I read past threads about camera's here and was always hating my lil old camera. Craig aka 99buellx1 bought a Canon XT 350D and I had to have one,one day. Well I got one yesterday. Haven't had time to play with it yet really. Need to learn more about it.... I'm a newbie but want to learn. Craig you gave me the camera bug. Some of the pictures I've seen you take are awesome. The detail is really great. Is it that good out of the box or have you changed things??? Whats everyone else use???

Actually Dana,
I wanted to get the XT, but found a deal on a 20D so I ponied up a bit extra for it.
You are gonna love it.

Really, these cameras are so good that they can take great pictures right out of the box. The most important part of that camera is the lens. What lens do you have? Kit lens?
I use Photoshop CS2 for post processing, and in all reality I do not know much about Photoshop, but just enough to help the photos around a bit. If you have Photoshop open a picture and push crtl-shift-L

This site has some good lens reviews and some good tips:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com

I dont know how camera terminology savvy you are but this glossary of terms could help:
http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/glossary/terms_a.htm

This is a photography forum that is very active. And it has a great classified section: (some amazing photos get posted)

I used to be into photography bigtime. I probably have more money into camera gear then bike gear (including the bike). I use a Nikon F5 and a N90S. I still shoot film, mostly slide film. I would like to get back into it. Subject matter is what fuels my passion. I think that I would like to shoot some track photos, and bike art.

It could have been better, needed a higher shutter speed, but that's learning.
Which is the best part of the digital SLR camera, you get near instant feedback on what settings worked, and what didn't.

I am still a definate rookie at this photography deal, I get a few shots that turn out nice, but nothing spectacular.

I wish I would have had more time while I was in Vegas!

I use a Sony Mavica digital that burns the pics onto the mini cdr/cdrw discs. Model #MVC-CD400.

It's only 4 megapixels, up to 2272x1704
3x optical, and 6x digital zoom
Auto focus, with 13pt manual focus
3 frame burst mode
and even does short 16fps w/audio mpegs.

There is unfortunately a delay between the time you pull the trigger and when the pic is taken.

Other than that it's really nice to be able to take the disc out and put it into any pc for downloading.
It also has a hot shoe for a more powerful flash than the onboard unit.

I'm not a pro by any means, but this is the best camera I've owned. It's nice to know instantly what the pic you just took
looks like.
This camera makes even my feeble pics look good.

I will chime in on this one...

I have been shooting for most of my life and have been an avid CANON fan until I picked up my first D50. I sold my entire CANON 10D/300D setup and purchased a Nikon D50. Hands down the best PROSUMER camera on the market.

I picked up the body for $549.00 and a 50mm fixed for $119.00.

This Camera truly inspires confidence and lets you shoot what you see in your minds eye with out fumbling for controls. YES, It is a true DSLR and it has almost all the functions of its big brothers and sisters (D70 and D200),but at a fraction of the cost and the out of camera color is amazing. I put it in my workflow on Adobe CS2 and I rarely ever touch the color adjustments.

Happy Shooting!

Camera tests:
http://www.dpreview.com/
There you can find links to other sites too.
I bought for my wife few months ago the new Panasonic FZ30 with its 12x Leica lens. IMO the best consumer camera with zoom lens on this moment. The pics right out of the box, on automatic, are amazing but the camera has all the bells and whistles, you can think off. Picture stabilization included. No trouble with accessory lenses (which are very expensive because they must have their own picture stabilization build in.)
Others may have another opinions, but there is a common opinion about the excellency of the mentioned site.

For my professional work, I use the Canon 1Ds Mk ll Seventeen megapixel DSLR.

For everything else I use this little Sony T7. It is less than a half inch thick, so it is very easy to carry, and it takes great videos.

Even the best camera left at home, doesn't take great photos. Here is an example of a recent shot taken with this little trooper:

Excellent point Jon : )

I've been keeping my eye on the new Canon high-end consumer offerings and right now the Powershot A620 is a *screaming* deal for about $200. I'm still holding out for the A720 (pivot screen I hope) or the G7 should it ever surface.

I use a Panasonic Lumix FZ30.

It's pretty good for not being an SLR. It shoots 3 frames per second, and it has image stabilization, a manual focus, and a manual 12x zoom. Here are some shots I've taken with it:

Yep, photography is just like motorcycling.
It's not necessarily the machinery, but the person using it.

I wish I had a better 'eye' for photography, but I'm working on it.

