I just got back from my 1st trip to Asia, Shanghai to be exact! I was there on business and really had a great time making new friends and experiencing this amazing city

It is very neon in Shanghai, like Las Vegas and Times Square only HUGE. Ultra modern skyscrapers, wild traffic, separate bicycle/scooter lanes, great food, exotic, beautiful woman.... Yes I loved it! All you need to do is head downtown to the TV tower and walk around with your jaw dragging the ground!

Wild! I never got to Shanghai, but I remember Hong Kong as being close to what you described. At least in the nice areas. The poor neighborhoods were as polar opposite as it gets. I have very fond memories of Tokyo too. My time in the navy (6 years) was well spent. |

Given the overwhelming precentage of US debt that China holds, I am confident that the governement there was proud to see one of their subsidiaries "representin'" |

Actually we import INTO China Tramp. The products I am involved with we manufacture in the USA and Germany. We do some manufacturing in China to compete in the LOCAL market, not for export. Can't say what the future holds as I'm not in charge, but that is the way it is today.... |

Are you sure that isn't the set of Blade Runner behind you? Did you continue to have the same unicorn dream while you were there? |

One would think that with all the money the Chinese receive from the US annually that they would raise thier standard of living for the majority in lieu of building monuments to impress. Well, that would be communist thinking, wouldn't it. |

scott- that's not what i meant by 'their subsidiaries representin'. didn't mean your company per se, i meant all us industry. china holds the bulk of our debt, they're essentially our creditor....or our loan shark. creditors always like to see their debtors representin' i dream of electric sheep, myself. |

You got that backwards Tramp. The more accurate view is that we have all of China's money. They decide to not play nice with us, we have all their savings. Ask Iran how that is working out for them. |

Outrider- it is obvious that they have overbuilt in Shanghai and because of that the government has wisely made it more difficult to get new projects approved. Considering that we still have poverty here, I wouldn't expect the chinese to ever be without it either. We did see areas whose residents were suffering from extreme poverty. We also saw gated communities for the rich and untold numbers of hi rise apartment buildings for the new middle class. The fancy restaurants we ate at were full of Chinese, the shopping malls were full of Chinese. The streets were full of Chinese driving the 1st or 2nd car they have ever owned. Kids ride in the bike lanes on brand new scooters. I'm sure the untold number of construction workers, skilled workers, have a standard of living their parents never imagined. Oh, I also should have told you guys I went for a ride on the 250+ mph Maglev Train! Hey Eric, this "nurse" gave me a very nice massage

Scott...No disrespect for the people intended. I was questioning the government perhaps missing out on its social objectives for all of its citizens. |

Outrider- no problem I didn't take it that way! I'm not looking to have a political discussion, so I appreciate keeping the conversation light. I'm just reporting what I saw, what I learned, while I was on the ground. Feel good knowing that we are a company doing business in China the right way and that money is finding it's way into the hands of average Chinese citizens. The Maglev train was the bomb! Very smooth and pulled pretty hard for quite a while! I have a video, maybe I'll get it posted this week. No happy ending available at the beautiful and respectful place I got the massage. She didn't speak much english so I indicated what I wanted by placing her hand where it would do the most good and was answered "no". The massage itself was umm, extremely personal, so I thought I was in luck, but was mistaken!

oh, i understand, implicitly, the capital flow between china and the US. when you have someone's money, which you've borrowed, they hold your debt. hence, what's yours, by implicit collateral, is theirs. I entertain few fears about how the US intends to close the debt, if there's any intention toward satisfaction, at all. scott certainly received little satisfaction from the masseusse. a clear-cut case of: "it's a small load, I'll do it by hand" |

Your understanding from 7000 miles away is faulty Tramp- my massage was an excellent one and made my flight back later the same day a much more comfortable one! I plan on getting another next time I am there....Maybe you should try one, might help you relax some! Your understanding from a few states away is faulty too, like I said- I don't come to a motorcycle website to discuss politics..Start another thread if you like or add to one of the existing ones on the subject. Not flaming or even necessarily disagreeing with you, just not interested in having this thread about my trip turn into your thread about world economic doom and gloom. And I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I don't worry myself about the size of other guys load or how they take care of it. (Message edited by scott_in_nh on November 18, 2006) |

One night after dinner they took us to a refrigerated building that had dozens of colorfully lit ice sculptures. They handed out jackets as it was below freezing inside, but after a few minutes, it felt like home to me, though some of our visitors from warmer climes really froze! More importantly they had made several ice slides from mild to pretty wild with the best one being like a mini bobsled going though colored tunnels of ice!

