At the other end of the spectrum, I got a sandisk sansa for $50 (one gig flash drive and MP3 player with monochrome text). You are not going to impress anyone with it, and the audio quality is "fine" but not outstanding. It has a built in FM tuner, and appears to be well made. I use it as an MP3 player that can be used as a usb thumb drive in an emergency. Runs on AAA batteries. Nothing impressive, but good for the money. |

I have the iRiver H10. I like it better than the iPod I had, becuase, it has a removeable(read, REPLACEABLE) battery. I had 2, but lost one, anyway, was nice, could go16-24 hours listening to it, while riding and what not... 6 gig storage, also stores text, and pics.. I am sure it does more... The iPods and iRiver, also can do video, I have a buddy that has a couple of WHOLE MOVIES on his iPod... hmmm.. ok... Anyway... Chase |

Reepicheep said; "You are not going to impress anyone with it" Did you miss the part about this being for his pre-teen daughter? That is what pre-teen (and a hint for the future Percyco) teen life is all about! I too have been looking for these things, I guess I have it narrowed down to either a 4gig or 8 gig ipod but the Sandisk and iriver sound interesting. Great, more research. Good luck Percy, you may have better results asking a late-teen/earily twenties friend/relative to do your shopping! |

Don't forget Creative Labs. Nice product, price competitive w/ the Ipod. Nice part about most any other mp3 player (other than Ipods) is you can save the music format to mp3, wma etc or rip/burn directly to the player. The Ipods you have to download into your Itune folder (which changes the format to an itune only format) then upload to the Ipod. Just takes longer and I don't think (my personal opinion) that the music sounds as good, because of the low bitrate of info. With the other players you set the bitrate to a higher quality-but you can't get as many songs on it. There is always a trade off. I'm looking at a Creative Zen M 30gb or Zen W 30 gb for myself. In the interest of fairness, I did buy a 2gb Ipod Nano for my 11 y.o. daughter. She didn't want anything else, but an Ipod. Status/peer pressure-I dunno? from experience and still living with it , regardless of how much you research , the one that is the best is the one SHE/HE wants !!!!!! the ONE her friends have !!! researched , this is 2 yrs ago when apple's getting sued for the batteries dying that can't be replaced . bought her a creative labs 4 gb and me a bigger format 60 gb . hers works great , sounds great , but she frowns because it's not an ipod . damn she even borrows friends ipods and then sits and plays with them ;-( it's not whats best it's what's going to make her the happiest that counts . |

I've got the Sansa, small, decent, cheap, battery I can change. My cell phone shuts it off sometimes if kept in same shirt pocket. Loud enough. I recommend Sony ear buds, Shure's if you've got the excess cash. I'm using Sony noise cancelling buds ( $68 at Amazon ) on the M2. (Message edited by aesquire on November 24, 2006) |

No matter what you buy, it'll just be out of date next week. Be the eccentric dad and get her a vintage AM radio you have to put up to your ear. Talk radio, sports, and Spanish polka stations keep kids out of trouble. |

Whatever you buy, please think about spending your music dollars on the only legal site that is doing things the way they should - plain ol' vanilla mp3's (No DRM) at http://www.emusic.com/ |

Go with the ipod. I bought my son one a couple years ago, and my self one for the gym this year. But then I'm all about status No, not really... but I still like having a better ipod then he does. |

One of the benefits associated with the ipod is the access to Itunes which is a pretty large collection of music. "Generic" MP3 players do not have access to this library. An ipod can access this and still be able to play MP3's. This factor alone might sway some decisions. |

How's it going with that spyware that Apple was putting on people's computers when they used itunes, did they quit doing that? There were some things about it that didn't sound like anything I'd want to have on my computer. Jack |

Have two ipod Nano's in the family and love them! They sound fantastic! Tested out my friends Zen and sound quality wasn't even close. |

I have the 30g video ipod...I previously had the 4g and filled it. I hated being forced to select songs to put on it (due to the 4g) so I went as big an ipod as they had (at the time). No regrets. |

If the 'cool' factor is involved, get the iPod. The Ipods you have to download into your Itune folder (which changes the format to an itune only format) then upload to the Ipod. Songs bought from iTunes are in a 'Protected AAC Format". Songs imported from CD's are MP3's, but you can change the settings to other formats. ...it has a removeable(read, REPLACEABLE) battery iPod batteries can be replaced for $50 at an Apple Store, and a bunch of places online offer DIY kits. |

We have 2 Nanos, no problems. Mine is a 1GB, which I use with my Nike+ stuff to work out, my gf's is a 4GB, which she ses ALL THE TIME. No issues with either. I also have a mini 6GB for a couple years, no issues with that one either. --Sean |

My 14 year old did his own research and wants an I-river. FWIW look for solid state memory if you intend to use the mp3 player while riding. A hard drive can be damaged by the vibration of a bike. |

ONE thing to keep in mind about MP3 players is their intended use and operation. What I mean is their level of expected abuse. Keep in mind players with internal hard drives will obviously have moving parts. Moving parts in a running, riding, mobile abuse evironment will not last forever. I have been through 3 such different players, and they all had failures related to the hard drive and vibration. I now have a 8 gb Nano (thank you wife!!)that is RAM based, and as such, no moving parts, and no issues!! Works great, sounds great, easy to use while riding or jogging, just an awesome piece of gear, so far. Just wanted to put that out there. Bruce |

Too heck with apple. Get yourself a regular old MP3 player.....4 gig ones sandisk I believe was the brand could be had for less than 100 bucks this weekend. Mine is bout half the size of a pack of cigarettes. NO HARDDRIVE or Rechargable battery to fail. Just a single AAA. Last me a week at work playing 5 hours a day or so. Plus I don't like how invasive itunes it on the pc. Of course I never have followed the herd, Just because it is popular doesn't make it the best. |

Don't buy a Rio Karma. Very expensive and a piece of junk if they are still on the market. Jeff |

I agree Jeff, the Karma was crap. I took mine to Iraq (granted not the best enviornment) it crapped out. Then I wrote Rio a "sad soldier" letter and the replaced it. The second one lasted the whole year, then crapped out too. Make sure you DONT get one that is a portable hard drive, get the one like a thumbdrive. They are less susceptible to vibration. For your daughter - definitely stick with Ipod |

I bought both of my kids these last year for about $120 at the time. They trashed the headphones within 6 months but that was easily remedied. Decent sound and they're happy with them. http://www.mobibluamerica.com/dah1500.html |

There's no debate. The iPod is so vastly superior to every other player out there in terms of all-around usability that I wouln't even consider another type. The 4MB nano would probably be just right. I don't know how I lived so long without my iPod! |
