Corrected: Buell To Speak At Larz Anderson Auto Museum In Massachusetts January 19

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE - Friday, Jan. 19, 2007

If you haven't heard Erik speak, you are in for a treat. I've never known him to swear like a sailor, but I think you'll find him as interesting and genuine as the day he moved to Wisconsin.

What will strike you most is THIS GUY LOVES WHAT HE'S DOING.

I'll share a quick one with you about just how frickin' ostentatious Erik is. . . . after the Iron Butt, back in the mid 90', I took German rider Martin Hilderbrandt (2nd in his first try at the Iron Butt and finished quite well in the next one riding a 167cc Zundapp he put a new cylinder on every night when he stopped) by the Buell factory to meet Erik.

We stumbled upon Erik while we were walking about, stepped in his office, with no name on the door, and sat an talked for 30 minutes.

Later we get in the car and I ask Martin . . "is there anything else you'd like to have done at Buell?".

He answers "I wish I could have met Erik".

I said . . "That WAS Erik".

Martin: "that guy in the jeans and the sneakers with the hole in them?"

Me: "none other".

Martin thought he was just talking to one of the engineers. Erik can talk motorcycling for hours and never once give a clue how he's impacted the business. Given his choice, he'd be on a bike riding.

Heck. . I may come up and listen to him. . . I have a few questions I wanna ask!

: )

Wow, Court. That's a cool story. A friend of mine gave me a copy of Ron Ayres' book "Against the Wind" for Christmas (which I've already read). Martin's exploits in his first Iron Butt Rally are covered pretty thoroughly in the book.

Martin is really something.

Back in the days of the "Second Buell website" (I'd label Badweb as the 3rd), Martin and I were active participants.

Actually, it wasn't really a Buell website, it just morphed into one when the news of Buell came out in 1995.

A bunch of us pretty much conned Martin into competing and eventually he took the bait.

Phil and Janet decided to hold a party for him in the North burbs of Chicago and we all came from near and far.

Unfortunately, my Buell was on an airplane being returned to Topeka, KS. So it was snagged from cargo at the ramp, loaded in a 22' van and the driver started heading across MO where I met up with him. We met in a parking lot and I put the S-2 on a trailer and headed to the party.

At one point, over the next couple days, we took Martin for a tour of Chicago. There he was, with a full DESKTOP computer mounted on the wing and a monitor secured in the fairing, riding through the worst areas of Chicago with "Louie, Louie" playing on the outboard speakers of his tour-pack.

Martin is not ony a GREAT rider, but a fun guy and a crack engineer. I still keep in touch with that bunch, but not as closely as I should and would like to.

The fun part is when they decided to have an event so folks could meet me after some of my exploits. . . well, things came up and I couldn't make it. To this day, I get teased about missing the event for 4 consecutive years. One year Graeme Ware (who started R.O.B.E. <<riders>> and I did a video which was played at the rally. . . . I still have it and it's a hoot. What great memories.

I had Martin in the car one day, on the way to the Buell factory (when it was TINY) and we stopped in a Kwik-Shop by Waterford. . . that was the first, of many times, that Europeans have chewed my ass out about American coffee.

: )

Making the transfer . . .
yep, I got pictures of EVERYTHING for the last 20 years

Can you guys recommend any good, inexpensive seafood joints around Conn., RI or MA?

I've enjoyed several trips to Newick's Seafood in NH and Maine but they are too far for this Boston trip. I'm looking to head over to Martha's Vineyard on Saturday as well. Any suggestions for sights? Will be staying in Groton, CT on Sat as well.

Thanks

no VIPs here. We'll see if the wife likes listening to Erik.

"Think he'll be signing bikes?"

When he signed mine, he had three different paint pencils in his pocket so he could pick a color that would really stand out. I don't think the guy has ever refused to sign a bike with his name on it. When I asked him to sign mine, he spent the next 1/2 hour talking to me, too. Great guy and a great conversationalist.

Court, I plan to arrive at the Museum at 5:00. It will be good to see you again. I've been looking forward to this since I first heard that Erik was going to do the lecture.

When you see Court, would you please ask him to get in touch with me? I'm trying to exhaust all options before camping out at his front door.

Freaking great time!!!
Erik is a brilliant and entertaining guy; easy to talk to. Eager to answer any question and pretty funny with some of the answers.
(his explaining how he was reluctant to tell his wife about all the money he spent hopping-up his XB9R was great!)
Great to meet some more Bad Weather Bikers (I'm checking out NEBO after this) and to finally shake Court's hand.
I was lucky enough to have Erik Buell sign my S-1's flyscreen and to chat for just a bit. Freakin' great guy; a true motorcyclist.
