I'm looking for something I can ride on our terminally damp, sh*t-strewn UK roads through what promises to be another Gawd-awful Winter. A couple of years ago I had a DR400, before that a KLR650 and before that a KLR250. I'm thinking maybe Supermoto-stylee and it has to be a blast to ride so no tired old Beemers or CX500s. Any suggestions ? |

I had a DRZ400S - essentially the same as your DR400, I'd assume. It was a blast while I had it. I'd say go for the supermoto - you might find that you like it. You might find that you'll want to keep it as a backup when you want to get your hooligan up! SMhooligan (n.) "SM" - SuperMoto; "hooligan" - An uncultured, aggressive, rude, noisy troublemaker. Example: I saw a SMhooligan wheelie down the street and flip off a yuppie riding a Harley. |

Ah - Now we're really talkin' Hooligan, eh comrade? Mount you favorite SMG on the sidecar and let your old lady tear up the grid lock all the while looking totally stylish with that retro Stalin look - Awesome! |

But you might want to go more than 40 MPH |

Hey Dave, When your XBs are all nestled in their resting places I'll be riding around town at 30mph.

I recently picked up a Dnepr MT10-36. It has an electronic ignition, deep sump oil pan and newer carbs. It also don't like anything but Straight 50w Harley Oil. Its now somewhat reliable - I don't carry tools around reliable. It has effectively became my daily rider. I was in the local Santa Claus Parade last week and had a blast. The best thing about it is the looks you get when you reach down and pop the box into reverse. |

Didn't Dave Barr use a Sportster with a Ural sidecar when he rode across Siberia in the winter? That sounds like a great combo; the Sportster for reliability, and the sidecar for stability. |

Take the sidecar off and it will get to that. I got another motor I'm thinking of building with some modern bits, clean up the ports, etc, etc and it should make 40-45hp compared to its 32. Might be good for 60 on the highway. Its a funny motor as it uses little felt rings for valve stem seals. |

Ural? Didn't the man say he didn't want a tired old Beemer? All the Ruskies know is how to reuse old casting molds. |

Here are two winter XB's that would be perfect for your winter riding
Here is another one.
Actually, they could make a very useful pair, if you put a trailer hitch on the four door model. |
