There was a light-hearted test on UK TV the other day about how long a modern car would stand up to wilful abuse. Amongst other things, the car: * ran for 7 miles with NO engine oil * ran for 5 miles in 1st at max rpm * tyres were inflated to 300 psi before they exploded It kindof puts things into perspective when we're concerned about one notch too low on the oil or the occasional missed upshift |

This might sound like a dumb question but, why would it matter if you ran at full RPM in first gear as opposed to any other gear? Which components would fail because of this? Would they fail because there isn't sufficent load? |

I think they ran the cars in 1st so that they would be going relatively slowly if (when) anything went wrong. Some of them literally exploded, others just expired in a plume of white smoke. |

Here's something along the same lines with a Toyota pickup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQltQ6Qzdb4&NR |

Teenagers.....JEESH! My Big Kid can F...UP just about anything. I mean he really tries, the only other thing he puts effort into like this is his girlfriend. Right now he is riding on a tire with a patch of cord showing the size of a half dollar. When I asked him how his rear tire was doing he says fine. He actually got a little put off when I showed it to him, like "it was OK till you showed me that". I got more, just ask... |

OK Swampy. We got more in common than just trucks. Wanna get in a contest about kids F'in up stuff? I just posted pic's about my project X1 and how proud I was of it. My kid took it on it's maiden voyage to show his friends Dad (a Harley guy) on this 4 mile 10 minute roundtrip, somehow, he says it was a deer, he ends up loosing it at a very low speed thankfully, but put a dent in the tank and busts the shifter. If it wasn't for loving memories of his childhood this kid would be dead. PS: The bike, in my mind, was going to be a gift when he got out of the Marine corps. That's why I was taking my time and putzing with each part and took 2 years to put to together. BUT! he got an early exit so he'll never know. If they couldn't teach him to control himself, what am I supposed to do? |

Would they fail because there isn't sufficent load? Back in high school, I had a female friend who was scared to shift up,so she drove around in first gear ALL THE TIME! She drove a VW Rabbit Diesel. And drove it for about a year and a half! Until the motor siezed on loop 410 in San Antonio during morning rush hour! I'd like to have been the one driving during these test! |
