which 2nd bike to get. Riding a friends Aprilia RSVR got me to thinking I need a more sporty bike for weekend twisty attacks and trackdays. So I have been debating between a 2002 RSV Mille R, a 2002 RC51 or a 2003 999 Mono. I have ridden all three, the priller is decievingly easy to ride, the Duc keeps calling me a wimp and the Honda is kinda like the Buell in that to get the most out of it you have to move around quite a bit but is the most civilized of the bunch. One little plus to the Honda is mirrors that show me more than my elbows. Maintenance wise I think the Honda wins because well it's a Honda, the Aprilia is supposed to be hondalike as far as service intervals but I have heard parts availibity is iffy right now, and the duc is a duc and is going to require some special tools and an assortment of shims so I can do the valve adjustments and t belts they eat at 6K intervals. All of them have more power than I really need but if I'm gonna buy another bike I think it should have more go fast than the Buell just because. Pricewise they are all within about 1500.00 of each other with the RC at one end and the 999 at the other. I like the Buell and plan on keeping it but want something more suited to trackdays and to expand the stable. | ||

I really liked those RC51's. never had it-or any bike for that matter, on a track tho, but was certainly fun to ride, as are just about every race type honda I've been on. I like the way it sounds too, is it a chaindriven cam? but I couldn't compare it to the others as I only sat on those two...Couldn't fathom blowing a 1/3 of my salary on a sportbike, thus never rode em... | ||

Ceejay the cams are geardrive like the old intercepters. They are all used bikes so they are only 1/5 of my salary and what else is money for but to get the occasional goodie. | ||

Ah-that explains that high pitched whine on the RC's. I love the way those bikes sound. Yeah I'm looking for another ride but I'll probably get a 9r, keep the M1 for modding...looks as if you keeping with the twins-certain class or just like 'em better? | ||

RSV-R or the Duc. Better yet, a race prepped/upgraded XB9R with the big bore kit. | ||

Duc keeps calling me a wimp its crazy, isnt it? i've always backed off before the bike ran out of power on my duc. and the harder you ride the darn thing, the better it responds. its a beautiful thing to have fear and respect for a machine. D | ||

CJ I just can't warm up to inline 4s. I've had a couple older ones and rented a newer one in California this summer and they just don't make me grin like a big torquey V twin does. Blake I have thought of the XB9 big bore too but I think I want this bike to rev higher. Don't ask me to justify that dude 'cause I probably can't. Sex appeal wise the Italians win hands down with the 999 edging out the RSV-R by a nose. The Honda was the torque monster and had the wickedest sound. The 2 into 1 Jardine is evil. The RSV was second and the duc had stock pipes. All three of them are stable and planted at speeds where the X1 is starting to wriggle around and get a bit squirrely. Buellgirlie truthfully I didn't reach any of the threes limits or even come close, but the duc made it really plain that it wanted to be ridden at 9/10s or it was gonna complain and harass me. My racecar was like that too until you were pretty close to the edges it just didn't want to work. The RSV-R and the 51 just said we can wait. I really wanted to ride my favorite roads near my house but I figured a four hour test ride might be pushing it some. I found a couple entertaining cloverleafs but there was too much traffic too really play. | ||

I like Desmo. I like Ducati motorcycles a lot. Go for the track bling. Plus you can always excuse being passed on conservatism for fear of replacement parts costs. And NOTHING short of a built Buell sounds better than a Duc racin'. Sumpin' not right with your X1's chassis setup if it is getting wriggly and squirelly. | ||

Blake, I likey desmo too and I love the way my wifes 900SS sounds almost as much as my bike. I think my bikes squirrelyness is because I need a bit more spring for my weight, 215 to 220 with gear. I can't decide between that cool Hyperco or a Penske, I know Traxxion Dynamics is getting my money for the forks. Most of this wondering about another bike is because mine is broke right now and I'm annoyed I haven't beeen able to ride for the last week. I'm pretty certain the tightwad in me is going to hotrod the X1 some and try to get it to the 110hp mark and tune the suspension a bit instead of spending 7 to 10 grand on another bike. It is fun to think about though. | ||

Sounds like a fun plan Crash. Consider the Works shock? Corey, Isn't the best sounding bike almost always the one that one is riding?  Seriously though, I don't know of any twin cylinder motorcycle that doesn't sound wonderful with a proper exhaust. | ||

The three main people I ride with have a RC51, Mille R and a 998. I've ridden the 998 and the RC51 (maybe an hour each). Both have very crazy and opposite positions. You sit real low and stretched out on the Duc, and super high on the RC51. The Duc felt much better in the corners and the engine is amazing. The Honda engine is nice but not as nice. I disagree on the sound however, the Ape wins by a long shot. I almost always ride behind him just for the sound. At stop lights the exhaust is aimed directly at my helmet (stinks of course but sounds great). I would love to give it a shakedown. The Aprilia also my favorite for looks. The Carbon fiber, the integrated lights out back. Nice. | ||

Whats wrong with the Buell for a track bike? I and my son run an X1 at NHIS in the LRRS race searies. There's no issues with handling or braking. We run a Penske shock out back an a sport bike stearing stablizer, as for brakes all factory stock. The bike rolls on Michelin Pilot Race rubber. Other than that all its got is the usual street mods,ie C/F oval(K&N)intake, Supper Trapp (soon to be replaced)exaust, and the Buell race ECM. So far its been great no issues except that the rear cyl base gasket weep is now more of a leak. Ok, so were not the fastest out there, but I bet we are having just as much fun as anyone else is. I've heared it said, its more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow? | ||

Folks, it is my not so humble opinion that it is best to have multiple bikes. At this point I have a disgusting desire for a second bike. I'd like to take the wife on day trips and my Lightning will never be used for that. I did have my fathers BMW R1150r in the garage for about a week and the thought of which bike to ride during suit up is quite addictive. Like Pwnzor I've been waiting for a certain S3T to be traded in locally. I've always wanted a GS BMW too. I've got this little shrub out front that no matter how much fertilizer I give it, it refuses to grow $100 bills. I got it to spit nickels one season but I blew all that on Bazooka Joe.  NUTS | ||

Blake very true...just seems when I'm standing there, either literally or figuritively as I'm getting passed by one, that exhaust note sounds way cool. I'll never get one unless I feel the need for four bikes M2, XB, kawi chopper, then an RC. Seeing as how I only have one so far, I'll just admire from afar, and see if I can start passing em, so they can hear what a buell with a wileyco sounds like... | ||

Dapope, It's the mechanical noises as well as the exhaust that get me all excited. The clutch rattle on the Duc and the gear whine of the RC51, the Ape (that's so wrong for a nickname, they aren't apelike at all) just has the exhaust there isn't any counterpoint under it to accentuate the point this bike is all business. Looks wise the Honda loses to both the Italians and the Buell. For me the Duc just edges out tha RSV looks wise. Danny, Nothing mostly but I think it would be the most fun to ride a fast bike fast. I'm already passing the crappy riders and not losing too much time to the fast guys I can keep them in sight (sort of, they have almost a 1/2 mile lead by the end) through a 20 minute session but they DO pull away and there isn't really anything I can do about it because I'm getting killed on the straights, the Buell can't keep up because it gives up too much in HP and RPM. Basically I want more top end for the day I go to a trackday at BIR with it's ridiculously long front straight and an insane fast turn 1. | ||

So I decided. I'd rather dump the money for a second bike into the Buell. I won a couple of ebay auctions. Got a race header and a pr of Revolution stage 2 (whatever that means) heads and am picking up a Penske or Hyperco shock next after my checkbook heals. Anybody know anything about the Hypercos? |
