What would a EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens be good for?

That would be good for taking track photos when there is good light outside. Other then that, I can't remember the last time I used my telephoto lens.

I am looking for a lens to take good pictures at the track, as well as of scenery around Europe (castles ect).

Right now I have : EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-22 zoom lens. Which seems to be an alright lens for a little bit of everything.

Brine I have that lens. Perfect for track stuff and shots you really want to bring in.

You rarely need more than 200mm unless you're too far from the action and then 300mm gives you a telephoto/narrow field of view look to the images. Sure you can "see" things farther away but the images just won't look as good. The closer you can get to your subject, the better.

The 55mm is pretty darn close to the field of view of your eye and is a really good lens for general use and f/3.5 can let you shoot faster.

(personal opinions - YMMV)

Slaughter seeing that I have the same camera as brine, the lens that he has is the stock lens and is terrible for anything but close...close shots. IMO I wouldn't use it at the track unless it was just for autograph photo's.

Ok, Dana I am going to a concert (Beach Boys) tonight, so I will see how well the stock lens is for concerts...

But, what lens would you recommend for good shots of scenery (wide angle? maybe?)?

I don't fully understand the lingo yet surrounding lenses.

I would like to take some pics at some track events as well, but it will be used primarily for "sight seeing in Europe" and family shots and the such.

Recommendations?

I like the Xti so far, it is an early xmas gift from the wife.

In 35mm film format a 55mm lens is close to the field of view of humans which is ~46 degrees. A 55mm lens in digital format does not have have the same properties. Just a clarification.

Brian -- as the KING of typos (not to mention Emporer of Brainos), I realize I have absolutely NO right to comment, but your statement regarding "wife angle" has me rolling on the floor --

there IS, no doubt, a wife angle -- I am given it on a fairly regular basis ;-}

USM-will save on battery wear.

As far as track days, it depends on the track. Some tracks offer spots to set up that will allow you to use 55mm-80mm and get great shots. I went to a trackday with a buddy and had a 80mm zoom, but because of layout, out of 120 pictures taken, maybe 45 were clearly visible of who the shot was actually of. (ie-too many bikes in the picture because of distance)
Now that I have gotten a 300zoom, I can get in on nature photo's without being there at the spot. Havn't got a chance to go to the track with it yet though.

Brine,

Here is a good read on the EF and EF-S lens story. It explains the differences between the two families of lenses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EF-S_lens_mount

EF lenses can be used on the digital cameras intended to be used with EF-S lenses. But don't ever put an EF-S lens on a 35mm film camera, you'll damage the camera.

Here is another good explanation of the EF-S and EF situation.

http://kwc.org/blog/archives/2006/2006-03-06.ef_ve rsus_efs.html

The EF lenses can be used on the Digital Rebels but I don't know that the pros and cons of doing that are. If you try that lens on your camera, let me know how it seemed to work and if there were any things that did not seem to work as well.

I think some of the other guys here can fill us in on using the EF lenses on the EF-S bodies.

Jack

Thanks for the links - I'll give them a read tomorrow. If I buy a lense, I will make sure it is compatible first, most likely either a Sigma or an actual Canon Lens.

Dana - you have that 75-300 lens? Any good?
Let me know so I can buy it!!! Need it before Xmas.

Now I have to head to bed, the concert was by far the BEST one I have been to yet.

I took 497 pictures, after reviewing, around 100 of them are scrap - but it was my first time out with the camera.

Taken in my back yard with the lens you are thinking about. *edit* Nevermind, it was with my other lens.

75-300 f/4-5.6 III USM Sigma 24-70 f/2.8

I think it was at full 300mm I was at full 70mm, I'll dig up the photo data on it in a minute.
Do note though that there is a large amount of light available for this shot, as that lens needs it. It only gets sharp when stopped down a couple steps. (this applys to the 75-300)

Brine I have the I have 75-300 and let me say I can't wait till I'm at Laguna next year taking some shots of Rossi and Hayden duking it out. It's a great lens for the cash.

I know I'm asking for a lot... I'd appreciate it, if possible.

75-300 link

He does a nice job reviewing lenses and making comparisons. Read through his site, it is very informative.

I was just looking at the 55-200 lens as well. Think it has gotten better reviews than the 75-300.

Reviews for both lens says that both are cheap build quality.

Unsure whether I want the 200 or 300 at this point.

What about purchasing the 200mm and attaching an extender?

Brine to get better quality out of either of those two lens's you would have to spend triple the amount that those two would cost you. Heres a shot taken with my 300mm lens of my pooch with the 300mm. The dog was running full boar at me.

Dana posted a couple examples, but here are a few of mine, and I'm sure they were taken with the 75-300 this time.

These were actually shot on my Canon Rebel film camera before I got the 20D.

The lens is a fine lens for the money, but dont expect to be blown away by it's optical quality. As you can see with both Dana's pictures and mine, they are fine, but they don't blow you away with sharpnes or color. (sorry Dana, not trying to rag on you, that's just the way it is) and any of the zoom lenses in this price range are going to need alot of light to produce good results.

I have been generally happy with the lens, but feel that I have outgrown it, as I have a much sharper lens in my bag, and have used some nicer glass to be able to notice the differences.
But you do get a large amount of zoom for a small price. My Laguna picutes there were shot from the turn 4 bleachers.

I did not get a good feeling about the 55-200 from the review, it looks very cheap, I dont like that it only has a plastic mount ring and no manual focus ring. I think you would be better off choosing between the 75-300mm and the 100-300mm -link-.

BTW, what is your budget for this purchase? Could help narrow the search.

Willing to part with the lens then since you've outgrown it? (worth a shot)

Price range is low, as in under 300 preferably, I like the 200 range.

Dana can you get a pic of the 300 next to the kit lens for me?

Here is a shot of my 28-105, which I think is very similar in size to your kit lens. It is next to my Sigma 24-70, the same lens as the 75-300 was from a couple posts earlier for comparison.

The 28-105, the 75-300, and the 18-55 kit lens are all the same diameter - 58mm. Really the only difference is length.

Ever ordered from Adorama, or is there somewhere cheaper/better?
