Oh and Bruce, I not only took a logic course I took a symbolic logic course. You won't get emotion out of me in an argument. Just simple logic.

"You are making assumptions regarding my ethics as a conservationist without knowing me at all. I promise that I live a lower impact life than most people. In fact I barely come up with one bag of trash a week. Not one can of trash, one bag of trash.

I buy nothing I do not need and look at my one or two romps a week on the bike as something I should (but can not) do without.

I am not the perfect conservationist but I try."

How nice for you. I don't care a whits end whether you are a "conservationist."

That is your call, not mine. It is your sanctimonious attitude that gets you in trouble. You actually feel superior to the SUV owner and allows all that "contempt" for the masses.

Go have dinner with a tree!

Does that work in "symbolic logic" terms?

I've a suggestion for the community at large (I know, I shoulda stopped checkin this thread long ago -- guilty pleasure, I spose -- I also argue with the Watchtower ladies on the front porch)

when I judge people with little data, I'm almost always wrong -- your milage may vary, of course --

my suggestion is, assume that most on the board are good folks, and do what they do for a good reason -- give it a shot -- you might make a news friend or three

"Next time your at Wal-Mart drive by the employee parking. I did this once when we were talking about MPG on this board. 90% of the cars driven to WalMart were less than 25mpg. So justiyfy that?"
could this be that Wally World is trying to get into the E85 game?
Or is it that they aren't getting paid as poorly as people thought?
Electric cars make me laugh-where do you think the energy comes from to power them up? There aren't any nuclear powerplants going up, the same people that bitch about gas guzzling SUV's are also blocking the use of windpower, most rivers that could be damned already are, and solar hasn't provided enough benifits yet. Those that complain about govt. involvment and we need to use more electric cars seem to believe that electricity comes from static, while it would be nice I haven't seen anyone harness it yet.
Biodesiel is great-why is it only offered in 80-20 petro-bio? Not enough studies for the EPA to sign off-well why not? No-one will give the money-well why not?

Too busy pointing the finger at everyone else, so we go out and buy a new car and spend less on gas and more on car payment/insurance, and someone else is doing the same with the five yr old car that you got rid of and now their ten yr. old car sits waiting for the scrap heap, to which we need more fuel to burn to turn it into a lamp for the guy to buy for his wife cause that is all he can afford to get her due to high insurance costs and that the lamp cost 120 bucks to make because there is a shortage of raw materials for lamps becuase everyone is buying new cars to save on fuel costs....
Ride a bicycle-you'll lose weight, feel better, eat less, have more energy, and will be even less of a burden on society.
Or just enjoy life and quite worrying about it as most people do cause we only have one go around...

Brucelee you said

"You actually feel superior to the SUV owner and allows all that "contempt" for the masses".

Not entirely true. I do feel smarter than an SUV owner that commutes alone in a SUV or giant truck.

I feel not a single bit superior or smarter than someone with 5 kids running errands in a SUV. Or someone towing something.

I have issues with rampant consumerism and waste. In your eyes this make me some kind of weirdo that should be out hugging trees.

I am not here to tell people what to or how to live thier lives. I can not change one single thing about the habits of most Americans.

I will however reserve the right to think that a majority of Americans are wasteful, selfish consumers that are way to interested in the perceptions of others and their own personal comfort.

I am interested in my own personal comfort and I dare say most of us are, however we define that. So are you, you are comfortable feeling vastly smug and self-righteous.

Acting like you are above it all simply labels you as a fraud.

I don't feel superior either, but I surely feel sorry for them...5 kids, JEEFUS!

Having so many children, wouldn't that be wasteful? Unless, of course, you have a farm to run.

"I do feel smarter than an SUV owner that commutes alone in a SUV or giant truck."

I really get a kick out of 700 miles per tank of fuel. 45mpg. I use the money saved on fuel cost to buy go-faster parts. So net savings is some car parts or gym supplements.

"I am interested in my own personal comfort and I dare say most of us are, however we define that. So are you, you are comfortable feeling vastly smug and self-righteous. "

Ask not what your country can do for you but what YOU can do for your country.

Thanks Blake,

Funny thing about the internet, No matter how hard you try you can not avoid people with different opinions.

I do not to get upset when someone does not share my opinions. I do like to talk about the differences though. It is the only way to learn and perhaps even form new opinions.

IMHO the only way to evolve as a person is to try to understand why other people have the opinions they do.

One of my best friends is a Card Carrying Pro Choice, Pro war, SUV driving, born again Republican. We have the best discussions!

Somehow despite our differences we manage to have a mutual respect for how each other. Mostly this is due to how each of us lives thier lives true to Friends, Family and Principals.

Bruclee, I can agree to disagree about anything except Kiddie Porn and Wife Beating.

You mean "pro-life"?

Richard,
Suggest you try the following when presented with an opinion with which you strongly disagree:

State simply and politely/respectfuly that "I cannot disagree more strongly with your opinion that (insert applicable opinion here in quotes); my view is that (insert your opposing opinion here).

Then let it go or continue on in similar fashion concerning ongoing or ancillary points.

There simply is no need to engage in personal attacks out of a difference in opinion. Frankly, your manner of debate resembles much the very attributes of big government that you so abhor, you wish to impose your own views upon others with whom you disagree.

No one is demanding that concurrence with other's/others' opinion(s). Just that we please refrain from waging personal attacks please.

Skyguy I agree, I have to drive a pickup truck everyday to carry tools to work and when I can I take the car or bike I do. I dont understand why my neighbor drives his 2500 quadcab every where every day never hauling or carrying anything other than him, no kids etc. Just because someone can afford to burn way more fuel than needed doesnt mean they should, its their money but the fuel consumption has a negative effect on the whole world. Its really a form of greed. Some guys NEED to drive a big truck to feel secure. But whatever its his choice, and Im sure it may be different in the future when fuel prices hit new highs.

...fuel consumption has a negative effect on the whole world.

Burn all the damn gas you want!
IMO, the sooner we run out of oil, the sooner we find an alternative.

Oil producing countries in the Middle East could cause a catastrophic disruption to our economy and daily lives in a heart beat with an embargo. Cellulostic Ethanol has promise, and a home grown solution would not require putting our Military in harm's way to secure it.

I would also like to see Hydrogen pursued as a fuel source. We have lots of ocean front in this country, prop up some Wind and Solar farms and use the 'free' non-poluting electricity to separate Hydrogen from Oxygen. An MIT graduate has recently patented a device to create electricity from the motion of ocean waves, too. Creating Hydrogen releases O2 (not a greenhouse gas) and burning hydrogen creates water as a by-product. Hydrogen is the most plentiful element in the universe, it will take a damn long time to run out of it.

FreeFlyer is correct. But the problem is both political parties are spinless. They both are controlled by MONEY. And the fact that we, the same people who spend 300 BILLION to get another country to vote. Will not take the time to vote in our own system.
