Harley's 2006 numbers are out:

Buell shipped 12,460 bikes in 2006 - up about 12% from last year's record 11,166.

Revenue topped 100 million for the first time ever at 102 million up about 10% from last year's record 93 million.

Great news. It is a good thing that all them foreigners are buying them. They sure aren't selling them around here, according to my two dealerships in Lexington and Louisville, KY. It is a rare day to se another Buell on the roads of KY...but keep in mind that this is a very RED state where folks just don't appreciate a great American motorcycle.

They don't sell around you Jimi because the dealers do not know how to sell them.
There is no region or line on the map that says "No Buell sales around here"
That old cop out is total BS, and I can prove it(heh heh, sounding like Court now)
If the dealers in your area WANT to sell Buells they have to get on the stick and do it. Or, hire someone that can.
It is that simple.

Daves absolutely right. You should here what the before and after numbers of Buell sales were for his dealership when he got there. Pretty impressive.

Edit: I just had a conversation with our top HD sales person here, and he basicly said that "I don't care about what the competition (import) bikes offer because eventually everyone will want a Harley". I have never heard more arrogant and ignorant crap in my life. With that attitude, no wonder Buell sales here have been poor. This guy has been here for too long, and seems to only know how to sell to people that already sold themselves.

Looking at my numbers locally, last year Buells were 7% of my business. But way more effort put into the Buell events and time invested on my part for the Buells than the H-D's. Maybe because I ride one ;) Snow is gone, weekly bike rides start again. I hope the fat road hog doesn't see his shadow and we have an early spring.

I sold 65 Buells
I sold 76 HDs and other brands

Now, that's just me not the whole store.
Does that make me a 46%er?

I live in West Virginia and bought my Buell at H-D of West Virginia (Charelston). There other store is H-D of New River Gorge. The second store is located on US 60 between Hawks Nest and New River Gorge. I've thought about stopping in but I'm just having to much fun as I go by. This road is amazing. The whole damn state looks like a super moto track run amuck. If these guys aren't selling lots of Buells it because they just are not trying. They sure are not trying to sell any Buell gear 'cause they don't have any in stock.

I'd like to see what the profit margin is spent on.

I wish I had 65 Buells in our fleet! I got 17 of them on the road last year, 14 on the road the year before and this year 2007, I will have no more than 25 available. Now maybe if we had an official track in our neck of the woods, I could get some more allocation. : D

And Daves located where? And where do the folks live that Daves is selling to? It is common knowledge that Buells sell in the blue states, not the red...just look at the historic sales figures. Back when there was a Battle 2Win magazine, Reg used to publish the top selling Buell states every year and it looked just like the Presidential election map...it was blue in the coastal states along the eastern seaboard, then along the north Canada border, and then the western pacific states. Buells are more attractive to enlightened progressive folks who are tolerant of change...that is why they sell so well in the Euro. 'Diffenent in every sense' is not something that Bubba walks around saying very much...he doesn't even know what it means.

Sure, the dealerships have something to do with it, but it is also the mindset of folks who live in those red state regions. That is why they also vote Republican in those states...it is in their mindset. KY went Republican by over 20 points in the last Presidential election...and they sell damned few Buells. The ones they do sell are often to the Indianapolis dealership. The Lexington store actively tries to sell Buells, and the owner has had a personal Buell ever since I have known him. They have several Buell riders who are salesmen.

Jimi, I used to sell a bunch of them in Iowa too. Doesn't matter where you are, Buells sell if sold right.

Dave is in WI and I bought my ULY from him. I live in FL. I think that tells you all you need to know about Dave. The total package he brings to the table (product knowledge, price, parts, etc.) is top notch and could/should be used as a model for other Buell dealerships. (IMO)

Jimi,

And of course only blue states are populated by "enlightened" folks- you are making some major generalizations. I know my political beliefs have absolutely no influence on my technological preferences. It may be that Reg's map could equally well be linked to geographical differences (i.e.- more Buells sold where curvy roads abound).

Buell owners as Democrats, I like that theory. Makes no sense but I like it any way. ;)
