HippyJoe,
Your offer to watch him for us a few days did not go un-noticed.
I appreciate the offer and we may need to take you up on it.
Without knowing how he would react to the sidecar ride I think it best we have Buell NM do the transporting. I hope you understand.
I, on the other hand, would love a ride in your sidecar someday!
For a few years in a row I drove the sidecar rig for the kids at the MDA camps VIP day. I am pretty sure I had more fun than the kids!
I'll never forget the look of shear terror on the faces of the camp leaders as I went by them, sidecar and passenger about 5 feet off the ground at about 40 MPH.
Almost got kicked out for life til they saw how much the kids enjoyed the way I gave the sidecar rides. Big fun.

Sure thing Dave, I understand... if Kim needs to drop him off here I can keep him until the trip to Denver is ready, I'm on an acre with a dog park out back. We can take small steps in the hack to see what he thinks. It's set up for "dog only" right now with the seat out and a big furry sheepskin on the floor, doggy door, treats and a bowl of water. You're welcome to check it out as well. : )

It sounds like he's in good hands for the moment in Taos, that's a relief.

Dave:

It's looking like we have the following legs covered.

  • TAOS to DENVER
  • DENVER to KANSAS CITY

Close.....we are very close. Just a matter of coordinating a couple schedules and the pickup.

We can do this.

Final leg of the journey - introducing him to the household:

You probably know this already so humor me, but just in case....

Introduce the new fellow to the existing housemembers away from the house, like down the street at a park or vacant lot or grocery store parking lot. Keeps the territorialism to a minimum. Then just sort of walk everyone back home. The existing members of the household, assuming they all get along in neutral territory, will not see this as a direct invasion of their territory. Instead it will seem like a new neighbor coming to play. By the time they realize he's staying he'll already be part of the household.

OK, here's todays update
I am trying to fax the paperwork in to the shelter. It has not gone thru yet but I will continue trying.
If I can get the paperwork to them and they approve us as parents then this weekend would work.

Buell NM, can you go get him on Friday or Sat and take him to Colorado Springs to meet up with THansesXB9rs on Sat?

Daves,

If they have some office type procedural issue with adopting him out inter-state then just have one of the folks picking him up adopt him out. I had to do this once when I helped out at an animal shelter in California, had to adopt the Norweigian Elkhound out in my name, then delivered the hound to her new family 450 miles away.

I just started reading this thread so sorry for the delayed response.

I would be willing to drive half of a KC to Waterloo leg.

That's wonderful news!!

All the good you've done for everyone on this board is coming back to you (and Kandie!!) as it should be. Makes me smile, I know you and Kandie must be thrilled that this is coming together.

Does Taos have internet access yet? I'd like to know his thoughts on all this.

Excellent advice Mike. : ) As usual. : )

Yes we are!
I wish there was a way we could tell Taos he is coming to Iowa.
I think he'd be pretty happy about that too.

I truly believe that animals know when they are safe and with people who will take good care of them. Unfortunately not all animals have that comfort in life.

I'm sure he'll be a little confused as he is passed from person to person and living in a car/truck for a few days, but will know he's home when he sees both you and Kandie again.

Good things happen to good people.

+1 for The Captain! I, too, wish I could get involved.

Dave,

I obviously can't help with the rescue so I want to buy him a big honking bag of his favorite dog food. Send me the bill or something,,,,I know you don't use PayPal so I'll send it via USMail.

Thanks Bigdaddy, I think he prefers steaks and he is a big dog so I'll just get about 50 lbs and send you the bill

Update,
Kandie got in touch with Paul, the animal control officer and got a different fax number for me to send the paperwork to. He is going to hand deliver it to the shelter for us. What a great guy he has been. He needs a raise!

Kandie will be calling them as soon as they open at 12:00(1:00 our time) to make sure they have the paperwork and that we can be approved as parents.

I talked to Buell NM this morning and she is all set to pick him up either tomorrow afternoon or Sat morning and take him to Colorado Springs to meet up with Tim from KC. If she has to pick him up Friday Taos will get to spend the night with HippyJoe.

As long as the shelter can expedite our approval the "Taos' big adventure" should be a go for this weekend.

Here's Buck, one of Taos new brothers

And Jake

Barney, our other dog didn't make the photo shoot.

Just talked to Mary Sue at Stray Hearts Animal Shelter. It is OK for Kimberly to pick Taos up on Saturday between 12-4pm as long as we are approved as parents. I need to call her back tomorrow to see if we are approved and pay for him.
I'm going now to get him a new collar and a tag with his new name, address and phone #, and make an appointment with our vet for a check up and a bath!
Badwebbers are the BEST!! Thanks everyone for helping with this!

Kimberly the address is
1200 St. Francis Lane
(off Salazar Rd. behind the DMV & Dept. of Labor

Ok, we got 2 collars, ID tag, vet appt and a bath appt. Jake thought we should welcome him with his favorite treat so we got some fudge striped cookies.

Larry I still think you're a hot skinny white boy, but you look better in a dress than a fur coat!

Lowflyer for such a mean man you have a very pretty dog. Nate's pic should replace your terrible profile pic!
