Has anyone seen the NEW "Army Strong" commercial? If you take away the narration it is a good commercial, well you also have to take away "Army Strong". I'm sorry fella's but that is just stupid. The Army gave away one of the best slogans ever when they stopped using "Be All You Can Be", and this coming from a Marine. In their new commercial one of the things they say is, "give you the strength to get over things and the strength to get over yourself" WHAT THE HELL, THE STRENGTH TO GET OVER YOURSELF, LIKE YOU HAVE SOME FRIGGIN PROBLEM. HOW FRIGGIN STUPID. Who were the morons who came up with that, and who were the morons who approved it? I thought the Air Force had a stupid commercial a few years ago when they had the "Be cool like me" commercial, but dangit if the Army didn't go and top them. My sympathy goes out to all you Army Dawgs, hopefully they will one day bring back "Be All You Can Be". It would have been awesome with this new commercial, but now I guess you have to learn to "get over yourself". (Message edited by southernmarine on November 09, 2006) |

Is that the same one that shows a solder who came from a farming family? I thought that was a little stereotypical, and didn't reflect well on the quality of the army. I think that they should be better targeting the upper middle class, well educated suburban kids to let them know that it takes more then an education to achieve true success in life. |

No, this one is a different one. If they had left that statement out I believe that it would have been a much better ad for them, instead I just laugh my arse off at it. |

My new catch phrase for those complaining for no reason; "Oh, just go join the Army and get over yourself." |

Yeah those are terrible ads. Maybe the Army should have a guy rock climbing, or fighting a lava monster. Then they would be awesome. |

The ad is actually awesome, until you get to that one part, then it becomes funny, and I just can't take them serious after that. |

The chess game was the best Marine Corps commercial. The first one with the knight, the Lt that played the knight fell off the horse in a previous take and had to finish filming with a broken arm. LOL |

yet another milseading thread title -- I thought it was addressed to ME! ;-} as an ex-line animal, gotta say I've not seen the ad, but, with the exception of s afew of a Marine Corps spots, I don't think any of em hold any water . . . . course, I am so far outa the demographic they are trying to reach (don't think they are interested in the Spanaish American War anymore) |

do you still get a free Boonie hat or sportswatch That is just stupid marketing at it's best there. Did Ron Popeil come up with that ad? I kept waiting for them to say "but wait, there's more! You also get a two year supply of Oxiclean and some Ginsu knives" |

This is my Buell! There are many like it, but this one is mine! My Buell is my best friend. It IS my life! I must master it as I master my life. I will learn it as a brother. I will guard it against the ravages of weather and bad service departments. I will keep my Buell clean and ready to ride, even as I am (some what clean) and ready to ride. My Buell and myself are the defenders of the road.... So be it, until all Americans ride Buells and there is no posers but true BIKERS... |

I first heard about the new slogan a few weeks ago, and I agree it's stupid. "Be all you can be" was their best slogan. "An Army of One" didn't make any sense either, after all, it's all about teamwork. |

Be all you can be was good... in the 80's. This is a new era, and a new generation of Soldiers that we need to recruit. The people that think "Be all you can be" is the best ad campaign ever are the same people who are already in. The kids, (my junior Soldiers) like the new Army Strong commercials. This is good, since they're the closest in age, social status, and lifestyle to the actual recruits that will be joining in the next few years. (None of them, however, liked "Army of One" - the whole teamwork thing was lost in that one.) Some folks are just resistant to change, that's all. They're the same folks that think, "Basic training was much harder when I went through. It made much better Soldiers." Yeah, ok, whatever... |

It is funny though. When I was in recruiting school, they talked about the advertising. This is when the rock climbing commercial first came out. They said that it didn't matter if we connected with that commercial, because we weren't the target audience. If the folks from 17 to 21 identify with it, then the commercial is effective. Edit: J Walter Thompson is the advertising firm behind the Marine Corps commercials since the mid 80's with the sword forging commercial. (Message edited by eboos on November 10, 2006) |

The United States Army only needs to worry about two things: 1. Training my young brothers, and sisters, to be warriors 2. Don't screw up my retirement check |

They could do a John Kerry version. Maybe show a dark-skinned american minority growing up in the ghetto, flunking out of school, and resorting to crime... and as they show him running from the police it slowly changes to show him in uniform running in basic training. The tag could be something "Be the only thing you can be, in the Army" (Message edited by not_purple_s2 on November 11, 2006) |

Maybe they are aiming to recruit celebrities who need to "get over themselves"? Personally, I'd like to see something more to the point, like... "We kill terrorists. You up for that?" |

kind of reminds me of that old line you see on t-shirts and bumper stickers ; "join the army, travel to distant exotic places, see foreign and exotic people, and kill them". and even funnier the nat. guard and reserve ext. "but only on the weekends" |

You know, having just seen the commercial again during the Giants game, (go Giants!) I have to say that's a damn good commercial. And I'm looking at it as an older fart, (since '93) and I think the music and everything is way better than "Be...all that you can be...oh yeah...keep on reaching, keep on growing..." or whatever the hell they sang back in the 80's. All I ever think about with that theme song is "Stripes" and "Private Benjamin". Anyway, it fires me up. "There is nothing stronger in this green Earth than the US Army." Huah! |

i definitely agree with you leo, it's hardly a weekend warrior gig - 1 weekend a month and two weeks a year my ass! i was RA for 3 and NG for 6yrs, my guard unit liked to split the weekends and training weeks up so, i was at the armory damb near every weekend be it sat. or sun. and especially holiday mondays, doh! btw, thanks for protecting us! |

If you write to GoArmy.com and ask them what "Army Strong" means, you'll get the following response; Army Strong is about the men and women who have served, who are serving today, and about the next generation who has the opportunity to serve. Army Strong is an opportunity to transform young Americans into powerful individuals who are mentally, emotionally and physically strong. The Army and its Soldiers are strengthened by those who understand and support the decision to serve our nation. If you ask "SGT Star", you'll get the same response.

Southern Marine, It is a little cheesey - but it has some validity. Have you talked to many high school students lately? Especially to those who may join the Army? I teach in a high school and many of the military bound do need to get over themselves. You -better than anyone- know that is the primary purpose behind basic training - to tear the individual down and to build a team. I find the Air force ads to be sensationalist and a bit far reaching- they seem to show extremely specialized jobs - ie the ariel photographer, the fighter pilot, etc. Rare is the average joe doing those jobs - in fact I think many of their spokespeople are officers. I agree the "be all you can be" slogan was pretty catchy. One of my favorites was the navy commercial with godsmack playing in the background. Sometimes I regret not joining the marines although they probably wouldnt have me with my poor eyes and knee problems. At least I say I do contribute in other ways. |
