My desktop won't connect to the net the integrated modem isn't buzzing clicking or squeaking. I've followed the troubleshooting guide but it's no help. According to the test system the modem is ok. I found this problem the first time I tried to log on after an electrical storm, don't know if it's connected. I'm running Me upgraded to Xp; & use Aol 9;0. As you can tell it's not the phone line as the laptop is fine. Anyone got any suggestions that won't cause me brain fade. |

Make sure you have a copy of the drivers disks, go into hardware manager and delete the modem. Turn off the computer and see if it finds it on reboot, and reinstall the drivers. It happened after an electrical storm? It is possible the the modem is fried (I have seen them take a hit and still test well, but never get dialtone again). You say it is integrated? IE built onto the motherboard or is it an add on card (Sorry if the causes brain fade). IF an add on card, try removing and reseating it, if possible in a different slot. (not sure of your comfort zone inside the case, so if this is too scary, bribe a geek..) Hope that helps. |

Have you tried turning the modem off, and then back on a minute later? This will reset the IP address, and may resolve your problem. |

The 3 fingered salute ALWAYS works for me! Only problem is I can never find the Control key... Is that anything like the Ctrl key? Sorry about the lack of humor on my part... 1313 |

I don't know much about computers, but when I had a similar problem, I unplugged everything then plugged it back in and it worked. |

You have two places to plug the phone line in on the computer, the right one is "Line" the other is for attaching a telephone instrument. The telephone one won't work. So if you unplug the telephone cord from the wall and plugged it into your laptop and it worked, trying that same cord in both of the two connectors on the computer should get you a dial tone on one or the other. The inputs are probably marked but can be damn hard to see. Sometimes line is called wall, sometimes phone has a phone-like figure or is not marked. I assume you're testing the modem from the modem's Properties/Diagnostics tab in the Device Manager, that is an internal test that assures that the modem is communicating with the system. It prints out lines of info about the mode starting with AT... The diagnostics check the modem but are no assurance that the modem is connected to a line (has dial tone). Jack |

I just delt with the same problem with a friends computer. I did everything by the book. Deleted and reinstalled twice. rechecked all the settings Computer said modem was fine but when I tried to connect it told me the modem was not installed. Got a new in the box modem uninstalled the old, started fresh with the new and it worked first time. New one works better and faster anyway so it worked out fine. Hope that helps.

Yup I think that's it. My nephew called today & I told him about it, he's doing a IT degree or something beyond my comprehension at university, & he reckons the modem is probably toast. He's a good lad though as he says I can have his old one because he's on high speed & doesn't need it, he'll even install it for me, result. Well he owes me for doing the brakes on his Renault 5, so it evens out. Thank you all for your input. |

Well Technically my cable modem is still a modem as it MOdulates and DEModulates the signal on the cable line. Same deal with a DSL modem. And dialup isn't all that bad.... (for some people, we are still signing up new dialup customers much to my surprise). |

Doon, while technically you may be correct, I don't believe that's what he's talking about, and therefore I repeat: Grumps, I'd be grumpy too if I was still stuck with dial-up. Good chance the modem is fried. If you need another, I can probably find one lying around to send out... |
