my 98 4runner has a strange issue that I was hoping you folks could lend me a hand with. The vehicle runs and shifts normally, but while downshifting to pass at highway speed it develops a strange problem. It will downshift into OD(3rd) normally, but if required to downshift into 2nd for more passing power it develops a loud clunking sound coming from what seems to be the area near the right front wheel. the engine revs normally and 2nd seems to engage. T Fluid level is fine, T fluid and filter are new, but I am not convinced it is actually a transmission problem, due to the fact that it shifts smoothly and normaly at all other times. At lower speed on steep uphill grades I can shift down into 2nd gear without a problem, the problem only happens at about 50mph or higher. Any ideas what the possible problem could be? any help is greatly appreciated. 98 toyota 4runner v6/4wd/auto approx 136,00 miles |

Transfer case possibly, maybe something wrong with front axle. I suggest taking it to a driveline specialist. Can you make it repeat the problems? (intentionally make it mess up?) |

I think it's broken. |

I would start with CV axles and wheel bearings for that mileage and noise. Might be two seperate problems. --Sean |

I've learned that it will repeat the noise any time I make it downshift into second, or manually shift it into second at that speed or higher. Thanks again folks. |

Second gear only? What about "gunning" it when it is in 1st? CV axles and U-joints would make a "knock knock knock knock" (relative to speed) sound. Transfer case could be something slipping out (noise you describe maybe). Simple thing to do, climb underneath and give the axles a good shaking. If the move one way or another too much then you have found the problem. If you can, take some pictures of the area for me.. |
