The GF doesn't like the Passenger accomodations on the XB9S so I just bought a 94 Magna for some 2 up riding. ...anyway the Magna is in great shape, but the front suspension is REALLY soft. I suspect that the forks have never had any maintenance. I am thinking that the fork springs might be shot. I want to install some stiffer Progressive Springs, but have never taken forks apart before...is this a DIY job, or is it better to let a mechanic handle it? |

Depends on your skills, usually it's an easy job but I am not sure about that particular bke. Why not try a heavier oil first? |

For my Race Tech springs in my M2, you had to cut a spacer with the material provided. I just had the shop do it. They said it was a 4 hour job along with changing the oil and replacing the seals. They only charged me for 3 at my discounted rate. |

Some fork springs come from the factory "shot" or very nearly. On my old Yamaha XV920R, I didn't take the forks apart at all, or even off the bike. Just remove caps, drain oil, replace springs (topped with the plastic spacers hacksawed to length indicated), add oil, replace caps. It was less than an hour. Made a huge improvement too, probably the best improvement I did to that bike. So it depends on the exact forks, and whether you have an separate oil drain plug. Don't know about Magna specifically, sorry. |
