Not much of a storm for a Coastal North Carolina resident. A strong Tropical Storm with winds of 70mph. The winds at the house hit as high as 60mph and that was about 4:30am, I know because it woke me up. So I get up this morning and get ready for work. I did not expect much from a Tropical Storm, the weather guy on TV shows the storm on radar and I realize that what I thought was the end of the storm, was actually the eye of the storm, and the house is dead smack in the middle of it. So I leave in the eye of the storm and head to work. Sorry, if its not a Cat 2 or greater, it doesn't worry me much. I say that since Coastal North Carolina has been hit more than thirty times by hurricanes since I moved here in 1992 (I guess they are ready for me to move away huh). To look at the bright side of living in a state that must have more direct hits than any other state in the Union (At least recently), this state knows how to deal with a tropical storm. The State and Local governments, plus the residents have been through these storms many times. So this little storm was no big deal, but I still spent the day helping neighbors clean up. The Flash floods that followed the storm took me by surprise this morning. The major 4-lane highway going south was closed because a section was under water. I knew it would so I went over land route through about six water crossing to get the work. The wife calls and says our little downtown area is flooded and it got a neighbor's Beauty Salon. So I spent tonight with a shop vac cleaning out the shop the best we could. It really turned out better than I thought it would. I pulled 15 gallons of water out of the carpets which are an indoor/outdoor with no padding underneath and cement floor. Again, we have been through this before. The wife took some pictures.     I took a video of a boat going across the road at this rail road crossing during the major flood that came after Hurricane Floyd. It was pretty funny because the Railroad Crossing gate and bells were going due to the switch box being under water. Then instead of a train you see a boat cross the road. |
