I was talking bikes to a very financially successful friend , who rides a Bimmer, at a family gathering recently and we were joined by another very successful friend, an accountant, who stated that he had sold his Harley and was itching to get a new one. I , tongue in cheek, stated that under no circumstances should he get a harley. He looked at me questioningly as if I was about to reveal a long sought universal truth, or tell him that the HD's are s#1t, and he asked "Why not?". I replied that there were already enough accountants riding Harleys. Another friend who was within earshot almost spit his beer all over his aunt. Seriously I love all bikes, but it was amazing to see the 2 "stereotypes" side by side - the rich Bimmer owner and the rich HD owner- each with his own set of preordained and unshakeable values about what a bike is. My philosophy, is ride whatever the f!@# you can afford or care to ride, but ride the b^lls off of it. WRT to the HD ad, HD has once again proven themselves marketing geniuses. They successfully caught the image of the real biker, and attracted the attention of those who want to be bikers, and got all of us talking about it too. |

I'll bet with the change of a few words, a change of scenery, and a change of brand, and most everyone would think it was a very cool commercial. ...and Ill be able to afford a $20,000 bike... That's some dealer mark up! |

Wanna be badass? Wanna be different? Fart BIG, fart LOUD and fart LONG in a crowded elevator - now THAT's being badass - and NOT riding a particular bike, or choosing a particular "lifestyle" unless your lifestyle includes maybe tribal warfare and cannibalism. On the whole, I really do like the ad. Just really kind of comes out of left field... It's not like anything I've seen in the way ads from the mothership & I think that's what made me put any thought into it at all. |

The building chorus of voices creeped me out, too cultish. Reminded me of church during one of the responsive readings. Otherwise, it was fine. I would simply have alternated from one voice to another instead of combined them all, on account of that creeped me out. |

Slaughter: I did that once, not in an elevator, but on the surface of a wooden desk in a co-worker's office in New Orleans. It was, I think, 1974 or '75. Old friends still tell me that most the most gas I've ever found... rt "You screw one goat... |

Not that I'm anti-homosexual, but, thats quite possibly the gayest commercial I've ever seen. Boy am I glad those loosers priced me out of the garbage barge market. So that even if I did bump my head I won't end up with one of those junks. |

At least they aren't riding Jap bikes, err, metric cruisers (don't wanna make the Jap bike lovers cry). Riding a fake Harley is really GAY, there is no logical excuse. Bikes that cost more bring back more, Harley-Davidson motorcycles are more reliable too. If one must ride a cruiser, at least ride the best. Buying a Jap cruiser is like deciding to go to Ruths Chris for a steak dinner and on the way stopping at Burger King to eat instead because it's beef |

I watched the commercial and liked it! I love my Buell for what it does for me, but I totally respect Harley-Davidson for what they have brought to the motorcycling industry! It's an AMERICAN legend in the motorcycling industry! When it comes time for me to own a cruiser, it will be a Harley-Davidson. |

Ditto what Knotrider said: Not that I'm anti-homosexual, but, thats quite possibly the gayest commercial I've ever seen." Sat on a Ulysses when I was in Dothan, Alabama,"The other promised land" specifically to see if "Moms fat ass could climb up on one" (Apparently the wrong thing to say).... When she got up on it and found out it was on the second story (She is afraid of heights) the well meaning salesman directed us to a barge where she had no problem getting up on it and she ooh'd and aah'd about how "Thats what she wanted" And "If I loved her"..... I'm just not ready |

tying back to Reg's thread again -- how can the company that came up with that ad (love it or not, it's effective, yes?) miss the bullseye so regularly with Buell ads . . . . it's clear that whoever funded and approved of the ad allowed the creative team to do their homework, find a slightly left of center approach, and execute on that approach in a first class manner . . . it would be fun to see the same talent brought to bear on Buell ads wrt un-Jesus -- the phrase "man up stairs" is used by more than christians -- to be honest, it wouldn't have occured to me to link the ad to religion (and I'm betting the creative team didn't try to either) |

If you've seen one you've seen them all. The rebel non-conformists in their rebel, non-conformist, uniforms on the same rebel, non-conformist, motorcycles. |

Still much better than the "Star" line of motorcycle ads where they are all trying to look like HD riders on their imitation Harleys. That ad is just too funny for words. |

I liked the HD one. And while it didn't put enough kaki wearers in it for some people it did make me wanna ride, which may not be saying much, but I think it got the point across... |

I attended Harley Primary Officer Training for my BRAG chapter. Imagine that add, on three huge walls of a very large auditorium, killer sound system, and a thousand of those identical "non-conformists" in the room. The words "cult" and "indoctrination" immediately came to my mind. It was overwhelming to say the least. I just got back from "Bike Week" in Ocean City, MD. It was 95% Harleys. They are friendly, nice folks but they seem like clones to me. Live and let live .... it's just not for me. I've been riding over 46 years now and I still ride for the rush, the adrenalin hit, the pure exhilaration of spirited run. Knifing through a corner like a scalpel, slamming the next gear, that's where it's at for me. I also ride motorcycles because I enjoy being different, not the same different, but DIFFERENT. That's why I picked a Buell. I frankly wish there were less bikes on the road. So few that legislators didn't even see us. |

You can be different even if you ride a Kawasaki KE100. It is not the motorcycle, it is the content of the character of the rider. The rider defines the motorcycle. The motorcycle should not define the rider. I understand what you are saying. |

Now I know I'm not all that old, but, "The Man" is as I recall it a direct reference to your boss. He is "The man in charge". Another reference is to police, so it depends on the situation. As for the references to HD, that would be the stickers they sell at the counter that has "FTF" on it. I hope I don't have to explain the letters to ya'. Now look, I've gone and taken all the fun out of it. As for the video, I like it for what it is. The cinematic aspects of it look similar to the stuff that was on the Buell CD that was sent out sometime back. At least that's what I think. |

I am confused. How can HD suppose to sell more bikes with an add, where they make fun of their customers: A parody, made out of totally worn out clichés. Or do they really think that the movie is a modern dream of future owners ? Are they under estimating USA citizens that much? Hans |

Everyone else makes fun of their customers, why shouldn't they? I thought that clip was very realistic in portraying the typical Harley rider of today, they want the 1% image but have the 100% mentality of dressing the same to be different. |

Mainstream Biff and Buffy used to complain that 1%ers gave Harley-Davidson and motorcycling in general a bad name. Now it's mainstream Biff and Buffy (and their stunt riding buffoon offspring) giving 1%ers and motorcycling in general a bad name. |
