Here's the deal, I'm trying to help Steve_Mackay with his sport tourer project. What we need is someone with access to a 3d scanner to do a point cloud model of the upper fairing of a firebolt. Being cheap bastards we thought we'd ask if anyone could help us out. The idea is to upsize it 20-25% to be used as a sport-tourer style fairing. Here's a link to the source thread: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=32777&post=782218#POST782218 |

Just a foolish question, but if the result is to be bigger anyway, couldn't one just "borrow" a stock fairing, tape on some foam to get to the wanted size, fiberglass over that foam, and voila an enlarged fairing. Just a thought. (ps, I obviously don't know how to spell voila or wahlah today, probably why I never got a magician's cape.) |

Or ask Slaughter to send you a splash out of his stock mold - you can slice it 4 ways and blend the contours so it looks right. I don't know that just growing it is going to look right. Whatchya think? My mold was taken off the stock fairing - the first part is in my profile. Free to a good home. |

Well Steve, what do you think? |

I'd be glad to ask if we could also scan in a cloud of points but because it would be at work, the answer most likely would be no. Asking is free though! (you have software to develop surfaces from a point cloud?) |

Steve does at work. |

I'll see if we can do a scan at work without anybody getting into trouble. I'll get back to you. |

Slaughter, ANYTHING you can do, would be greatly appreciated. Yes I do have the software to create surfaces from Point clouds. http://www.vx.com/VXDetails.cfm |

I emailed myself at work as a reminder to ask our crew. We are beta-test site for Leica and have 3 systems. I have a friend in the DC area who is a manufacturer's rep for Faro. Might be able to ship a fairing to him. Worst case is I just lay you up a fairing out of my ratty-assed plaster splash and UPS it to you to do it the "old fashioned" way. |

Thanks! I *WISH* I could afford a Faro arm |

I am a partner in an inspection company that generates inspection reports via the comparison of point clouds to CAD models. We have Metris laser cameras that are mounted to a Mitutoyo CMM. I could do the scan for you as long as you don't need it right away. Kind of busy right now. |

I have tentative permission - will have to see if we can do it as a "training" thing. Will have an idea of the schedule of it tomorrow. Might be easier to scan the mold interior than the racebike fairing (the mold's in the garage, the bike is 100 miles away) |

Cool, nice work lads. I hope some of these fairings can be offered to the public. |

THANKS Slaughter!! Bake, well, it may still be some time till I actually get to making one. But I will be certain to post my ongoing results. |

Once again it looks like Badwebbers are making things happen that looked to be very big obstacles. Thanks guys, I knew you'd come through. (again) |

It's not a HUGE obstacle. It just would have been a costly one I'm guessing. There are services out there that will scan the fairing and give me a point cloud. But being the cheap bastard I am... This will be interesting. I've never used the 'reverse engineering' functions of my cad software before. But have my local VAR willing and able to help me if I need it. The cool thing about the software I use, is I really don't have to do much modeling to change the existing shape. I can actually 'morph' it to make the portions I want to change, grow. I'm going to try this before I get REALLY in depth at re-creating the wheel. Thanks again everyone. |

I have to be in Georgia next week - Fort Worth the following week. I'll have a few days in between where we can probably get it done. I'll get back to you. Prolly means a CD in the mail - the usual. |
