Ordered my first full face helmet should be here early next week. Is there anything special I should clean my visor with as not to scratch it?

Honda spray polish (hard to get) or Plexus spray polish work nicely.

I also use the Wee-Willy system (http://www.weewilly.com), which is great and travels well in a tankbag.

Any kind of sunglass cleaner with chamois will work. Diluted dish-soap (1-2 drops per oz of water) also works fine.

Whatever you do, DON'T use windex or paper towels. The ammonia in the windex can damage the shield, and paper towels can scratch the shield pretty easily.

Congrats on your new helmet purchase, and glad to see you taking care of that noggin!

When the bugs are dried on, lay a moist cloth on the visor to re-hydrate the bugs before you try and clean them off.

Good tip. They only hold on because they are thirsty.

At home, I take the shield off the helmet use dish soap and lots of warm water. Out on the road, I use a small microfiber rag and eyeglasses cleaner that's safe for plastic lenses. Never scrub the bugs off; let the cleaner/soap/whatever do the work.

One hint, if you're ever out on the road without your cleaning supplies, you might be tempted to use that windshield squeege at the gas station. Take a good look into that tub before you put that thing up to your face. You'll be surprised what you might find.

: ) My son's favorite game, when he was a little fella, was wait until I had everything zipped up and he'd put two huge thumb prints over both eyes and run.

I get good memories out of dirty visors so that must mean I'm getting old.

A good trick for getting bugs off while you're out on a ride is to carry the little sealed hand wipe packets you can get from KFC or places that serve hot wings. The alcohol-soaked wipe does a great job removing bugs and doesn't scratch or leave a residue.

I always grab a few any time I'm in a restaurant that has them and keep a few in my riding jacket pocket.

I just use running hot water to get the bugs off. I don't use any cleaners at all.

Plexus is just the greatest.

It not only cleans, but t polishes and makes the visor almost invisible.

I also use it on my glasses: they have never been so clean.

As an added bonus, it is the best thing I have found to clean and polish the black plastic body parts on my bike.

I mix a little dish soap into a spray bottle filled with alcohol, seems to work well.
I use it to clean my eyeglasses also.

I keep a packet of lens cleaning paper in the tank bag -- fills in nicely for visors as well as the camera

weewiley is a great tool, and just recently found a joint that sells plexus in lil pump bottle about the size of a chap stick!

I've been using Pledge furniture polish for years. I still don't have those fine scrathes or yellowing that usually comes with age. The wax helps the little buggies come off a bit easier too.

S2000 detail and wax. Great for the shiny bike bits, and good for the helmet too, one bottle does all. : ]

I use a combination of windex and paper towels at home and paper towels and spit on the road. I guess I just don't care enough. These all sound like good alternatives though. Fast&Loose. NUTS

Careful with some polishes/waxes if you have an iridium(or similar) coated visor. The coating will polish right off(don't ask)

Hot Water and bit of soap works the best.. If its hot enough your only have to dab a few spots of water off..

I actually even do this when I'm on the road and have the luxury of stopping somewhere with a decent bathroom

I also carry some some novus 1 in a small spray bottle..

Novus 2 & 3 work well to take some scratches out.. Yes I don't but any coated visors.. They look cool but they all eventually look like Crap and LEO aims a laser your giving him a hell of a target with some of these reflective coatings... Clear or Smoke for me...

I do use Plexus just for the anti fog propertys. CAT CRAP works the best for anti fog...

Teddagreek has it: Warm soapy water and a bounty paper towel very soft paper towel. Guarantee you never scratch the visor. If you ever buy a mirrored visor do the same they scratch very easy. This is how i have cleaned my visors for the past 10 years and have never scratched them.

Once you've dropped the helmet and scrape the crap out of the visor, you can just wipe it off with anything if the bugs get to thick.

Mike
I second the Pledge spray.
Been using it for years with no problems.
It's getting very hard to find the little cans to stuff in the tank bag though... anyone know where to get them?

I think our Hy-Vee food store still does. Ride down and pick up a can.
