Make sure your work area is free of stuff that likes to burn! My wife goes to get her nails done, I'm bored. So I go to the auto parts store and buy some misc. exhaust pipe parts to make my own Drummer/Special O.P.S. type muffler. I make sure I put a board behind my chop box so the sparks don't ruin the stickers on my beer fridge.....I'm having fun....cuting....sparks.....its all good. I put a couple of parts in the vise, turn on the welder, and have at it.....spark spark spark....weld weld weld....why is it so smokey in here.....weld weld weld....spark spark spark.....what the!! FIRE FIRE FIRE!!! Needless to say, you should make sure your work bench is free and clear of oil soaked paper towels! Just about the time I get things under control, the wife walks in, Wife-It stinks in here! Why is it so smokey? Me-I'm burnin the house down |

Similar question from my wife "why is the fire extinguisher out?" this has applied to times in the garage, and in the kitchen |

So long as I am surrounded by welding professionals, I'd like to ask a question: Is it possible to braze aluminum? Or does aluminum melt before the brass? |

You think I know what I'm doing?? I think the aluminum would melt, and I say that because I have watched a beer can in a camp fire once.....just once.... |

You would use aluminum filler rod, not a brass one. |

Wolf: I can relate! Here's Road_Thing's Basic Rule of Welding: Just 'cause it ain't glowing red don't mean it ain't still hot! Never mind how I know this... rt |

As a young buck I worked 1 winter in a shipyard welding. You catch yourself on fire everyday. It's so common that you don't even stop if you're in the middle of a good bead. Get the job done, then put out the fire...unless it's really starting to hurt. And that rag thing welding in the basement, ya gotta pay attention to that one. |

Wolf, at least it did not smoulder until you went to bed and forced you out of the house nude in 20 degree weather! And no, my place is not a Red Cross shelter! BTW, I hope Michigan enjoys the Rose Bowl! OH! |

Just got the muffler off the bike, one of the torx that hold the chin on was stripped.....big fun drilling it out without messin' up the plastic. I put the muffler in the chop box and let it have it, very interesting inside there. Now I'm looking at the 3 pipes inside that need to come out. First tool, hammer+chisel=nothing, next tool, hole saw, I put it over top of the 3 pipes, 1 at a time, cut cut cut, yeeha! the 1st good junk of crap comes out. One of my friends with his better half shows up. We look at it, beer, look at it, vise grip + hammer = a lot of swings.....out pops the rest of the crap...now its beer oclock.......and I didn't start any fires tonight, maybe tomorrow...... IO!! |

If I had a hot wrench, I would use it to do everything.....open beer, mail, frozen car doors...cook hot dogs, light camp fires, it just goes on and on and on.......just think of the fun I could have!! |

LOL. My Propane torch (with built in clicky lighter trigger thingy) gets used all the time... mainly to light cigars. The perfect wind proof lighter |

So far so good. I was in the garage at about 5 am, got the bike all back together, waited for the sun to come up and went of a ride. My Drummer/like muffler looks and sounds pretty good. I thought I might feel a little lose of bottom end tq. But she pulled the front wheel off the ground better than before. So far all the welds have held and the paint didn't bubble up and flake off...... I have a Drummer on my Uly and the one I made is just a little bit louder. I didn't use any packing, but other than that they look just about the same.....now I have 4bills that I can put toward a race ecm, the tire fund, track day or something like that..... |

CO2 fire extinguishers are a great thing. Dry Chemical extingushers make a horrendous mess that's a pain to clean up. DAMHIK Don't Ask Me How I Know A 15 lb dry chem takes about 10 seconds to discharge, and 15 lbs is a lot of powder !!! |

Yeah I hosed down the hallway with a dry chemical extinguisher between classes back in highschool once. Got a month of Saturday detention for that little stunt. It was amazing how much stuff came out of that thing in such a short amount of time. |