Scott, I friend just got back from China. We are in the curtainwall business and so naturally he checked out all the activity, etc. But he says that they basically used high rise facades as giant TV screens for advertisements, etc. You see any of that? I think this was in Shanghai. |

scott- buy yourself a sense of humour. you're the one announcing to everyone that you put the hand of a hardworking, decent masseusse on your penis, in expactation of a handjob. in this country, that's actually sexual battery. she said 'no' (by your own account), so i presumed that you were unsatisfied. plus, i was making a joke that you didn't get. maybe you need more than a professioanl massage. next time you visit china, please don't represent my great nation by putting that nation's womens' hands on your penis. thank you. |

Jon, I did see that and it is spectacular to look at- that is where my references to Las Vegas and Times Square come from. Some lights were still on in the office buildings they were on, but no, I don't know how many of these buildings stand empty or near empty. Maybe it is a build it and they shall come? If I remember correctly, the Empire State building stood mostly empty for several years after it's completion.

Tramp nothing you have said indicates you have any sense of humor at all, so let it go brother. I should have indicated that I thought a happy ending might have been ok considering that she already had her well oiled hands all over my private parts without any encouragement from me. What else should I thought was going to happen when she locked the door and had me roll onto my back? Anybody who actually knows me know I respect people and woman in particular. I'm sure Chinese woman everywhere thank you for you concern... |

Scott, Thank you for handling personal insult so maturely. Interesting thread. Thanks for sharing. Tramp, Humor intended but not perceived deserves an apology, not indignant justification, certainly not personal attack. Don't you agree? Oh and the statement you made that "china holds the bulk of our debt" is inaccurate. Americans by far hold the bulk of America's national debt. China currently holds U.S. Treasury bonds that amount to around 3% of our national debt. Question: When you make significant financial investment(s) do you want the entity/entities in which you invest to fail or prosper? (Message edited by blake on November 20, 2006) |

Except for breakfast I ate meals with chopsticks all week and tried everything they put in front of us including jellyfish (Crunchy and chewy! It is the purple stuff in this photo):
eel, sweet and sour fish, dried fish, pork, beef, duck, chicken and unusual and exotic vegetables and sauces. The presentation was excellent!
I did ok with the chopsticks, but it was fun watching some of the Asians wrestle with a knife and fork the night we went to a German restaurant |

Oh and Buellgirlie, if you made it this far, I would recommend a foot massage, the woman who traveled with me raved about them, and bargaining hard for cultured pearls in the garden market (sorry I forget it's name, I can get it if it matters) |

this is the center of that market, it has a crooked bridge because they believe spirits can only travel in a straight line...
I bargained for some jade pendants with this nice, industrious young man. But it was my 1st purchase and I think he was very happy with the deal!

My girlfriend is Korean, adopted at 5 months old, grew up in good old Pennsylvania. I asked if she would like to take a trip to Korea, she said sure, but we have to put Manila, Shanghai, Port Moresby, Owen Stanley Mtns, Guam, Townsville, and Vietnam on the list, buy a Uly and hit up the Burma Road... I hope we strike it rich. Great pics Scott, Brian Cessna |

Striking it rich sure would be nice Brian, and travel would be at/near the top of the list if I did! Since I am not holding my breath waiting for that to happen, I did the next best thing and became an expert instructor/product specialist/application specialist for our equipment. Initially, no one asked me too, and it was outside of the scope of my job, but now I am in decent demand and am able to travel at the companies expense and benefit I am not well paid, but I do make the best of the opportunities available at a job and company I really like. I do hope you and your girlfriend find a way to do at least a portion of your trip- Find a way, you won't regret it! |
