It's official, "Billy" Lane was arrested and charged yesterday for drunken driving manslaughter by the Florida Highway Patrol. The results of his blood test revealed his BAC was over 2 times the legal limit when he killed the motorcyclist with his truck earlier this month. He was driving with a suspended license at the time as well stemming from a DWI event in North Carolina in June of this year. The SAD part of this story is that he was released on only $15,000 bail. I only hope his Judge dislikes motorcycles and tasteless TV shows. |

Not trying to stir the pot here too much but...why shouldn't Billy be treated any differently than the Senator from S.Dakota? I am in no way advocating DWI or any other irresponsible behavior; I have no affiliation with Billy Lane. This message was however approved by the NRA. NUTS |

Bad judicial decisions/punishment should not become a guideline for all cases following. Judges letting folks like this off should be removed from the bench (if not punished themselves). Billy Lane should be punished because he broke the law and killed someone in the process, not let off because some other schmuck got off easy. |

you think that is nutz. Here in Kenton ohio a couple of star Football players took a fake Whitetail deer (archery target) and put it in the middle of a two lane state highway after dark. A car swerved to miss it and crashed paralysising one of the passengers and the other has brain damage as I recall. The boys went to court and were found guild. They were sentenced.....but the sentences was not to start till after football season.... Not that is small town justice. Besides you all know that justice is not blind in the US. One for the rich and one for the rest of us. |

The SAD part of this story is that he was released on only $15,000 bail. It’s my understanding that the purpose of bail is to insure the accused will be available for trial, and is levied according to risk of flight, not as punisment. |

It's ashame that so many idolize these individuals. The Melbourne, FL area is a small community (my wife is from there) and the actions of Billy Lane should be viewed as dispicable by the residents. |

This is just a stupid and senseless waste of human life, Billy's and the man killed. This guy has habitual problems with drinking and driving. He has been caught in the past and got off lucky ( not killing anyone ). This time he should spend no less than 10 years of his life in prison. That doesn't even come close to the many years that man may have had left but it's a start. Drinking and driving is idiotic and we as a society need to start taking a much harder line than taking away your DL and a $2000 - $5000 fine. Time and time again this approach fails to work. |

I'm pretty sure they took his passport also. As for drunk driving I do not approve. However, what about the a$$holes who cause death and dismemberment without the valid excuse of being drunk? No-one is ever suprised to here that the driver at fault was drunk, because he's drunk...of course he crashed. The sober ones scare me more. |

Knotrider, while I was about to write a rebuttle of the "valid excuse of being drunk" statement, I couldn't get past the idea of the sober drivers that are so inattentive or just have no reguard for anyone else. Those scare me more as well. I was just reading on Roadracingworld.com about a woman who ran down a rider, then took off. This person knew that they caused another person serious injury, but didn't feel that the person's life was worth the extra premium on their insurance. What a sorry state our sociaty is in. Not claiming to be the best driver in the world, but I managed to be accident free for the entire 14 years that I have been driving. I am not some nobel prize winning humanitarian, but if I were to cause another person injury, or had stumbled across someone needing assistance, I would help them. I hope that I do not represent some shrinking minority on this issue. |

I'm sure we all have plenty of stories about sober cage drivers with cellular phones growing out of their ears almost taking us out. I know I do. Do I condone drunk driving? Of course not. I'll even confess that I have a conviction for it on my record. I'm not proud of it and I have learned my lesson. But I'll take my chances on my bike with a handful of Billy Lanes vs. the legions of minivan driving soccer moms and newly minted high school aged drivers behind the wheel yammering away on their phone calls any day. Impaired driving is impaired driving regardless of the cause, but enforcement is not. I would like that to change. And no, I don't use my cell phone when I drive. Most of the CDL holders I know, will not ever answer/talk on the phone while driving. I always thought it was wierd considering they use the CB so much, but when driving is your livelyhood, and one accident can cause the loss of a liscense... |

Boy, you've never driven in Orlando then! I'm guessing that 75% of the big rig drivers I pass on I-4 and the other major arteries around town are yacking away on their cell phones. It should be against the law for everyone, but definitely for those with CDL's. |
