Last month I was considering bringing my XB along with me from North Dakota to San Antonio for the winter as I go through K-9 school and I asked for input from Badweb because I wasnt sure if I was going to get enough good riding weather. Well, this weekend I got my good weather (as if the last 2 weeks havent been good enough) and I have officially fallen in Love with the Texas Hill Country. Friday Saturday and again today I hit the 470, 187 and the 337 from San Antonio to Medina, Leakey and Camp Wood over and over again. As lame as is sounds I put 1000 miles on the bike on the same three roads. It was about 75 degrees all weekend and I wasnt the only one feeling the weather. Today alone I had to come along at least 50 other bikes, 2 of them in the brush on their side, luckily both riders walked away. So thanks to those who advised me to bring the bike to Texas, its been worth every second!!

Yeah, but on the same token, you can burn a whole tank going from San Antonio, down here to Corpus(37), and not turn ONCE..until you hit Corpus

AirForce huh?

Well, trhe Dog Handler school up there at Lackland is top notch..

Me likey Texas!

I used to make a run out to Abilene to the airfield there on a regular basis. Back then, I used to carry my Yamaha XT600 in the back of my bobtail so I had a lot of fun going out there.

Yeah, Texas is a great place.

Well I'm here in Coppell for the week... but without either of my motorcycles. Just here for the week on business. I'm going to go through motorcycle withdrawal I'm sure. Guess it doesn't matter... looks like it's going to be a wet week anyway.

ND_XB,
Don't ignore 337's sisters, 335 and 336. 16 between Medina and Kerrville and 39 west of Kerrville are also great. Have you stopped at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum on 187 yet?

Prez, I'm going to have find river road, New Braunfels is right down the street!

Cowtown / Blake , I'm pretty sure I passed the Motorcycle Museum on the 187 but I was so overjoyed to be on road that I had to pay attention to( as compared to North Dakota) that I rode right by. They have food there right? I was stopped at a temp. light that they set up for construction and a guy on a BMW pulled up along side me and said he was going to eat at a museum up the road..... didnt make sense to me until you guys mention it. More good advice! Thanks!

...or is that Cushmen?

It's a great spot to stop for a burger and check out the old iron.

A friend of mine who lives in TX sent me this last summer:

Dear Diary:

May 30th: Just moved to Dallas ... Now this is a city that knows how to live!! Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! Watched the sunset from a park lying on a blanket. It was beautiful. I've finally found my home. I love it here.

June 14th: Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshipper.

June 30th: Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me. Another scorcher today, but I love it here.

July 10th: The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy though. But getting used to the heat and humidity is taking longer that I expected.

July 15th: Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body.) Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.

July 20th: I missed Morgan (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this morning. By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died and swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000 leather upholstery. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Kibbles and shits. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.

July 25th: The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.

July 30th: Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. $1,500 in damn house payments and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here?

August 4th: It's 105 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost $500 and gets the temperature down to 85, but this freaking humidity makes the house feel like it's about 95. Stupid repairman pissed in my pool. I hate this stupid city.

August 8th: If another wise ass cracks, "Hot enough for you today?", I'm going to strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work the radiator is boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!

August 9th: Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts and sat on the black leather seats in the ol' car. I thought my ass was on fire. I lost two layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass. Now my car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.

August 10th: The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do anything for 2 damn months and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it ever rain in this damn desert?? Water rationing will be next, so might as well watch $1700 worth of cactus just dry up and blow into the damn pool. Even the cactus can't live in this damn heat.

August 15th: Welcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 105 today. Forgot to crack the window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the $1500 house payment to bail me out of jail. Freaking South. What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to live here??

Ah, winter in Houston...

I was talking with a friend of mine this morning in the locker room. He was telling me that his air conditioner at home crapped out this week, and he's thinking about moving to a motel until it gets fixed!

I use the A/C through the so-called winter:
1) for the dehumidifying effect
2) 'cause it gets to 80°+ on a regular basis even in January and February.

I would like to wear a long sleeved shirt without sweating in the "winter" but that isn't likely to happen very often around here.

The gentleman that owns the museum is a transplanted Australian. They sell "meat pies". Except for some local folks eating and BSing, you'll probably be the only one there and have all the attention of the owner.

Nd,
While you are in Texas you have to go to Glen Rose ( a town) and have some BBQ.
I do not remember the name of the place the Texans took me but it is a little shack looking place on the left hand side of the road as you are coming into town from the North.
Best BBQ I have ever had!

Wonder if someone. . . surfing the web and accidently getting snagged in the badweb, ight see the above photo and mistake this for a health food site?

Naaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . .

By the way. . . . I am not speaking to Henrik who has trimmed off about 94# over the last year and looks like a lean, mean fighting machine. . . I think a little Okra could bring back the "old Henrik".

Chase, I was only in Kuwait for 2 nights (SP fly away mission) but I remember there being a Subway, a Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins and a Burger King all on base.

Dave, I googled BBQ Glen Rose and it comes up with "HAMMONDS"... that name ring a bell? I'm riding to Dallas in February and Glen rose is on the way so I think I'll try to stop by there.

I guess since everyone has some advice about Texas, I should give some advice about the last place on Earth that the I thought Air Force would send me ; North Dakota. Here it is : If you ever find yourself in North Dakota.......slap your forehead as hard as you can and leave the sometimes snowy, always windy and 5 month a year -40 degree temperature immediately. Then ask yourself why you ever came. That is all.

Ya know Daves, I never could get my knee down at Texas World Speedway 'til one day inspiration struck; I slipped a l'il pickled okra under each knee-slider and...touch-down!

'Thing, been to Cooper's and it is bar-b-que Nirvana, but if you ever want to eat some 'que that's so good, you'll immediately die and go to Heaven, try Louis Mueller's in Taylor. Maybe I'll swing by there on the way to the next Chingadero-Fest at the Ranchito!

I actually grew up in Bandera, if you leave Bandera heading to Medina there are some wicked twisties that follow the Bandera river. I miss it so much sometimes, but Florida is warm at least, just no real twisties around here and very little elevation changes. There are also some great roads From Pipe Creek to Lake Medina and Lakehills, as well as some excellent BBQ by the lake. Enjoy it while you got it.
