Cycle World had a cool write up on that engine and test bed. Its a cool design, those folks know what they are doing. The question is if they could produce a design that could be put out from a normal assembly line for mass production with a sufficiently low rate of defects for something like the XB platfrom. It's a cool motor. Nothing magic, but a good solid "fix a lot of problems without seeming to introduce new ones" evolution. (Edit for clarification, I am talking just about the engine, not the whole motorcycle). (Message edited by reepicheep on December 06, 2006) |

Cycle World has a nice on-line article with additional photos not included in the magazine: http://www.cycleworld.com/article.asp?section_id=3 &article_id=240 I'd really like to see what Buell could do along these lines: a clean-sheet design, air-cooled V-twin. The XBRR is a big step in that direction, but it would be interesting to see what they'd come up with if NO parts had to be common with the existing engines. |

Whodom sez: I'd really like to see what Buell could do along these lines: a clean-sheet design, air-cooled V-twin. The XBRR is a big step in that direction, but it would be interesting to see what they'd come up with if NO parts had to be common with the existing engines." That would take serious development money, which it seems that HD will not allow Buell to use. I can recall talking to Erik at a dinner in Mansfield, OH, back in 1999 when he was enthusiastically telling us about all of the exciting new stuff they were working on, like ceramic composite components. None of this stuff has ever come to fruition, as I believe he has been kept on a short $$$ leash by the MoCo. Since the XB was introduced several years ago, there really hasn't been any really new bikes...just warmed over designs using that platform. I believe that just as with the demise of the XBRR's FX racing program, the will is there but it is all about the MoCo getting up off of the money. Isn't that how you would expect them to treat a red-headed step-child? But, I could be wrong... jimidan |

"Since the XB was introduced several years ago, there really hasn't been any really new bikes...just warmed over designs using that platform." I prefer to describe it as "Goldy-Locks Manufacturing". |

S&S builds a 160 CID NHRA prostock engine that competes against the Screaming Eagle Vrods and the Suzuki's. There is no direct relationship with Buell other than the S&S powered bikes use Buell bodywork. Jeff |

The new S&S engine has some nice features, but the ( Buell isoplanar ) mounting system won't work on it, since it uses side by side connecting rods, giving an out of balance rocking couple. Not to say you can't rubber mount it, just you'd have to re-engineer the whole thing. It's also a 3 cam design. cooool. |
