so,i'm finally in the final stages of getting the x1 Back together again. i was installing the race header (thanx chasespeed) and i broke off an exhaust stud. so i tried drilling a hole and using a easy out screw extractor.the easy out broke off also!! so now i'm kinda S.O.L... i got an extractor off the snapon truck today, but i'm pretty worried about using that now.. any suggestions would be great! it's on the front jug,and the aft stud.. if i have to completely drill out the broken stud, would i be able to re-tap it? is putting another stud, one or two sizes larger an option???again, any help is greatly appreciated!!! |

prez -- lots pof data in the KV, and also in a thread further down this very page -- it's a PITA, for sure, but doable if you go slow and are patient |

thanx bomber.. i read the mentioned post.. i should probably add that my exhaust stud is broken off below the surface that the exhaust clamp mates up to..atleast .25'' below.. and i also have to get the easy out,out... and it's not a flat clean break on the easy out..it's all jagged.. i'm letting the whole stud soak with "mouses milk" for atleast a day.. and i just bought a brand new snapon tap and dye set,i know i shouldnt be too eager to use it on this particular job,but i kinda am..lol..and i'm gonna check out the "Helicoil" route also.. i'm not familiar with it,but from what i get from the description,it's basically an anchor type device.. like you use for screws in drywall..but obviously for metal uses.. anywho..thanx again..PREZ |

Prez - wow, someone else just snapped a header stud off an X1. Read this. It documents my experiences drilling out a broken header stud on the Blast and is a summary of all the advice I got. It isn't so bad to drill the thing out. I would helicoil (or some other brand) it rather than trying to ez-out it. If you break off the ez-out you are sort of screwed at that point. :-) |
