Hey guys, first off let me introduce myself as a new member of the Forums. My name is Tom Hutson and I am 20 years old and I live in Concord, CA. My interest in bikes has been nearly lifelong. I started getting into musclecars when I was 16 and built a pretty hot 68 mustang with a 351 windsor and a 5 spd. I am in the position now that I would really like to start riding. This will not be the first time I have ridden but will be my first bike. I am looking at the buell xb12r firebolt or maybe the lightning xb12. I know people that have purchased bikes from craigslist and thought they had good deals to find out that their bikes are messed up. i decided to go the dealership route for peace of mind at the fact that the bikes are thouroughly gone through and warrantied in some cases. I will have approximately 3-4 thousand dolalrs to spend as a downpayment on a used bike at the dealership as soon as I am ready to buy. My question is if any of you have been in my position before. how difficult was it for you to get financing on the rest of the cost. my credit i believe is good. I have never missed a payment on anything and pay regularly on my credit card. I was just wondering if anyone can speak to me from experience. Another dillema I have is my parents. I currently daily drive my mustang and get single digit gas mileage which is part of my reason justifying purchasing a cycle. But anyways, it was nice introducing myself and youll see me around. Also any bay area riders around here?

Later,
Tom

Hi Tom:

1st, Purchase the proper gear for riding. A good FC helmet, gloves, jacket, etc....
(this includes rain gear too!)
These are as important as the sled it self,
one of our members coined this phrase
"Its better to sweat than bleed"
Take a rider safety course, this will help ease your folks mind too.

2nd The new to you Buell will likely get in excess of 45mpg. My X1 gets 46 ~ 48 on my 40 miles of daily commute.
its a good thing

3rd, before purchase check on insurance rates you may be in for a shock

4th, spend some time in the xb area,
inquire about "good dealers" in your area

If you like "old school" a tube frame Buell is a nice ride, more upkeep is required though, S1 S2 M2, S3, or X1( my favorite ) These can be had for little more than the down payment, you are accumulating

you do muscle cars I assume that you wrench, you can save major money
DIY, as I stated earlier, the older bikes require more upkeep but well worth it
the S3 and X1 '00 and later were pretty well sorted.

Welcome to the board, post when you got'er

from the porch Ol-Dog ....
