Okay, I need some of the Nuke blue powders, I know its two part..

I am also trying to get the *&^% paint code as well, of a PPG color code, SOMETHING.

I only have literally, a couple more things left to do, then my bike is finished...

I have been digging, throuhg the KV, called classic coatings, and they WILL NOT sell me to powder coat.. And of course, something about HD/Buell contracts and divulging the the color code or some such. I understand, but come on now, this bike was powder coated in 99...

And the color code, I just need for a candied clear coat(paint not powder)..

I am frustrated...

If someone can help, so I can at least get the candy paint the right color, I can play with my different powder coats, I managed to match a Bostrom Edition Ducati wheel, as they would'nt give out the color code either..

Anyway...PLEASE HELP!!!!

That's why I'm just going to paint my Blue'99 S3 black. The painter said that he probably couldn't match the tank to the rest of the bike and I really like the looks of the black body on the PM wheels.

My tank had started to bubble after 6 years and 55,000mi.

Court, thanx, but I already had that number. What I am looking to do, I dont know exactly how much I will need, or how all that works(thats why I have a painter), BUT, I need enough, to candy over my carbon tank, fender, chin spoiler, and the accents for the tank on my X1..

I also need to powder coat my new bars, and headlight brackets...

Unless, you are thinking, buy the touch-up, and have my painter figure it out from there..??

Ahhh...I hate paint, thats why I stick to powder and carbon...

Thanks, I will hopefully find out this coming week if that will work..

Sorry to say Chase but I investigated getting some parts done in Nuclear Blue a couple years ago. www.classiccoatings.com is the company that did all Buells work then. They are about an hour from the factory an hour from me. They tried very hard to help me but Nuclear blue is discontinued.

That is correct. When I talked to them this morning, they said they bought the last of it. Tomorrow, or Sunday, I will try to see if that color I mixed up, is close to Nuke Blue. It should be.

The powder coat, will only be for the bars, and for the head light brackets, SO, it doesnt need to be exact, just close enough to look right. If the color wont work, I will send my bars and brackets to them, and allow them to do it.

As far as the candy, I am trying to get the color correct, as I intend to have my painter lay the color over the carbon fiber, to have it match the frame, I had him do this with my roommates carbon fiber parts from his TL, and it looked good. The carbon fiber showed through, but, the color matches the rest of the paint perfectly.. it just looks so clean.

I just need to get this bike finished.. Then, it may be time to sell it..then again, it may not...

When I get it mostly finished, believe me, I will be posting some pics, and asking for some opinions on whether to leave the dash I made, or buy one of those small low profile ones from Dakota...

But, that is for another time...

If your painter has a mixing system there is almost no reason it couldn't be matched. Most brands of paint have the bases to make candy type colors now days. If not, there are paint companies that specialize in true candy colors. The prices can easily get out of hand though. It takes some time and effort and a good eye for color matching.

For professional color matching, color codes give you the base color to start with, then matching starts there. When you know the base mixing colors you have the foundation to "lean a color" different directions.

After you get as close as possible you move into spray-out experimenting, then on to clear coat spray-out.

An experienced painter can do this, but it usually stops at some point, as time and money allows. Most painters put in a minimal "close enough" amount of time, where their patience, profit, and/or skills run out.

A LOT of candy colors require complete refinishing because they are a three stage(solid or metallic/pearl base - translucent color - clear coat). The translucent stage is tough because you have to imitate the original painters methods and use of; paint viscosity, number of coats, application air pressure, and spray angles.

That is why most insurance companies will pay to paint an entire side of a car for a small dent.

If a paint store sells a pint of paint to you they cannot guarantee any kind of color match for the above reasons. I have spent over $300 on mix colors getting a pint of base color right, then spent six hours painting a small area on a new car with three stage pearl coat. That job worked out to cost my shop over $700 just to paint a quarter panel. The customer actually paid about $700 for the whole job, including body repairs and materials.

I am fussy about color matching and am willing to suffer the profits doing it right the first time, as it costs me the same to do it the second time, to satisfy a customer. Sometimes painting sucks! BTW...I love painting!

My painter is a talented individual.

Anyway, I was able to find a paint code for the Nuke Blue from PPG.. So in theory, I can give him that code, and he can do what needs doing? All I have to pay for is the paint... Hmm...

Hopefully I can get this thing done soon...

Thanks all...

I just had the rims on my S1W repainted after the shop dinged them up mounting tires, last summer.
They had no problem finding, AND matching the color. Of course, this was at a stealership. The rims match the frame, and the bike looked great.

I didn't see Carribean Candy blue on that list, : ( That's the color of my S2, I need to get that repainted soon.
Do you have that color on a list Court?

Art,
Your screwed. The paint was done by Sikkins. They changed the formula in 1998 to meat EPA VOC regs.
The new paint formulas do not match or cross to the old code.
I talked to the national Sikkins folks, they were unable to help me.
However, a good PPG paint shop should be able to get very close.
It will be a silver base with a semi candy top coat.

You thanks the Carribean Candy Blue is tough, try the original Parkway Blue.
I mean the real one, before it was "purple".
Erik finally idientified my S2 color at homecoming this year.
There were 3 95 S2's very close together.
A Parkway Blue, a Carribean Candy blue and mine.
All three blues were different.

Any body shop worth it's salt should have no trouble duplicating your colors. I am always carting in an old tank or side cover with a good sample for my guy to match, never had a lick of trouble. Should have seen the job he just did on my brothers Yamaha RZ-500 tank, just as factory perfect as can be right down to the stripes.

My painter had to match the powder coat Amber wheels on my XB. That was not easy to what he had said but it was done perfectly.

I managed to get a color that is close enough, that even my painter cant really tell, even with the piece I used, right next to the frame... I was just hoping to use the "Nuke Blue"....

But, I am content for now...

Though our air compressor, AND oven went out this weekend....so..nothing there till I can get a new compressor...and parts for the oven...

Oh yeah, the motor in the x1 pretty much gave up the ghost as well..so, I am gonna start tearing into that soon..though, working on my own stuff...that always takes forever...

Oh well...

time for that 1250 kit, headwork, and a set of cams....
