I'm not a valley guy, so I couldn't tell you for sure. If they change their tune a bit and want to be closer to the beach and a bit south, maybe save a few bucks in the process let me know. I can point to a lot of good areas around the south bay curve. |

Hey Jim, i lived out there for 12 years and owned a property management company on the west side until 2003. i would look at Studio city versus N hollywood and preferably go over to the west side Santa Monica or Culver City both will be more expensive but much nicer and safer than north hollywood IMHO. i lived in the Valley the first 4 years and its much hotter and many more bad elements because of the lower rents. If you have to go the valley route like i said Studio city, Glendale, or Pasadena are all good choices. If i wasnt in the middle of such a nasty divorce i would call my ex for some contacts for you. There is a lot of development going on in NoHo, so there are some nicer parts. I'd stay out of Panarama City, Sun Valley, Van Nuys. Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Toluca Lake, Burbank, Glendale are nice parts. West LA gets pretty expensive for rent. I live in Van Nuys and it is a little sketchy but rents cheap, have my own garage, and it's quite. |

Like Pwnzor, I know the South Bay area. I'm in torrance, which still has some good deals for rent, and parking is usually good, but...and this can be big, some of the best areas are the furthest from the freeway. (20 minutes on a good day) Also, if you are looking in Torrance, be sure it is "Torrance" and not "Torrance P.O." because the latter is really LA, the "Harbor Gateway," and while not the worst place to live, being run by LA, it is generally more run down than the surrounding cities. |

Where's he going to be going to school? Traffic is a MAJOR factor here in LA ( I just drove about 28 miles from a job site in Sherman Oaks to my house on La Canada, and it took almost 1 1/2 hours! - jeez!) He's going to want to be pretty close by the school, or at least within a short drive. AL |

hey Microchop I used to live down on Calle Miramar, near PCH and PV Drive North. Great times down on Torrance beach after hours. Full moon, white sand, a blanket and two young people playing checkers. |

Studio City, Valley Village other places generally south & SE of the colleges will be OK. North and west can get a little 'dicey' but the rent will be lower that direction. Since he's a colege student, he won't have anything worth stealing, nor any cash on him, so 'if ya got nuthin - ya got nuthin' to lose'. Sun Valley is where the burglers live, and Pacoima is an old Native American word that loosely translates to "we're taking your stereo". AL |

Al- You been listening to Chief Thunder Bear at all? FMJ- Maybe we can hook up for eats or a drink or something. Send me a PM if interested. On a totally tangential note, I used to be in a band where our drummers were all Jims. One was a fireman. I wonder how he's doing now. -Saro |

I think my brother in law is going to that same X-Ray tech school. Whatevere you do, do not REPEAT do not move to Van Nuys. I live theri now and am looking to move back to Encino. The valley is cool activity wise, and Burbank has a lot to do but just dont look at Van Nuys. Here my theory...If the Hispanic (to be politically correct) ice cream guy is pushing his cart down the street, or if the nach truck rolls by your house at 9:30 at night you do not want to live there. Good Cities in the SFV include: Northridge, Tarzana, Encino, Burbank, Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Toluca Lake, Woodland Hills, Porter Ranch, Calabasas. These should give you a good start. |

OK,back from whirlwind excursion to LA,drove 7 hours each way.Met counselor,James passed the required entrance exam no sweat. Now really need to find a 2 BR apartment near his schools.Gonna check apartments.com but if anyone knows a realtor in the area it would cut the shopping time down. We did hit Santa Monica pier up for lunch.Nice place but damn, they have more bums than San Fran. |

My bike should be back together soon, maybe we can get together and ride sometime. I always like to end back at my house with BBQ. |
