4/22/05- SACRAMENTO, CA- A dangerous new scam, directed at Ebay customers, has emerged. If you think you're not vulnerable, you may want to think again. The new "second chance offer" scam works like this. A person puts a item on Ebay, it gets, say, 20 bids. It finally sells, and the buyer and seller are happy as clams. Meanwhile, this thief emails the underbidders. Maybe one, two, who knows? They claim that the winner decided he didn't want the item (which does happen from time to time). They also say that, since you are the underbidder, you are given first right to purchase it as a "second chance offer". The underbidder thinks how lucky they are, sends a check to this sleazebag, then waits for the item to be sent to them. Unbeknownst to them, this person never had any intention of sending this victim anything. His only intention is to cash their check.

A friend of mine was recently a victim of this scam and it cost him over $3000. Then, shortly after hearing about my friends unfortunate experience, American Bottle Auctions sold a Corn for the World on Ebay and the third underbidder sent me this message-- "Someone sent me a second chance offer on this item, Corn for the World . I was the 3rd highest bidder, the email they gave me is (email address)... just thought you might want to know." We've left out the true email address and we've forwarded it to Ebay. They quickly responded and said that indeed it's a problem. Here's their response in regard to the "second chance offers":

The message your bidder received is obviously fraudulent and is not a
part of eBay's second chance offer program. A real second chance offer
would have offered a "Buy It Now" link so the buyer could buy the item
directly on the eBay site and be able to see his/her User ID as the winner.

They also pointed out that we could report these rip-offs by sending a message to the company that manages their servers. In other words, if their email address is dirtbag@wherever.com, you send it to abuse@wherever.com and explain what happened. They can suspend their accounts or report them to authorities.

What about my friend who lost over three grand? He's reported it to the FBI in the town where he sent the check. He also has forwarded a copy of the check, front and back, and it has the signature of the cheat who cashed it. They are following up on it and are making motions like they're going to make a little visit to the address obtained through the bank and phone records. He's also so pissed, he's going to drive halfway across the country to confront him, or at least try.

No one can take away the fact that sometimes we fall in love with a bottle, don't get it, and may fall into the "second chance" trap. It's not legitimate and the people doing it, when they get caught, which they will be, are going to jail. It's a federal offense and just as bad as sticking a gun in someone's face and stealing their car and/or money. As for the two offenders described above, you may be hearing a knock on your door soon... and it ain't gonna be Publisher's Clearinghouse.

Subject: Re: eBay Second Chance offer Item : 190049889824I am still very interested.

I don’t have to see the bike in person. I just need to see close clear shots of the damage to the primary and oil cooler.

1. Is the primary damaged or did the shift linkage just break off?
2. I would like to see close pix of the where the shifter bolt attaches to the primary.
3. Is it stuck in gear? When I have wrecked firebolt like that they get stuck in gear.
4. Dose it crank up?
5.I would like to see more pix of the oil cooler.
6. Any thing not included that is pictured? You mentioned the front faring is on an other bike please explain.
7. Does it leak any fluids?

thanx.

We do not seem to be on the same page.
I need some clarification. I have a last chance offer for $600 not $1500.
My last bid was $600.

I don’t mind using Square Trade. I have the cash and am ready to pick it myself today. No need for shipping unless you really want to pay for that.

I want to see the bike before I buy it.

I am in Nashville, and I could be in Columbia short time to see/finish the deal/pick-up the bike. If every thing is what I am expecting I can find some internet access in Columbia and complete the deal ASAP.

For me the next step is to see the bike. What do I need to do see the bike?

Please send me address where I can see/inspect the bike and title.

Thanks,
Matt

Contact ebay directly if you have any concerns about any auction.

No one else EVER needs your name, address, and user ID in advance to do anything with ebay.

They are collecting more info to scam others with, so you'd have someone angry banging
on your door looking for who scammed them.

If they won't let you look at a major item like a bike before payment, and you are close
to them it smells like a scam.

Especially if they say something like they will pay shipping on a bike that you are
buying for $600. Shipping costs around $200 give or take.

Because it is a vehicle they are trying to commit fraud on the FBI may be interested.
Unfortunately they tend to ignore these serial scam artists if they aren't commiting
big dollar scams on every transaction. It's the big ones that make the news after all

This is not a new thing. That is why people, myself included, start an auction as private.

i emailed one guy that i had been bidding on his bike. told him that they were trying to scam off of his auction. his response was basically that i was getting scammed and he found it ammusing and that that's how it goes. what a doofus.

My g/f's father got caught up in this.

The auction had a BIN, an auction number(which he wrote down and kept), everything.

Went through al lthe channels, BUT, needless to say, he lost something like 10,600 dollars. He went to the FBI, and they said, not their problem, take it up with locals, and you know what, they arent helping either.

Funny thing is, all this, he finally got in touch with someone AT ebay, through ebay, and they said, they cant find a record of his transaction, a record of the auction, the seller, ANYTHING!

SO, other than copies of confirmations that went in his email, and such, there is no record of the transaction. As soon as I can, I will get the name/s of anything important...

APPARENTLY, they are going to try to track the issue, etc... we'll see....

They are getting really sneaky. I was checking out an auction on a Supra twin turbo,it showed 2 bids on the main list of all Supras, but when I clicked on the individual item it showed none. When I tried to click back it was like the screen blinked at me and for a split second I saw the eBay ad with bids and then the other ad with no bids. When I looked further I noticed the url address was not a real eBay ad anymore. This guy had linked a fake ad right on to the eBay one. If I had not been clicking back and forth I never would have noticed. Pretty slick and it did not want to let me go back to the eBay ad,had to hit back button several times.
I never saw one like this before.

Always hover the pointer over the link. On your computer screen below the web page and above the task bar, there are some words that will appear when you put your pointer on the link, something like http:// then the web page. If it says http://www.ebay... it is from ebay, if it lists an i.p. address, THEN www.ebay... it is a fake and you should stay away from it.

Sorry if what I said makes no sense, I am not good with computer lingo.

I am not sure, but sometimes when you hover over something the link shows up on the bottom of the screen it will say,

*DON'T SIGN IN ON IT. THIS IS A REFERENCE:*

"http://210.212.141.146:84/bulib/eBayISAPI;dllSignIn&co_partnerId=2/pUserId=&siteid=0&pageTy pe=&pa1=&i1=&bshowgif=&UsingSSL=&ru/

If you would have clicked on it (emailed link)you would come up with the actual sign-in page, but when you put in your actual username and password WHAM, they got your login, password, bank account, because the scammer can read what you typed in.
