I got a new set of pilot powers for my bike and I didn't want another "this harley dealer scratched the F**K out of my rims" story. So what did I do? Had the tires shipped directly to Hammer71's house and rode over there then watched him yell at the old tires till they jumped off the rims and hid. seriously though, THANKS HAMMER! for the tireswap help. For you guys that don't know him already be sure to take a ride with him, mad cool. (damnit, I really wanted to photoshop the pic of him yelling at the girl and make it so he was yelling at a tire/rim to break the bead, but he changed his profile pic, hehe) |

I take my stuff to the Ducati/Aprilla dealer for tire changes and inspection. Great service, and cool people. No yelling involved. I would die laughing at a p-shop of that! Tank |

reminds me that i should rant a little just had my tires swapped last wknd. before the HD tech took the bike in i said i didn't want to see the rims come back scratched, nicked, gouged... nothing! black wheels. he's like 'yeah, these scratch easy'... has to actually WRITE DOWN on the service sheet 'Please do not scratch'. WTF is that about? so i waited... for 4 HOURS while they changed the tires. no idea why it took 2hrs per wheel. just nuts. i was second in line for service. soooo, bike is finally done... go inspect the wheels. TWO NICKS on front rim. went back to the kid who took it in, said 'i told you i didn't want any scratches, i have two nicks.' ... 'no way! i told him to duct tape the rims in two layers!' (?) service manager took off labor for front rim ($68). they're small enough that i just wanted to get out of there but WTF, he tells me they cant help it because the machine has metal parts gripping wheel. are only HD tire machines this evil on wheels?? surely all those faancy Harley guys dont want nicked wheels either. i never had trouble at the Honda shop with black wheels. i would have taken just the wheels in but my damn axle was seized. tried everything, broke my wrench too, but couldnt get it off. should be able to take the rims somewhere else next time... like a Duc shop. lame. the shop i used last time to change my tires has a "touchless tire changer". they gave me back my rims/tires in nicer shape than when i dropped them off. they were polished and looking really nice. it also did cost me 70.00 with the wheels off, but worth it to me as there were no head aches other than the weights on the wrong side. |

must have some sort of plastic or protective cover on the arms that hold the wheel. (?) Firebolteric_ma, care to post or PM the shop? i'm not going back to Auburn for a tire change again. |

I was unable to see the machine they used in there shop. It was the sign on the building that stated "touchless tire removal" that made me decide on this small chopper style motorcycle company. there machine also went up to a 300 or a 330 tire for the "touchless" removal. |

wrong side... that's good to start the day with a chuckle. My suggestion, having been through damaged wheels, unsatisfactory replacements, and finally having them polished, is this: Find a shop that does tires only. They generally have the best prices and you can usually be right there watching them and talking to them. For those in Southern California, I recommend Wheel Works in Stanton. Tires, wheels, brakes ONLY. |

my 2 cents worth I use 2 short pices of 2X4(18 inch) long with a all thread bolt through them it is placed at the rim and want scrach them and just squeze them tgether they will just pop right off no damage to rim at all. |

Blake, car rims? nooooooooooo... It was the buell rims. They did re-ballance the wheels for me and put the weights on the correct side for NO cost after I pointed it out to them the next day. They too laughed, and commented they were unsure.(should have asked) cowboy..got a picture of that??? |

I recently bought a No-Mar tire changer and am really happy with it. It's a considerable chunk of change to lay out, and there is space and storage to consider as well. That said - having never changed tires before I can R&R a tire in about 15 minutes taking my sweet time - with a minimum of cursing -, and if I pay attention this machine truly will not scratch the rims. I justified the $$ outlay when I tallied up the cost of labor in NYC and the fact that I have no way of transporting rims and tires and would have to ride the bike to the shop and have them R&R the wheels as well. I figured 4 sets of tires and I will have paid for the machine - 2 sets done already. As an added bonus I had the opportunity to balance the rims without tires and find and mark the *real* heaviest spot on each wheel. Result; cut the weight necessary for final balancing in half. Bomber:} its done with a 2x4 with the end stuck under the tire of a car (its has to be a gold maxima). you then stand, jump, curse on the 2x4 until the bead breaks, its actually pretty easy. then tire irons with lil pieces of garden hose cut up and split to use as guards on the wheel to pry the tire off. putting the new tire on is pretty much the same in reverse. I saw a website with some funny pics of a guy doing it a similar way, I can't find it right now. |

oohhhhhhhh i got ya! i did that for breaking the beads on my truck tires.(1 ton dually) i used the 4x4 and while it was jacked up i would lower the truck w/ the 4x4 on the edge of the tire down to break the bead. then use the tire irons w/ the little nub on them for the rest of the removal. kinda a pain and alot of work but worth it to save the cash the garages charge. only had to get them balanced after that. |

What he said... Only pain in the a$$ is the rear tire mounting as the pressure you put on the tire and wheel comes real close to scratching the rim. As for balancing I use a static balancer, never had any issue with it. Have seen that no-mar setup and like it alot but the price and limitations of room...... |

Jon; I went for the "Classic" with a full package. I already had a balancer, so I had them swap their balancer out for a set of their No-Mar spoons. I'd been wondering if the Pro-Jr was the way to go, but the Classic is fine for the type and size of wheels I'll be doing. Besides, the overhead arm is actually easier to work with on the Classic. Good people to deal with. There were a few issues with the stuff when I got it, but they took care of everything, no discussion. Henrik |
