, but I don't know enough about the area to tell you which ones. BadWebber Truk lives in the area; PM him and he'll probably give you some suggestions. If you head east towards Camden (about 30 miles on I-20), exit on 601 north and follow it to highway 97, that's a nice road; mainly sweepers and nice scenery. It goes up to Great Falls, SC. From there you can go west to I-77 and back down to Columbia and Lexington or you can take other backroads to get back. If you're looking for twisties, by far the best riding in the state is in the northwestern corner around Greenville, Clemson, etc. North of Greenville highway 276 up to Caesar's Head is a GREAT road if traffic isn't heavy (which it shouldn't be in March). There's a great overlook at Caesar's Head. You can follow it up to Brevard, NC, then take 64 west and 178 back down to SC (EXCELLENT road). Highway 11, part of the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, crosses both 276 and 11 and is a decent road but is more suited to cruising. It goes up to Highlands, NC which is pretty much a retirement community for rich folks. There are other good roads in that section of the state too.