Film still. Heavy investment in Nikon glass (35mm) and Pentax (6x7cm) means I'm still waiting for a usable digi-cam body for my Nikon lenses.

I'm hoping to be able to adapt the Subal underwater housing to operate the basic controls on the Nikon when I eventually get it. I also have a few Nikonos amphibious cameras, and their 35mm lens and 80mm lens can operate dry or underwater. We were in New Guinea and trying to get close to the Tavuvur volcano in Rabaul harbor and under the ashfall, I was the only one who could still take pics because I could take my camera back to a bucket of water to rinse it off before opening. Everybody else had to put their cameras up under cover in the ash and rain - meaning I got the only pics.

I have been sorta lucky in being asked to shoot in some places not normally open. During a modern dance rehearsal at the Kennedy Center, I was allowed to take pics because I only used available light. The artificial light never gave the same effect that the choreographer and light designer wanted. Reviewing the shot doesn't help at all since the moment is gone the instant the trigger is pulled and the flash is very distracting to the rehearsing dancers.

Recommended entertainment: Be one of the few hetero males in a large group of dancers and be the only one with cameras.

Images are of Sarah Craft and Dana Tai Soon Burgess rehearsing (poor jpg quality, they print quite well):

I have a high-end film scanner for 35mm and medium format film. Full resolution scan (tiff) of a 6x7 cm color image only fits ONE image onto a CD. A full scan of a 35mm makes a 54-55 MB jpg. Good enough for what I wanna do!

Still wanting to find a Nikon body with less than 0.05 sec shutter lag. 0.1 is distracting but I don't want to pay $3K for a body.

Still waiting.

I've got a Canon 10D that I bought right before I went to Iraq in March of 03. I took about 10,000 pictures over my 15-month deployment, and the camera never had any issues. It was in 125+ degree heat, blowing sand, dust, and knocked around quite a bit. I love that camera, and still use it today. I think it will be a while before I choose to upgrade. My next purchase will be a Canon L lens, or a macro lens - I'd like to get into some macro photography. It's a whole different world.

Edit: Apparently my pictures didn't show. And I can't edit my personal website from here, (stupid admins!) so I deleted the links.

Craig I went out took some shots in the yard and wow what a camera. Its pretty good out of the box for sure. I can see though another lense in my future. I'd like have something that would do good like lets say Elkhart Lake at the races that could draw the rider in closer to you for a real nice shot but yet pretty universal.... is that possible??? With shade on it of coarse.

I'm using a Cannon EOS Rebel XT. I like the camera and it takes great photos. The biggest problem that I have at the moment is that every time I try to upload photos onto the badweb I get error messages! I resize and resize but no luck!

Clearly I'm not doing something right. I went to the page about photo uploading here but it's Greek to me.

You have to resize the picture down under 700x700 and also reduce the jpeg quality to get the file size down under 70k. It also helps to save the jpegs without exif info (particularly the thumbnail that's stored in the file).

Canon S1 IS, The IS stands for image stabilization, and with a 10 optical zoom its mandatory to be able to zoom in and get crisp shots without a tripod. I took a trip to Costa Rica and my wild life pics look awesome, everyone else there were dissapointed cause there shots were not as close or they turned out blurry I had to explain to them why mine were not.I cant say enough about this camera the next step up for me would be a digital SLR with very expensive I.S.zoom or IS tele lens.

Here's a decent priced everything lens.

If you read his recommendations and reviews he will tell you that an all-in-one lens is handy, but isn't going to be as sharp as a more specialized lens.
Mid priced at: $360
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-200mm-f-3.5-5.6-USM-Lens- Review.aspx

Here is a bit more specialized, yet inexpensive zoom lens. I actually have this lens, and it's ok, for the price. If you get around people with some nicer lenses you will want to trade it.
Only $190
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-75-300mm-f-4-5.6-III-USM-Len s-Review.aspx

This is nice because it has the IS and has a better build quality. I've used this, and its nice without being L glass. (L is Canon's top of the line stuff)
Definately more at $560
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-USM-Lens -Review.aspx

This is Canon's entry level L zoom lens. It is considered the best 'value' in the line-up. I want one. (or REALLY want the 2.8 IS version)
$585

He's awake.

Anyway, I had the zoom that is mentioned before, and a 28-105 for the close stuff that we had for our film camera. It took me about a month to want a different lens, but it took me about 3 before I decided and purchased.

Alot of it is being around other people with nice gear and learning what you can from them.
