Be sure to stick another American flag on your Jap car, truck, or motorcycle. |

The Arizona Memorial in Honolulu was one of the most impactful sights I've ever visited having to do with any war. It really drove the importance home with me of how thankful we should be for any and all members, past and present, of the armed forces. (Message edited by irideabuell on December 07, 2006) |

The morning of December 7, 1941, The U.S. suffered the second highest ever loss to a sneak attack by an enemy that was negotiating in bad faith, and, due to an error, failed to deliver the declaration of war to us before the attack. The U.S. then suffered substantial losses, losing battle after battle in the pacific theatre, until the battle of Midway. It was not at all easy after that, either. In the following years, the loss of life was enormous. Allied prisoners were beheaded, tortured, and used for propaganda purposes. The violations of human dignity, and life were horrific. Subject peoples, enslaved by the enemy. Chemical & biological weapons were used on human beings, by our enemy. There was even attacks on the American homeland, though they were, for the most part, hushed up to keep the enemy from knowing how successful they were, and repeating them. ( on that note, I loved the movie 1941, it really captured the panic in the U.S. right after Pearl Harbor ) Bear in mind, the bulk of the Japanese people had nothing against the rest of the world, but were controlled & propagandized by a militant minority that used religion as part of the excuse to go to war. Read that steal others riches. In the end, only the utter destruction of a Army Division at Nagasaki by the atomic bomb convinced the leadership to cease hostilities. This horrific action prevented the deaths of millions, on both sides, by rendering the planned invasion of the Home Islands unneeded. ( and saved the life of my uncle Rusty, who was getting seasick in a troop transport off Okinawa at the time, a SeaBee, he would have been on the ) The world was saved from fascist domination by the blood of many brave men & women from many lands. Bless their memory, and thank the few survivors we have left. Any parallels with todays situation are a sign that he who forgets history is doomed to repeat it, & a damn shame. |

I wonder what world we would live in today if it were not for the events of Pearl Harbour. Something great came out of that lasting tragedy. Without Pearl, Hitler might have succeeded. Rocket |

Rocket, Agreed! Pearl harbor was the catalyst that woke up the sleeping giant. Hitler had previously, 6 or so months earlier in fact, decided that Operation Barbarosa was a brilliant plan -- which pretty much sealed the the fate of the average Wehrmacht units assigned in the east. Two tactical, and very shortsighted, command mistakes paved the way for justice. Great thread. |

Thanks Anthony. I was thinking about December 7th last week in anticipation. But without your reminder I would have let the day pass without remembering. Thanks for reminding me. |
