I have struggled to post pics small enough for badweb's requiurments. I have tried the suggested Xat Image optimizer with no luck on compressing the files small enough to look good like those that others post. Is there a better software or method. any help is appreciated.

Some of the really brilliant pictures I have seen are slightly over the maximum file length.
I am using a two step procedure: First resize with Irfanview, with or without reducing color depth.
Then with the 80 percent compression on the Image optimizer and then with the Xtra compression of the licensed edition.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
If you have Windows XP, this has a program to resize your photos.

For jpg files... In the www.xat.com image optimizer, first resize the photo to no more than 640 pixels x 480 pixles or 480 x 640 depending upon orientation of the photo. Then use the magicompression set to around 50 or 60 and quality set anywhere from 70 to 90 in order to obtain a file size that comes in under the alloted 70 KB. It's always been very easy for me using that technique to get files sizes well under the limit. : )

Just as a test.

Original:
73kb

Optimized with Xat.com optimizer:
37.7kb

Same physical size, nearly half the digital size.

I can't see a large difference in optical quality.
I could get the size much smaller, but it will start to sacrifice quality.

Blake....I thought the Max file size was 60kb?....I size in Photoshop to no larger than 8 inches wide at a pixel per inch rate of 72....then use the pro Xat set at 59,000kb max(max on quality...whatever compression that reaches)but if Blake says 70kb I'm stretching that out!!!

I've found that if I resize the pictures so their width is 550 pixels, they generally compress fairly easily to Badweb size requirement while still being large enough to enjoy.

It is also very helpful to crop the images to remove anything that you don't care about. This makes it a lot easier to see the stuff you do care about. Consider:

I like the bottom one better, you can see my pretty face. :-) It's got a smaller file size as well. Most image editing programs can crop.

Just click on the pic... it is pretty much self explanatory.

The problem with large files is that they:

1: blow the proportions of the page out and make people need to scroll to see the picture (annoying)

2: they can take a long time to load. Being courteous to people that do not have a high speed connection is a good thing.

3: resolution on the web is limited to 72dpi anyway, so having a large file with super high resolution is pointless.

Putting up mongo huge photos via some pic hosting enterprise is not optimal in my view. For one, it send the page over-width for many of our visitors. Second, it is inevitable that at some point the pic will be lost and only the dreaded red "X" will be there to take its place. Much better to upload our pics to BadWeB where they will be stored forever. Yeah, I have the site willed to another Buell enthusiast should I kick the bucket. That person may curse my demise should it come prematurely. LOL

Users on here still have 56k? My apologies.

One reason I like using that hosting program is that it copyrights the uploaded photo's to the uploader (me). Instead of allowing other people to claim them.

I don't need to scroll to see the entire picture, if you do my apologies.

If I have pictures I don't value very much, or if I am in a hurry, I usually just use Microsoft Picture Manager to resize/crop photo's for posting.
