As some of you know, our annual road trip took us thru Taos NM. While there we found a stray dog and turned him over to the animal shelter(after he stayed the night with us in the hotel room). Well no one has turned up to claim him, which the officer told us would probably be the case. We have decided to try to adopt him and bring him to live with us in Iowa. Here's the favor I may need. Someone that would be willing to go to Taos and get him from the shelter and take him to the airport in Albuquerque. We are still working out the details as to when and how soon we can get the paperwork cleared. Plan B would be if anyone is headed this direction in a vehicle with room for a dog that we could meet up with somewhere along their way and pick up the dog from them? Here he is

Uh, Dave, do you know what a wolf is? And what they look like? I'm thinking if you had a pleasant night with him in the motel, he must have eaten just before you found him. Jack P.S. - I'm joking of course, it is a noble thing you do! |

Hey Dave how far is Taos from the Durango Pagosa Springs area? Not sure yet but I may be headed that way in the next few weeks and could bring him back with me to KC, that would give you and Kandie another reason to come see us. I'll keep you posted since I am not 100% sure I'll be going yet or if I'll be taking the bike. (Message edited by thansesxb9rs on August 07, 2006) |

If anyone can get the pooch from Taos to Denver I can get him east on I-70. I am leaving for Maine on Wednesday night and will be stopping in Bloomington, Indiana Thursday night. Don Casto Boulder, Colorado |

Whoever does it should snap a few pics of the pooch and driver at the pickup, on the road, and at the happy arrival. Chronicle the adventures of the animal rescued from afar by a man on vacation who takes the time to care for a lost soul.

Tim, It's probably about 140 miles from Pagosa Springs to Taos. Getting him to KC would be great, that's a short one day round trip for us. Don, If Tim can't get him we could meet you on I70 somewhere in Mo to pick him up. By the way everyone, this was not all my idea, it's really Kandie's fault Thanks to all of you that have offered to try and help so far. Court is right, we can do this. I think the picture idea is great, be Taos' great adventure(that's his new name) |

Dave see what you guys can do, if I do end up going to Pagosa Springs it will not be until the 19th. It would be cool if someone could get the pouch to Denver on Wednesday. Come on Bartimus where are you at? |

Daves, I've got an XL Verikennel type crate to loan if you do end up air-shipping him. I've helped a bunch in dog rescues in the past. I'll follow this thread if I can, or ping me if you need the crate. |

Sorry that I can't help--I'm in Canada--but this thread is helping portray the BADWeb to my wife in a positive light! Go, Daves! We have two dogs, both rescues...a dinner guest last night said she wants to be reincarnated as one of our pets... |

I live in Santa Fe. If he'll ride in a sidecar I could pick him up in Taos. I don't have a car. As long as he gets along with my dog I could keep him until you're ready to get him from ABQ. I can deliver him to the ABQ Sunport, Amtrak station, etc, once you're ready for him. |

I'm in Santa Fe, I can go get him and take him to the airport. I just can't keep him at my place. So if some here hangs on to him I'll transport him. |

If he's gonna fly, he'll need a health certificate from a vet that is current. I'll pick up the tab for the check-up. |

Yesterday I called American Airlines, they can't do it because of the heat. Continental Airlines out of ABQ might be able to. I called their Pet Safe/Quick pak cargo line. The problem is getting him to the airport and having the proper kennel and food and water. The food and water bowls have to be attached to the side of the kennel. There also has to be an absorbent liner on the bottom of the kennel. The guy told me they can't open the kennel door once he is checked in. They fly to Omaha, Chicago and Minneapolis. If the dog and kennel weigh 71-100# it's $299. If they both weigh 101-250# it's $350 plus a security and a jet fuel charge. I think he said around 23 cents a pound. The cost is the same no matter what day of the week. The vet from the shelter would need to sign a health certificate within 10 days of his flight. I have called the animal control officer everyday to see if he is still there. No one has claimed him. The officer said people don't want to pay the fee to get their dogs out. The shelter has him quarantined for 10 days then he will be up for adoption. Tomorrow will be 1 week. |

Is the Taos shelter no-kill? Cause here in S.Fe they will kill dogs for a variety of reasons, even if they say otherwise when you turn one in. The strays I've picked up in NM I've either held until I got ahold of the owner, or else shuttled up to Boulder, they had a no-kill shelter up there. I don't trust the shelters in S.Fe county, they get docs fresh from Texas where life seems to be a pretty cheap commodity. No insult intended to any Texans on the board I'm sure. Anyway ask me how I know.... Taos might be different, I've never been to their shelter. I do know there are a lot of Texans there. Again, present company excluded of course. There is a loose network nationwide of animal rescue volunteers, they shuttle dogs to new parents all the time. I'll look into if there are any here in northern NM. As some here have offered it might better to have folks from the board shuttle him your way. If it turns out Taos isn't no-kill I can keep him until transpo gets figured out. |

The animal control officer, Paul Martinez told me they are a no-kill shelter. He said they do send some dogs to Colorado if they aren't adopted but he didn't know how much time they were given. I had a lot of questions for him yesterday and he said he would get some answers. The lady I talked to from the shelter last Thursday acted like she didn't want to be bothered. She wouldn't even tell me if the dog was still there. Paul said the shelter is very unorganized so I just keep calling him. |

Kandie: Keep in touch with Paul. Get the name of a local vet who will board, in the event we DO NEED to get him out on the 15th and we can't get one our our Elves to pick him up for a day or two. I'm thinking we can arrange a "101 Dalmations" type relay....heck, Taos to Iowa is only a one-day motorcycle ride. This program needs "Legs". It appears the first one will be from Taos to Denver. I'm up for putting up gas money and I'll provide whomever does that leg with a spiffy and somewhat RARE autographed by Erik Buell t-shirt. Let's get this dog safely home. Who's doing Taas to Denver. Wait! Don't go anywhere....I'm gonna be looking for Denver to Kansas City next. Anybody in KC who helps, I'll by dinner at the Free State Brewery on Friday September 1st. |

Offer: I'll go down the road and get a kennel for him, go to Taos and get him. I know a number of good vets in the area, so I can arrange for the vet cert. The only thing I need to know after that is where to take him. I have the weekends off so I could take him to Denver from there. Just set up who I'd meet up with and when. |

Sounds like leg #1 of this journey is in place. Who's up for leg #2??? I think this is BadWebber's at their finest, a group of good hearted people for one common goal. Gotta love it. Of course, you know we'll all want to see pictures of Taos once he's home! |

Update, I have the paperwork for Taos and will be faxing it back tomorrow morning. Buell NM, thank you so much for your generous offer to help us save Taos! We are trying to find out how long they will hold him for us to give us more time to arrange the next legs of his journey home. Part of my problem is I am out of vacation time for the year so the closer we can get Taos to Iowa the better. If I had the time I'd just drive back to NM and get him myself but as it is I would only have Sat night, starting another 300 miles from home, the wrong direction, thru Monday night so I can be back at work on Tuesday morning. Denver is about 12-13 hours from Waterloo Iowa so I could do that in the time frame I have. Closer would be better. We will know more tomorrow. Kandie talked to a nice lady at the shelter that said she wants to see us get him! That should help a lot, having an insider on our side. Is there anyone that could pick him up from Buell NM in the Denver area and bring him to Nebraska? I know this is a lot to ask and I hate to be beholding to anyone but we both really want to save Taos from his uncertain future and provide him the good home every dog deserves. Just look at that face, how could we resist? Thanks to all that have offered to help so far! |
