I ordered some safety gear from Planet-Knox in the UK last week. Today I got a call from Fedex wanting a very specific list of materials used to manufacture the items I bought and a bunch of paperwork filled out.

Anyone have any experience importing from the UK? I'm a bit worried that the gear is going to get shipped right back across the pond because I don't have enough information, or they may bar it based on the threat to our national security a mesh material may pose.

I've emailed Knox for the requested information, but have yet to hear from them. Evidently there is a five day timespan I am allowed to obtain this info.

Any ideas about what they will and will not allow into the country? I've never heard of anything like this and am a bit surprised that there was a problem.

They are specifically fishing for information about anything that may contain hazardous materials.

What did you order?

I got the Gilet Air torso protector (back/chest protector) and a pair of the Knox Cross Sport Shorts to wear under my leathers (hope they fit).

I have to call them back tomorrow in order to avoid having them shipped back and tell them something.

They were particularly interested in whether or not there was any plastic and whether the fabric was mesh or weave.

The website doesn't specifically name any materials, but does mention that the material is mesh. Wish I knew what they were looking for. Don't see how a box of crash pads could be considered hazardous.

I welcomed them to open up the box and look them over, but they just want a materials list. I'm faxing them copies of what the website is advertising, but I don't think that is going to fly.

I'll try and call Planet-Knox tomorrow too, but I'll have to get with the cellphone company to find out how to make an international call.

And I thought I was doing all the good using my fancy education to figure out the exchange rate. LOL! Not out of the woods yet...

There are some materials that are prohibited or restricted for importation. Especially natural fibres and animal hides cured a certain way. The exporter should have provided a complete list of the materials and manufacturing info for customs as part of the export documents. If they are missing, find out the fax # for the fedex customs broker and contact the manufacture. They should be able to provided all the info. As far as the other info the Fedex customs broker will want to know the value, your ss# (or Fed tax ID # if for a business)

As far as what is and what is not able to come in, search customs web sight and follow the trail. Most likely textiles and manufactured clothing would be a start.

Don't E-mail the exporter unless you have a specific contact. Call and get ahold of the shipping dept. They get paid to deal with those problems. If they want to sell you a product they will solve the problem.

Fedex knows you are the easy one to get ahold of.

In my last line of work, I delt weekly with import export from and to the UK. We brought jewelry in to the US. We caused FEDEX a huge headache about 7 years ago. One of the chains was a silver snake chain with a lobster claw clasp. the FEDEX broker contacted the feds and had the whole shipment impounded for illegal importation of prohibited marine species. When the customs officer called and wanted to know what we were importing (We did not know what was happening at that point) I explained that we were importing jewelry manufactured in the UK. He asked me to name some of the types. So I proceed to list some including the snake chain, panther chain etc. He explained what was going on. I pointed out that the import document clearly stated that it was jewelry and even had full descriptions. Hope that helps.

I wonder if some customs idiot thinks you are trying to import body armor (the bulletproof kind) ? There are numerous prohibitions against private citizens importing munitions. This is the only thing I can think of. 5 would inclined to tell them it is polyester mesh fabric, polystyrene and polyurethane foam. Avoid mentioning anything that could be construed as ballistic material (kevlar, etc)

Yeah, I told them on the phone it was all synthetic fabrics and described it as body armor for riding sportbikes. I did elaborate that it was not ballistic armor. The lady told me I was basically wasting her time and needed specific materials. Hopefully since I'm not importing wool, leather, or the like they'll let it through.

I've been reading here on the badweb all about how good this armor is. Right now I've been taking a chance riding with just the crummy little piece of foam my leathers came with they claim is a back protector.

I'll take the good advice listed here and put the burden on the Knox shipping department. If they want my $400, they're going to have to help me out. I'm not getting anywhere just emailing their customer service. It took three attempts to get them to reply to my questions before I even bought the items.

Just a note that the U.S.A is no allowing the importation of Vegemite due to it having folate added and this contravenes some food regulation. So do not mention that Vegemite is in any way connected or used in the manufacture of your back protector and you should be okay.

Well, if it doesn't work out for you, have it sent to a badwebber in Canada and then walk it over. That's what my Mom does when she mails me any green leafy substance, or animal hides or what have you.

Thanks everyone for the help. With your input, I was able to convince customs that there was no bulletproof Vegemite used in the manufacturing process at Planet-Knox.

The lady was most unimpressed when I told her the armor is for asphalt surfing only. She was more interested in knowing if the fabric was stretchy or not. ???

Evidently what I told her was good enough to get it into the country. I'm planning on ordering a tail section soon from Trojan-Horse. Reckon I'll have to also have it certified ballistic Vegemite free?

Well I'm happy to report that my Knox gear showed up at my office this afternoon.

Very nice equipment. I'm impressed with the fit and comfort, and will be more confident knowing I've got some of the best equipment money can buy. Hopefully I'll never get to find out if it really works.

"Just a note that the U.S.A is no allowing the importation of Vegemite due to it having folate added and this contravenes some food regulation."

Does that mean that I can't just smile and give you a Vegemite sandwich? If that's the case, you better run, you better take cover.

Kdan,

Your Mom supplies you with green leafy substance?

Smuggles it across the Canadian border on foot?

And then walks to Georgia?

I hope she's not doing all that just for spinach!

Glad to see you got your stuff. However,
All this begs the question. Marmite, Vegimite or Promite? I like Marmite. Just finished a jar of Vegimite given to me by a friend from Tasmainia not that long ago. Still prefer the Marmite. Not a big fan of Promite.
Is all Vegimite banned or just that from Austrailia?

Vegemite is a delicate addition to either the freshest bread or toasted bread you can find and is spread over the top of butter for the best taste experience. I read that it has been banned from importation due to folate being added and in America only folate can be added to bread only and it now is a black market item only. www.vegemite.com.au

Wow Dan, your mom is quite gifted. I enjoyed the sites displaying some of her work. They say that regular consumption of your greens stimulates creativity.
