There's a lot of great pic's over on Sacborg from the event. LAND SPEED - Chris Carr Sets New Land Speed Record By Jean Turner - Cycle News Carr Breaks 350 mph 9/5/2006 For 16 years the two-wheeled land speed record has gone untouched, but history is being made this week at Bonneville - a dogfight has begun. After 32 years of chasing the world record that he once owned, Dennis Manning finally regained his title today as the BUB Enterprises streamliner, sponsored by Ford, was driven by Chris Carr to a recorded speed of 350.885 mph. Mike Akatiff's "ACK Attack" streamliner set the record at 342.797 mph just two days ago - which was 20 mph over the previous standing record - and already, they have been dethroned. In their first run of the week, which was only intended to be a warm-up, the BUB streamliner reached the timed mile at 354.832 mph. The team was surprised and elated at the remarkable speed. "We didn’t recalculate the tire, so [Chris Carr] thought he was only going 325 - that’s what I told him to do," Manning said. "We were 30 miles an hour off - what the hell?" "According to my dash, I went in at 327 and went out at 340," Carr said. "That’s according to my data. Then they told me the speed was 354 and basically my chin hit the salt. I was in shock. The reality of what we’re trying to do set in real quick. We had some work to do and we had to do it quick." The team's return run proved a bit more challenging with a wind slowly picking up. But Carr managed to stay in control through the crosswind and climb to a speed of 346.939 mph, setting the new record and also being the first to cross the 350-mph barrier on two wheels. "I can’t describe the feeling I have right now," said an emotional Carr. "This came a lot quicker than we expected. We didn’t expect our first run to be as good as it was. This may last four hours until somebody else breaks it, but ain’t nobody in the world faster than me right now, today - right now," As the BUB team continued to celebrate, in the background, the ACK Attack was pulling up to the starting line, ready to return fire. The Top 1 team was in sheer disbelief of Carr's run, although team owner Mike Akatiff seemed almost amused. "This is competition at its finest - right here," Akatiff said. "This is great drama." The ACK Attack completed three more runs throughout the day, reaching speeds of over 349 mph, but not reaching 350. But the team has no intention of letting Manning walk away with the world record, and will be very busy in the next two days. The BUB team also has more runs planned throughout the remaining two days of the International Speed Trials. A third contender, Sam Wheeler, arrived at the Salt Flats today. Wheeler is the current SCTA record holder, and is patiently waiting until the right moment to take to the course. History has already been made twice, and with two days still remaining, we could see a three-way shootout before the International Speed Trials by BUB is over. Well excuse me but there must be a spanner in the works then. I access BadWeB every time using the Messages since I last searched for new messages: facility, which must equate to a dozen times in the last 48 hours, and not once has that page showed up in the search tree. Never the less I've edited my post so I don't look like a jerk, and my humble apologies to the person I was shooting at. Rocket |

I just checked the time of the last post on the Bonneville page and I'm not getting them in my search. There are at least two new messages posted to the topic since I last searched........ Ok, problem solved. Seems I've not been getting the racing page or the Big Bad Uly page for I don't know how long. For some reason the boxes weren't ticked to enable them as favourite pages I search for. I don't know why or how that happened but it leaves me thinking I've missed out on a hell of a lot of topics, especially Bonneville wise, for I know not how long..........and I'm well pissed off over it. Just saw Carr at Springfield a couple of days before this effort -- the man is a machine! very cool to watch him take his victory lap at the short track with his wife and child aboard -- celebrating his 75th GN win this is yet another high point in his career -- there seems to be no stoping the guy! |
