Yes, Matt, I was offended by your remarks in the "Hard Ride" thread. I grew up in Long Beach, Ca in the border area with Compton, Ca. There is only one type of person I EVER saw riding a chopper made from a 1970's Jap I4. I will not say what kind of person that was because I don't want to be branded. I will go on to say, however, that these same people are the types who drive Impala's with hydraulics and cheesey paint jobs and eat at Roscoe's all the time. I found your remarks as hateful, bigoted. I replied to the thread mention that your statement was bigoted. It sounded as if you were saying that if you weren't lily white and lived in up-scale neighborhood you were crap. I am not trying to put words in your mouth, it is my persception. I am Hispanic, and lived in Orange County for more than 38 years. Never lived in the cities you referred to. However, I did eat at Roscoe's (you know the crowd) many times. I wasn't offended by you, I just thought your comments concerning asian choppers to be asinine and ignorant. I also dig lowriders (when done right) because they show someones love for a particular vehicle. Cars, motorcycles whatever, I don't knock someones work if I don't like it, because I can appreciate their dedication. by the way, I'm a white guy from kansas. | ||

I figured if Jesse Jackson can make a career out of being offended anytime there's some air time and a buck to be had, I might as well be offended so I can cash in as well, So ya, I'm offended... Wow, what a lively set of responses! I do appreciate this input very much as I am a sensitive person whether I appear that way or not. I will now address the offended persons in the manner which is appropriate and deal with the issues raised forthrightly. I found your remarks as hateful, bigoted. I replied to the thread mention that your statement was bigoted. It sounded as if you were saying that if you weren't lily white and lived in up-scale neighborhood you were crap. First, calling me lily white is exactly the same as calling a black guy the N word. I offered my personal observations in the part of the world I lived in at the time. I didn't always live in an upscale neighborhood. From age 2 to 7, I lived in Newark, California. In those days there were about 5 rows of cheap tract housing, a Leslie/Morton Salt factory, a papermill who's name I can't recall, and an FMC Chemical refinery, all within 2 miles of my house. It was a gang infested area, gunfire very common. I had to fight every kid around, and got my ass kicked as much as not. My single mom did the best she could on $8,000 a year to feed my brothers and me with no help from any of our fathers. At age 7, we moved to North Long Beach. Just above the Carmelitas Projects. Just below compton. I lived there until I bailed high school in 11th grade. I already had 2 sons of my own by that time. Do you imagine my life has been easy? Do you imagine that your opportunities have been less than my own? I defy that logic completely. In fact, I decry it as a completely unreasonable point of view, and ignorant to boot. I'll go ahead and reveal to you that you were offended by nothing, since I was not referring to Hispanics at all. No, to the contrary, they were black. I've been surrounded by black people all my life, and they are people to me just like anyone else. Is it wrong for me to say that every time I saw a CB750 dropped and stretched that a black guy was riding it? THE NEIGHBORHOODS I LIVED IN WERE PREDOMINANTLY BLACK AND IF YOU KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA YOU WOULD KNOW THAT. I'll continute to say that most of the Mexican guys I know with lowriders have SWEET paint jobs. Is it because they are Mexican? NO, it's because they are creative. And because, quite truthfully, a lot of paint shops are run by Mexican families. Just ask Ernesto who painted my trucks. Great job at a great price, period. That's turning into a tangent so I'll just summarize with this: If it is racist for me to call it how I see it, then so are you. I am no bigot. There are leaves and branches of many colors and creeds in my f'ed up family tree, so don't presume to call me a f'ing bigot. NEXT.... Being the Dean of Discipline at the School of Hard Knocks has it's advantages. I have had a lot of good and bad experiences and I try to convey the wisdom (or lack thereof) in the choices I have made, to benefit others. I understand that big words don't always play so musically to others as they do to me, but please feel free to correct my English if I am in error. I take my grammar and punctuation very seriously, as it lends weight to my subject matter, whatever it may be. The power to express oneself clearly in the most versatile language on the planet is a great thing, more people should try it. NEXT... it kind of offended me when you implied I am neglecting my XB by servicing it at 5000 mile intervals. :-) I service my Peterbilt 378 at 6000 mile intervals and it holds 22 quarts of oil. I'm just sort of picky about that kind of thing, I didn't mean to offend you. If the manufacturer recommends that interval on your bike then by all means follow it, there is some better engineering on the newer bikes. I didn't intend to disparage your maintanence practices, so for enduring that you have earned my sincere apology. NEXT... Just what we need. Another pedantic biker. I can't decide if you chose the word pedantic because of its duplicitous meaning so I guess I'm just full of myself when I assume that you mean it in the good way, even though your statement implies the opposite. You, like everyone else, are entitled to your opinion. Finally... I'd like to thank EVERYONE for their responses, positive and negative alike. I was fishing specifically for the negative this time, but I appreciate the comparitively thunderous uproar of positive attitudes. To the minority among us whose sensibilities have been offended, please believe me when I say that I love all animals, Humans included. This thread was sparked by something in my email, to which only the sender and I are privy. I will not reveal the comments, other than to say they were very broad, sweeping generalizations regarding me personally, and I thought a public consensus would be good for that person to read. You have all helped me in my endeavor, and I welcome everyone to challenge my statements, correct both my grammar and diction, as well as interject your opinions, but PLEASE DO NOT PLAY THE RACE CARD because I am holding the whole deck in one hand. This has been a public service announcement. |
