I am considering sending this letter to Dear Abby, maybe you all can help first... Dear Abby, I've never written to you before, but I really need your advice on what could be a crucial decision. I've suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs... Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with the girls a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, "Just some friends from work, you don't know them." I always stay awake to look out for her taxi coming home, but she always walks down the drive, although I can hear a car setting off, as if she has gotten out of the car round the corner. Why? Maybe she wasn't in a taxi? I once picked her cell phone up just to see what time it was and she went berserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her. Anyway, I have never broached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn't want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. I decided I was going to park my Harley Davidson next to the garage and then hide behind it so I could get a good view of the whole street when she comes home. It was at that moment, crouching behind my Harley, that I noticed that the rocker boxes on my engine seem to be leaking a little oil. Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the dealer? Thanks, Harleydude |

"..except they used a buell." Fair enough. Two years ago I bought a Buell and it developed leaking rockers 1,000 miles or so later. Changed paper gaskets to metal and all was cool. This spring I sold the Buell and bought a '97 Dyna FXD and a few hundred miles later the rockers started leaking. And it already had the metal gaskets. But the leaks on the FXD were due to the covers being held on with some high speed chrome screws that had been installed with hard plastic washers instead of the thicker fiber seals that come in the Buell gasket kits. I think someone just used the wrong gaskets when it had a rings and valves job last fall. I re-torqued the rocker boxes on the FXD and replaced the plastic washers with some home made fiber washers and now the FXD has been okay for a few hundred miles. Jack |

I bought my X1 with 4400 miles on it and the rockers started leaking a several hundred miles later. Due to the guy before me hardly road it in the 4 years he owned it. Leaving the bike sit with the old paper gaskets is not good, the gaskets will dry out and crack. Both the front and rear where leaking on mine i change them out for the graphite gaskets have put over 6000 miles on it in the last 4 months with no major problems. |

There`s nothing wrong with an oil leak. It means your motor gets fresh oil on a regular basis, & it prevents corrosion on all surrounding & downwind parts. |

or " I hope it's leaking, that's the only way I know it still has oil in it..." |
